while I was gone this winter I bought a roa brass grip frame on GB and had it sent home.Now I'm home and the brass grip frame is not the same size as the normal roa.Now that I guess I'm stuck with it I want to at least get rid of the rubber grips and put wood back on.The grip frame is close to 1/2" longer than the roa.Is this a super blackhawk grip frame?

Wap41,does everything else fit right? The super black hawk is about 1/2 longer but i never heard of ruger making a brass one. May be a after market one.There are after market grip frames made for them. I used to do a lot of custom work on rugers and used the after market ones.Lot of steel frames to replace the aluminum ones on black hawks, round trigger guards on super's, and cut a lot and reshaped to birdsheads.My favorite was putting bisley grip frames on a black hawk along with the bisley hammer.I have a set of composite ivory grips that fit the reg black hawk or ROA that you can have if you want them. They are plain but i do have a pair of ruger medalions that i can put in them too.They have just been in a box of stuff i have under the bed for years now gathering dust.I just looked and i have one side of ivory super black hawk grips, dont know where the other one is, and i have a set of ivory super black hawk grips that have been altered to a very mild birdshead shape, actually just the back bottom corners rounded a little bit.I also have a back site for a ruger single action gather dust in the box.
I'm sure it's an aftermarket with a square trigger guard,I'm just not sure if it's a super blackhawk.Every thing seem to fit fine just a longer grip.I have my eye on a set of handcarved grips for a square trigger guard but I'd like to make sure thats what these are

Your 'brasser' is NOT aftermarket.
These were somewhat a limited run by Ruger. 1974 I think.

I like the look also but it is a bit smaller than the standard ROA trigger gaurd.
Actualy, too small for my big hand.
Did ya notice some knucklehead filed the ramp out o' the front sight ?

Jim,great to hear that,I knew the year was about right and it had the right box and paper work when I bought it so I assumed it was right but had no knowledge they made them with different size grip frames.It does have casting marks so I can probably get verification from ruger.I cured my addiction to them this winter,I got about 20 or more now and with the prices where they are now I think I'm done buying.

I have a couple Smith and Wessons with front sights that look just like that. IMO they give a really good sight picture, and the only reason for a full ramp is to allow for a smoother draw. Again IMO, the ramp style sight is an answer looking for a question.
I did not realize you meant you got a whole ROA, i thought you ment just a grip frame. That is cool and even more so being it is a rare factory gun.Very nice! To me the longer grip on the super black hawk and the bisley style fit my hand better than the short ones.There are aftermarket grip that are not beveled or just slightly beveled on the bottom that make the shorter frames feel better too to some people.A lot of folks dont like the square back trigger guards because it smashes their fingers when shooting it but i never had a problem with them.Actually when i shoot i use both hands and the bottom of the trigger guard rests on my index finger with the square back and feels more natural to me, especially on a walker.
I called ruger and it is a factory grip frame,the early ones were longer like Jim said and they take grip pannels that are only for them,they refered me to numrich and they had one in stock so I'm real happy now that I know I got what I thought I bought.It's a 1973 with original box,all paper work including a warranty card,which I've never seen before and nipple wrench.

Because it killed the original condition of a once uncommon ROA.
Even if i sent the gun in for a sight replacement and bluing. It would still no longer be original.
I don't mind altering a firearm for personal use IF it doesn't take away from it's originality. For instance. I immediately replaced the sights on my Red Hawk and GP-100 but those are interchangable parts that don't permanently alter the guns.
