Looking for the best rimfire caliber for coyote. I am limited to using rimfire calibers only. I have a 22 magnum and was wondering if there was a rim fire caliber with a little more power.

.22 mag would be my choice. 17hmr is flat and fast. but i would feel better using the mag

Heaviest 22mag you can find, as close as you can get. Virtually any torso hit will prove eventually fatal. Nothing short of a brainstem shot is likely to drop them DRT. (Dead eventually is good enough to protect your chickens; DRT if you intend to collect pelts/ ears)

Either magnum rimfire will kill a coyote with a ribcage, brain, or spine hit. How long it takes to die may result in failure to recover the carcass if that makes a difference to you.
Thirty years ago 22 mag ammo was not as effective as it is today. Most of the coyotes I shot with the 22WMR had to be run down with hounds and finished off. Keep shots under 150 yards and don't shoot em in the butt.

My friend hunts coyotes with a 223 and his father in law uses a 17 HMR. He said he has been impressed with the 17 HMR and says it drops them pretty good. Most of his shots are under 100 yards I believe and the 17 uses the ballistic tip ammo. They arent always quick clean kills but I dont believe they have had any run off with a good shot from the 17.

I've had good luck on 'yotes with a .22 Mag using varmint loads. In the past, I had both a .223 and .22 wmr and I did about even on them. Only thing is, 100 yards is about max for the .22 wmr. Two hundred or more with the .223. (At least for me.)

Win. 40gr JHP .22 mag behind the shoulder. I have taken many this way. They don't go real far.

Are you recovering these for pelts? Are they a nuisance animal in your area?

Here, they are. I don't fur hunt, and ours are mangy disease spreading nasties. So, in protecting the farm critters from them, and thinning as many out as possible (we have many red tails, martins, fox, and bob cat to thin the local vermin) I just shoot them. Where I hit them isn't important, normally head/chest, but I personally do not sweat the placement. Let God sort them out.

You'll have to excuse my disdain for coy dogs. They're thick here, and cause problems quite frequently.

The 17 HMR is a wicked cartridge. If the range is kept a little short it can and will do the job. It makes a little hole going in and then explodes. Almost never exits.:)

My first instinct is to go for the 45gr or 50gr .22 magnum loads for coyote, bigger animal = heavier bullet, but people with more experience say I haven't seen what .17 HMR does in the field on coyotes.

I think distance is the important factor here. If most of your shots are around or under 100 yards, I'd go 22wmr. Longer? Go 17hmr.

Remington 5mm Magnum

Looks like a neat cartridge. To bad it fell by the wayside. With good marketing and new polymer tips it could be revived. With several hunting areas restricted to rimfire only it would be great for bobcats and coyotes. Any chance of it making a comeback?

Taurus makes a tracker... supposedly, I have yet to see one in stock anywhere. Alas, I would love to have a 5mm, but I am not holding my breath.

The .22wmr will get you about 1900 f/s and 325 ft/lbs of energy. The .17hmr about 2500 f/s and 250 ft/lbs of energy. If the .22wmr is enough penetration for coyote, then I'd probably give the edge to it. If it isn't enough (at reasonable distances), then I'd give the edge to the .17hmr.

Honestly, both probably perform close to identically in the real world. The .22wmr is cheaper, but not by that much.

As Furncliff''s picture, V-Max .22 Mag is the way to go.

A hit in the boiler room (ribcage) will give a very distinct "POP" or "THWACK" and is truly detrimental to a yote's health.

I sold my .223 and have went solely with my Marlin Model 25 MN in .22 wmr.
Now, the only rifles I have is the Marlin Model 25 MN and Model 60 .22 lr.

Try the V-Max and maybe re-evaluate using your .22 Mag wmr. I did.

Are you legally limited to a rimfire? Is a shotgun an option? At distances where I'd be confident that the rimfires would work, a 12ga with 3" mags and Hevi-shot T-shot is probably going to be more effective. That stuff is gtg out to 70+ yds. I'd personally rather have a centerfire of most any flavor than any of the above though.
