Road Hunting/Shooting from vehicles

"Shooting from vehicles is not hunting"

So... by your logic, when it's raining and cold and I decided to go sit in my truck, in my hayfield, and shoot a deer on my own land, that isn't hunting? Gimme a break. "Hunting" is a hobby, a sport, a past-time; not an endurance test. I too have enjoyed hunting for many years, and will continue to do so. I hunt for meat, not for trophies; if that means I have to shoot a deer while sitting in my pickup, then I will. However, I will not break the law to do it. Simply not worth it. Most people would agree with me; some, like you, do not. That is certainly your choice, but it doesn't mean either of us is wrong. I've also been known to ground-swat ducks while jump-shooting ponds. Does that make me any "less" of a hunter? I should think not.

Arkansas regs: It is illegal to point, aim, hunt, or shoot a firearm or archery equipment across, from, or within 100 feet of the centerline of any city, county, state or federally maintained road. Doesn't say anything about a private road.

Absolutely.
Captcurt already knows this, but for those who don't, a lot of Arkansas hunt on land leased from timber companies. That means lots of logging roads, some very well kept, are built all through the woods.
My father is in his 70s, and not in good health. This gives him the opportunity to still get out in the woods, have a chance for a shot at a deer, without my brother and I worrying he's going to break his neck trying to get in or out of a deer stand.

It's not my preferred way of hunting, but I'm certainly not above it in poor weather conditions or for those who simply can't safely navigate deer stands anymore.

A couple of the farms that I hunt are working cattle farms. Tractors and ATV's are used daily and almost constantly. The animals there pay little attention to vehicles. The farm that I cull on had deer tame enough to watch you drive by no more than 20 yards from them. They don't do that now. Now when you see one while driving they are getting out of Dodge. I have actually had to hoof it the last 3 years.

Shooting from a vehicle or road is strictly prohibited here. Unless you are a Native on a reservation. If you are disabled and cannot walk you may shoot from a parked vehicle on private property if you get a Doctors letter and a permit. So is baiting and shooting after hours. And game wardens do go to a lot of trouble to catch or trap violators. A friend of mine got caught shooting at a deer decoy at night. With a good lawyer he got off since it wasn't a real deer. So they changed the law. Now you can't shoot a decoy either lol.
In some areas shining deer is a tradition. And those folks usually get free food anyway. But most folks take pride in being good sportsmen and obey all the rules.

One of my friends gave the local game warden permission to put a decoy on his land. The second day of season he and daughter started to town when Amy saw a big deer about 60 yards off the road. Jumping out of the truck and laying his old 30-30 across the hood Deano squeezed one off. It didn't move. Looking around for the game warden he was surprised when the deer turned and headed towards the cedars. He told me later, "I was so rattled by then that I missed him two more times."

The way I look at it, I'm not hunting to impress anyone. I'm not trying to be "sporting".

I'm trying to put meat in my freezer. Period.

As far as that goes, my ethical standard is to follow the laws and minimize the suffering of an animal I shoot. Anything beyond that is YOUR standards, not mine, and frankly, I don't give a darn about YOUR standards, unless you are going to donate 100+ lbs of meat to my freezer at the end of the season if I don't have the opportunity to shoot an animal while hunting to YOUR standards.

I've shot does with a doe tag. I've shot spikes when the opportunity presents itself because meat in the freezer beats none any day. I've shot dumb deer that were too rutted up and horny to run, and i've shot deer that didn't know I was there.

I'll happily utilize any legal method that increases my odds of putting meat in the freezer, and if that means offending your tender sensibilities by covering the maximum amount of ground I can from a vehicle in pursuit of a harvest opportunity, thats what I'm going to do.
