Rimfire at 100 yards?

BUT the cost of ammo is significantly different between .22LR and .22 WMR.

For plinking, this is my main concern.

I recently had a chance to fire 100 rounds through a Marlin bolt gun in .17HMR, I I was impressed. It was quite accurate at 155 yards (laser verified), and not as loud as I thought it was going to be. (I still had my muffs on, but was expecting more)

My CZ-452 .22LR will do 0.5" at 50yds w/ a scope and rest, and CCI Velocitors. They're about $7-$8/50 and the fastest full-weight .22LR out there.

I shoot clay pigeons at 130 with my 39A. Pretty sweet rig. Using bulk federal ammo and iron sights, btw.

Even with my worse than legally blind status, when I shoot my Savage 1925 model 23a in .22lr and iron sights, I can hit the 1 foot high knock down ORANGE metal plates fairly well with CCI Stingers. That rilfe is an amazingly very accurate gun. I also have a Savage model 19 N.R.A. that is just as accurate although does have orig rear peep sights on it.

Clem,

How do you like that Richards Stock? I've been kicking tires for one for my .17HMR. How was the drop in? They claim 99%. How's it holding up? Please forgive me guys if I'm by chance kicking a dead horse here by asking about Richards Lammies but I just got turned on to them.

Btw, +1 on the .17HMR if your leaning towards the .22mag. You can get 20gr XTP, 17gr Vmax & now they have a 15.5gr NTX. $11-$12 a box of 50 through Natchez. I've used the XTP & Vmax on "Yotes" out to 175yrds DRT!!! It's like having a lasergun! Mine is the Savage 93R17 heavy barrel. Ugly as sin but great shooter. Picked it up at Cabelas with their Pine Ridge 3x9x40 for $200. The scope even has windage & elevation turrents clicked for the .17HMR. IMO it's a great out of the box package for the price. It's not a pretty CZ, but if accuracy with low cost is what your looking for you can't beat it.

GambJoe,

The scope is set for 100 yds, naturally the wind isn't any 10 mph or faster, waste of ammo. However, his rifle is definitely the shooter, we've even shot golf balls off the target frame that far, try that! :D

i like 22lr personally, i have my cheap bulk shells for when i jsut want to shoot and have fun, but i also have match/target ammo for when i really want to be accurate.

i can pay 22 mag ammo prices for the good 22lr shells but still shoot the 3 cent shell in the same rifle when i want.

I thinking of getting a CZ 455 or a Salvage Mark II series with a descent scope.

Either should work just fine in the medium price range. I like the Mueller APV 4.5-14x AO scope for longer range "plinking" with a 22LR (about $125). I would suggest you give Wolf Match Target a try as it shoots good in most rifles.

There's other sites that show targets that have been shot with iron sights at 100yds w/22LR, it's amazing what they can do. Some people shoot 200yds with a 22LR. Some of the shooting a 50yds w/irons is as good or better than the Scoped Rifles. Lot's of them use Sub sonic ammo, it's more accurate. I wanted a 22 Rifle for that kind of shooting so I ordered a CZ452 Ultra Lux, I received it Tuesday, It has a 28 1/2" barrel. Due to the weather I haven't shot it yet. I have adjusted the Trigger and a few other things.
I put up a 27' Flag Pole and within a week a Hawk was perched on top of it. It was a pretty site. All around me are Farmers I dought he lived a week.

My CZ 452 22lr does very well at 100 yds in calm conditions. Also used to own a 452 Lux in 22 mag some years ago. The two rifles were fairly close in acccuracy in the limited times I tested at 100 yards.

My Marlin 17 HMR shows very good 100 yard accuracy but I rarely shoot it because of price of ammo.

I much prefer 22 mag at 100 yards, it has more energy at 100 yards then the 22 LR has at the muzzle. Flatter shooting too, its about 900 fps faster.

I reckon it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're just paper punching or plinking, the .17HMR will typically cut very tiny groups at 100yds but ammo is not inexpensive and that gets boring after a while. Building a good .22LR that will do MOA or better is a little more of a challenge. My latest 10/22 (actually Nodak NDS-22) with Clark midweight barrel and KID trigger will do ¾"@100yds with Wolf MT. Which was/is more fun than just going out and shooting half inch groups with the .17.

Slap a 20MOA base on your trusty .22 and get after the 200yd golf balls.

Faster than Aguila Super Max at around 1700 FPS?

He said "fastest full-weight .22LR[/u]. The Aguila is 30gr @ 1750fps (per manufacturer), while the Velocitors are 40gr @ 1435fps. CCI Stinger is also faster than the Velocitor, but is only 32gr.

Rimfire at 100 yards?
for puching paper with an accutate rife at 100 yards will good quality .22 LR group well or would the .22 mag be better? I thinking of getting a CZ 455 or a Salvage Mark II series with a descent scope.

I shot my son's CZ bolt action with Win SuperX at 100yds recently and got groups like I get with my Savage in .22 mag. Of course the LR drops more at 100yds than the WMR and may be a little more sensitive to the cross-wind, but for punching paper at 100 yds an accurate rifle with good quality .22 LR ammo will match .22 WMR accuracy with ease and the ammo tends to cost less.

Not @100yds. The CZ with a 4X-Leupold @ 50yds (holding center on a 2” square) trying to establish an ammunition preference. The really expensive ammunition was excellent as always but the Federal auto match wasn’t bad either. I have to do some tweaking on the CZ in regards to bedding and trigger system. Optics maybe more-X required.

just grab a 17hmr rifle.. Cost slightly more to shoot, but who cares.. It ain't gonna make you broke. At least i hope not.. $12/box of 50 isn't bad. Who really shoots like 500 rounds a day anyway. i get bored after like a few boxes since the rifle is so accurate..

I own 2 savage 17hmr's and can easily do dime size groups at 100 yards if i do my part... nothing like a straight flat shot to 100 yards..

I do. If I shot my .17HMR as much as I do my .22LR's, I'd be a pauper. At a minimum of 20,000rds a year, you're talking about $685 vs. $5200.

the thing about 22's is you can get .5 inches at 50 yards... but it turns into 2 inches at 100. It opens up disproportionately compared to other calibers.

Some people will say because of the whole transonic barrier thing, I don't really buy into it, but with subsonic match ammo, the trend I described above still holds true in my experience.

But it makes it more of a challenge and more fun. I love to shoot 22lr's at 100

I'm retired and thought it would be something to do when I'm not shooting Turtles in the Pond with the pellet Rifle. If your tired of shooting at 100yds try 200. That's what some are doing. I have 180yd range here and today I took measurements and will have 200+ next week. Haven't shot my Gun yet. I want to test with Factory sights first.
