I have two old .22 rifles that I acquired from neighbors as a kid in the '60's. I would like some info on identifying any manufacturing info and possibly exploded drawings on these. Also how to determine when they were manufactured. Both are bolt action.

All I have to go on is what is stamped on the barrels. Here is the data:

.22 single shot
Stamped on barrel:

Springfield Arms Company
Chicopee Falls, Mass USA

.22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle
Also: 14 in a circle

No other markings or serial number

.22 5-shot magazine
Stamped on Barrel:

Springfield Model 84C-
J. Stevens Arms Company
Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A.
.22 short long or long rifle

Also has 'X' inside circle on barrel behind rear sight slot next to connection with Chamber.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

You probably won't be able to date either of them. Stevens was one of the last to adopt serial numbers, as they didn't become required by law until 1968.

For drawings, go to the Numrich arms site. They should have exploded drawings that you can download for a small fee.

Been there - done that! I was hoping for a little more input... I guess it will have to remain a mystery - unless someone else can help. :)

Go to the forum RIMFIRE CENTRAL

and post your inquiry on the Savage subforum. Also, there is a reference book on the Savage-Stevens products that might help some.
