Just curious as to what type of bases and rings are most commonly used on bolt action rifles. Anyone ever use the dual dovetail style bases/rings? How about Signature rings? I have a new 700P in .308 and have not completely decided what to use for scope mounting. A Leupold 6.5X-20X is the scope I am going to use.

for hunting rifles, i really like talley lightweights. the ring is integral to the base.

dual dovetails are a strong, bulletproof system. among the best for heavy kickers that will likely see some abuse.

also have some standard leupold bases (windage adjust). the 338 win mag is the cut-off here, and even then, it might be too much gun for these bases. i really like being able to get my windage perfectly centered without touching the windage knob... this is how you get the same l-r point of impact at all yardages, instead of compromising. but, by design, they won't stand up to the hardest kickers.

warne makes a ring that is hell for stout, and is my ring of choice on varminters... but they are very heavy. these are a weaver-style.

weavers work well for common deer calibers. but, i tend to stay away from them because i feel there are better mousetraps.

burris signature rings... i hate these rings. they are unattractive, very hard to get the gaps between the ring halves centered, and tend to slip. i still have 'em, but they have been banished from my gun room and spend their time languishing in their box in the garage, where they will never see the light of day on one of my guns again.

that covers all the mounting systems on my rifles... there are variations on a theme, but these are what i know.

I highly recommend a newer company out there called Tactical Precision Systems. VERY nice stuff at a great price. I'm using their TSR rings currently on my 700P with a Badger 20 MOA base. Very well made, well designed cap system, great customer service. No lapping was needed either, they fit the tube perfectly. I used to have the Leupold QRW's and they worked just fine......I simply wanted something a bit beefier.

I've used Burris Signature rings on my 7 STW and they are plenty strong. This is a gun that ate 3 sets of Leopold STD rings (which are are weak design IMHO).

On a .308 you'll never have an issue.

Thanks for the replies - many types used by the shooters here! Interesting viewpoints as well.
