Hi guys. I just resized some lake city brass yesterday in .223 remington. It is 2x fired. Looking at the bases, there is a ring near the case head. Now, I dont know if this is simply where the die stopped resizing, or if this is a sign of a soon to be seperated case head. What do you think? The fact that these are only 2x fired, leads me to believe that it is where the die stopped sizing, but I want to be sure before I load these up. Anybody have any pictures that would help me out? Thanks for your input.

Straighten a paperclip out and then bend a small right-angle hook on the end. Use this to feel the inside of the case where the ring is. If the case is stretching too much there will be a noticeable depression on the inside. I had this happen with some 8mm brass. I felt the ring on the inside, so I split the case with a Dremel tool and keep it on my loading bench as a reminder.

Ditto what oldfart said.

When in doubt, throw it out. I pitch lots of brass, some undoubtably good. But why have a nice expensive rifle and feed it questionable brass? Doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the replys. I tried what oldfart suggested with the paperclip, and I felt nothing. The outside of the case also feels smooth. So, I will continue to load this brass. I also threw the brass in the tumbler for 2 hours, and the rings are much less noticeable. Also, the rings were fairly far down on the case.....I read that the ring will usually form at the junction between the case walls and the webbing of the case head, which would be a little farther up from where mine were showing. Thanks for the help. I feel much better about loading this brass up.

Do as suggested, checking for possible case head seperation.......but,

the ring can be left by the re-sizing die. I've had similar rings on brass that I use and even cut them in half to find the cause. Watch when you re-size and you will often find the marks coincide with the bottom of the die.

Yeah, check your sizing die. My RCBS full sizer did that everytime on hornet brass for me. I thought it was weak brass, but it was just the die.
