I will be there Saturday(if they're open) and express our support for them and to buy some ammo I need.

To Count: Yes, if the doctor had him admitted to the hospital for mental problems OR the girls pressed charges, he would NOT been able to legally purchase the firearms.

When the dealer calls in the background check, the person at the other end of the phone tells the dealer "Yes" or "No" on whether to do the sale, based on known background and current laws.

The dealer does NOT get a rundown of the person's background, so that the dealer can decide for themselves to make the sale of not. The dealer is simply told in no uncertain terms if they can do the sale or not.

I'll stand behind 'em, too. He did nothing wrong in selling the gun. There is only one person to blame for all those people dying.

Like the others, I thought he conducted himself remarkably well in all the interviews I've seen with him. He also never seemed to have a fair shot at defending himself. The media was already against him before he said anything.

It's sad people would send hateful emails to him. I wonder if Glock and Walther are getting any. Some people have too much time on their hands.

Roanoke Firearms is not responsable for the background check. They only call in the information, and the decision to proceed is made by the FBI and Virginia State Police.
Assuming Roanoke Firearms really did call in the information correctly, and assuming the shooter gave the correct information. I'm not saying they did or didn't, and although I give the gun store the benifit of the doubt and am assuming they did everything right, at this point I don't know what they did. And you don't either (unless you are Roanoke Firearms or someone checking the records.)

Anyway this is what CNN is reporting about complaints from other students (they did not press legal charges) and about the shooter being "declared mentally ill" and about "A temporary detention order" to have him taken to a mental health facility for a day or two in 2005. I would think this last should have shown up on the National Instant Check System (NICS) and should have prevented the sale.

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/US/04/18/vtech.shooting/index.html

Excerpt from the above link:
...CNN also learned Wednesday that in 2005 Cho was declared mentally ill by a Virginia special justice, who declared he was "an imminent danger" to himself, a court document states.

A temporary detention order from General District Court in the commonwealth of Virginia said Cho "presents an imminent danger to himself as a result of mental illness."

A box indicating that the subject "Presents an imminent danger to others as a result of mental illness" was not checked.

In another part of the form, Cho was described as "mentally ill and in need of hospitalization, and presents an imminent danger to self or others as a result of mental illness, or is so seriously mentally ill as to be substantially unable to care for self, and is incapable of volunteering or unwilling to volunteer for treatment."

A handwritten section of the form describes Cho. "Affect is flat and mood is depressed," said the order, which was signed December 14 by Special Justice Paul M. Barnett. "He denies suicidal ideation. He does not acknowledge symptoms of a thought disorder. His insight and judgment are normal."

Student complaints
Police first investigated Cho in November 2005 after a student complained about him calling her and contacting her in person, university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said...

Cho was sent to the university's Office of Judicial Affairs, which handled the complaint, the outcome of which is confidential, university officials said.

"The student declined to press charges and referred to Cho's contact with her as annoying," Flinchum said of the November investigation.

Police investigated him again the next month when a female student complained about instant messages Cho sent her, Flinchum said.

"Again, no threat was made against that student. However, she made a complaint to the Virginia Tech Police Department and asked that Cho have no further contact with her," the chief said.

After police spoke to Cho, they received a call from a student concerned that he might be suicidal.

Officers spoke to Cho "at length" then asked him to see a counselor. He agreed to be evaluated by Access Services, an independent mental health facility in Blacksburg, the chief said.

"A temporary detention order was obtained and Cho was taken to a mental health facility" on December 13, 2005, he said.

A student asking to be identified only as Andy said he was the one who told police that Cho was suicidal. Police "took [Cho] away to the counseling center for a night or two," said the student, who used to room with Cho...

Authorities said they received no more complaints about Cho before the shootings, Flinchum said.

I'm going to try and drive down to Roanoke this weekend from NoVa. I plan on showing my support to RF by purchasing something from him.

Is Roanoke Firearms the little store that's in the same building as a pawn shop? If so, I think I've been in there once or twice. Or am I thinking of a different store?

Good message on the website; thanks for posting it as the website is now temporarily down.

He did a very creditable job in the interviews, also. I've been in there, though bought little due to being out-of-state (and broke); good shop with good folks.

Actually, the government and HIPPA (Health Information Privacy, etc.) share part of the blame. The government is protecting us to death.

Please pass on my support to Roanoke Firearms.

Thanks,
Bob

shoot, I was gonna place an order for some .45 acp! I support anyone who has gone through this kinda bull.

I was also gonna leave them a message about getting back to work because the rest of us want to defend ourselves, just like always.

He wrote a verygood message. I am sorry he has recieved so much hate email. Roanoke Firearms seems like a very responsible gun store and if I lived in Virginia I would be supporting their business. At a time like this they really need our support also, for I am sure they are distraught over this too.:(

I will be there Saturday(if they're open) and express our support for them and to buy some ammo I need.

Can you inquire as to whether they will ship out of state? I'd be happy to help support them by purchasing some ammo or something.

Thanks!
Greg

I just called them up on the phone and the guy couldn't be nicer. He actually said that he's a registered member on THR and when asking if they ship ammo out of state, he even talked me out of it citing the fact that it wouldn't be worth it due to the freight! He thanked me for his support and cited the reason for taking the site down was that they received over 200 death threats. Hopefully when they get back up they'll have a way to buy over the site because they're definitely getting some support from me.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about the "temporary detention order" issued for Cho Seung-hui. This is not the same as being adjudicated mentally ill. The TDO is what authorizes the police to detain you pending a mental health evaluation. Apparently Cho was assessed and released, not sent to a commitment hearing and was not adjudicated mentally ill. The burden of proof for issuing a TDO is much lower than having the court declare someone mentally ill and have them involuntarily committed. A TDO can in some cases be issued by a magistrate who has never even interviewed the subject.

Since he was never adjudicated mentally ill (a formal commitment hearing is required for that) he shouldn't have been prohibited from purchasing a firearm under federal law. The background check worked the way it should have.

Whether or not the psychiatrist should have found him crazy as a bedbug is a different discussion.

I feel bad for the gunshop owner, he already feels horrible about the whole incident only to have the media and the people calling him to make him feel worse. Good message he posted though.

Someone needs to get in contact with that guy and tell him to put his website back up...I want to order from him just out of principle. It's absolutely :cuss: that people would be opportunistic and rail against this business that did nothing wrong. :cuss: ridiculous!! Ticks me the :cuss: off!!

I think the message on the site shows he's a standup guy running a business responsibly. :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

I called him on the phone and he said the site'll be down till this blows over. That and he said their redesigning it as well so not really sure how long it'll take to be back up.

Hang on. The guy who shot the students got his guns by passing a background check, and wasn't considered ineligible so...a bunch of "moral" crusaders are sending threats to the FFL who sold the guns?

That's just stupid.

I'd like to add my support for Roanoke Firearms.

Somebody call the owner and have him post some prices/contact info here so we can show support with our wallets.

David

I had worked (+ 10 years) with the owner of Roanoke Firearms before he opened the business and he was a stand up guy then as he is now.

Went by the shop yesterday and the judging by the number of sales I saw, (including me), support was outstanding.

I overheard him on the phone to some media bunch trying to get an interview, and answer was yes but no inside taping and no contact with customers.

Down side was that I may be on TV as taping was going on as I entered the shop with a rifle to trade.

I'm sure that path to the "The Highroad" will be maintained by him.

Just received this via VCDL:

Good morning, Mr. Van Cleave,

As a subscriber to your newsletter, I received the supportive email
alert you sent out this morning. Thank you so very much for your
kind words.

As you can imagine, we have been positively inundated by media from,
literally, all over the world. At one time Tuesday, John was in the
parking lot interviewing on camera with film crews from Russia, The
Netherlands, Japan, and various and sundry folks from around the US
and Canada. We couldn't even get to him to hand him a cold drink.
Even though John has a really bad back, he soldiered on for nine
non-stop hours just that day doing the same thing. Wednesday and
Thursday were more of the
same.

While he was outside, we were inside trying to conduct business. Our
phone has been ringing non-stop, and I'm not misusing that word -- as
soon as we hang up from one call, there's another waiting. I've
spoken to media from every major US network, every major newspaper in
North America, and radio stations from the US, Canada, Europe, and
places I'd never even heard of. As a side note, watch closely what
you say to the reporters from the UK. The London Independent
absolutely roasted us by twisting John's words inexcusably.

I finally suspended our website at www.roanokefirearms.com and put up
a note to all the haters who've left us everything from threats to
simple "shame on you" emails. I also left a thank you note to the
smaller, but highly appreciated percentage who left notes of support.

As you noted in your alert, this Cho clown was indistinguishable from
any of the many other college-age kids who come into our shop. He
was cordial, and acted absolutely normal. Had he acted in any other
way, we would not have made the sale. All of us at Roanoke Firearms
are devastated by the carnage at Virginia Tech. We can only imagine
the pain and suffering being experienced by the families and friends
of the victims, and by the surviving victims.

Thank you very much for your support. We appreciate you very much,
as always. If your customers get a busy signal when they call, and
encounter a full voice mailbox, we apologize. The media frenzy,
while showing signs of letting up, continues...

Please keep us, and all in any way associated with this tragedy, in
your prayers.

Respectfully,
Dennis "DC" Chastain
Manager, Roanoke Firearms

The owner posts over at black-rifles.com

Shouldn't be hard to find him, as he's turned into quite the celebrity.

Good guy though, wonder if his shop carries anything I'd be interested in..
