Riot

When ever possible, avoidance is the best policy.

Nothing I can do in a riot except to stay out of the way, and protect my own property.

And if several hundred folks are coming at me on my property, the best I can do is to scare them. I sure can't stop them. Best answer is bug out. Runaway. Only in the movies does one guy stop that sort of crowd in any other manner. If there are several guys with me then we MIGHT have a chance, but that's about it.

Go figure.

Fred

stay away... but be prepared. probably sit on my couch with the shotty pointed right at the door. if it gets too close for comfort, then i take preventative measures.

Unless you live in a ghetto or very close to a major metropolitan downtown area, riots aren't a big problem. Don't go downtown to a major city when you know there will be a protest generating event (major (racial) court decision, event like a WTO meeting or Republican presidential visit).

If you do find yourself in one, about face ASAP or move perpendicular to it getting a few blocks offline of the main area, then travel opposite. Don't draw attention to yourself, if cornered and assaulted, fight for your life. Move in one direction injuring and slamming the one in front of you back into the ones behind him creating space to keep up your forward momentum.

Since I'm about a mile from downtown, and 1/16 mile from a main road, I'll break out the shotgun and prop the apt door closed with the long couch. Handguns will get worn around the apartment probably.

you would join a riot if obama lost the election? uh oh...

it really would depend on what its being rioted, and who is doing the rioting and if its all theft, and stealing, or just damaging govt property, or something of that nature. the latter... well, i could probably look the other way. then again, id end up footing the bill in the long run. i live 1 mile from a downtown city. 3 million+ people in it.

I lived through the last Los Angeles riots after Rodney King.

I'd call up and invite some Korean friends over...:D

If it starts in town, and seems to be drifting my way, we'll leave. My sons both live close, and the oldest has two children. We'll all pack as much as possable and head for the lake house. The trucks and cars will carry enough essentials for a while. The boss will have to understand...or I'll have to retire. :what:

Some stuff is unreplaceable. Just pick the right stuff to pack.

If it starts right on us and there is no getting out...well, that would change things. I guess the hardest thing would be having enough water and food for the duration.

Mark.

I've heard a few people here say that the rioters in L.A. stayed away from the residential areas because they knew that homeowners have guns. Given that I would want to fort up at home. If caught up in it or out in the streets, my number one priority would be to get off the streets. If I had to check into a motel or go to a hospital, or even (God fobid) go to the police I'd do what ever it took to get off the streets.

LA rioters were already downtown and living in the urban areas. No need to travel miles to the suburbs when you could loot the liquorstore on the corner, the FootLocker up the street, the Korean grocer down the street.

Question: What is a rioter more afraid of than a BIG dog?

Answer: 2 BIG DOGs.

Works quite well. :D

Lessee, I've got two BIG dogs but they're unlikely to terrify anybody (Newfoundlands).

I was at IOBC (Infantry Officer Basic Course) in Fort Benning GA for the last REALLY big Miami riot in 1980. That event spread so fast because a white cop killed a black guy and the whole town was just ripe for the violence. Also it was a very HOT summer which always adds to the tension. Before you knew it (from eyewitnesses) in totally different parts of the COUNTY folks were being beset by small mobs and dragged from vehicles. One guy was near my late mom's home when a mob of thugs pulled a father and son from a car. This little kid watched as his daddy had his ears and nose sliced off his face. This was a full seven years before the now famous "Shall Issue" carry laws went into effect in the state of Florida.

Sometimes the "stay away" advice, while wise, while wise isn't too effective. Sometimes the violence and the hate just intrudes into life. For those times, especially if you're not armed for any reason, just remember you're sitting in a multi ton weapon. Use the vehicle. Don't leave the vehicle for any reason. This is one place where a heavy 4x4 SUV or Pickup really shines except the pickup without a camper shell is actually an invitation to pick up unwanted remora in a riot. Good way to get killed. These days with gas prices the way they are and getting worse, more folks are going to those TINY "Smart Cars." Dang there is even a dealership for those that sprang up near me. On the same lot as the Mercedes dealership, no less.

If you're in one of those little bitty cars and a riot event begins, you're toast. Buncha' thugs will just lift you and the vehicle into the air and toss you into a canal, or whatever. The lesson there is, ride smart but CARRY B-I-G!

Riots can spread like wild fire, seldom giving warning or time to move out of their way. The best suggestion I can think of is to stay put at home, doors locked and shotgun(s) ready. Close the windows and blinds as they will block rocks tossed by the rioters. It may also help to partner with a couple of neighbors to present a bigger front. A mob may attack a single man, but it'll think twice about attacking 3 or more armed men.

My girlfriend and I have been discussing this quite seriously due to the possibility of unrest if Obama loses in November. We live in a working class neighborhood in Baltimore that backs up to and is flanked by some rougher areas.

We have a pretty straight shot out of town that only requires us to be in a potential hotzone for a couple of blocks. If we're home and sufficiently aware when things start we're going to beat a hasty retreat out of town before the inevitable improvised barriers of dumpsters, couches, and other heavy things are erected. All of our vehicles are getting gassed-up the morning of election day.

If fleeing is not an option we'll hunker down. A riot is not the zombie apocalypse so it's unlikely that power will go out or that we'll lose water service. And even in the event of either of the above happening, our modest supply of bottled water and preserved food should be sufficient for the few days (max) it will require to pacify the area.

Our basement door opens out into the back alley, but it's positioned in a fashion that makes it easy to barricade. We're going to barricade it a few days before election night just in case. Our front door is not easily barricaded, but our house has a few defensible chokepoints once intruders are inside and we'll have those covered. The really frightening prospect is fire. We're going to have extinguishers at the ready and sleep with our shoes on if things look grim.

Our main worry is for the safety of the other people on our block. I am the only able-bodied male under 60 on the block. Of the five other men on the block, one is over 65 and not a gun owner (English non-citizen), one is a one-legged gun owner, two are deaf, and one is blind. The women are a mixed bag, but most are old and infirm and one of the younger gals is blind (wife of the blind man). Not exactly the makings of an improvised militia.

I will come to this forum immediately, report the situation, and get expert advice from someone with either an armored shopping cart or a Playstation II.
