Robber's Gun Breaks Into Pieces During Holdup

I live fairly close to the First Merit, however I'm not a customer. I've been in it a few times in the past, after it first opened and was armed each time, I didn't see any GB signs on the doors.
The robbery occurred at 3:20pm. The bank had a single male employee and the rest were female tellers. The robber weighed about 180lbs. When he jumped over the counter he made one female get up and told her to empty all the cash drawers into his bags. He got impatient with her and emptied the drawers himself. At he jumped back over the counter the gun fell and "shattered". He did not pick it up and put it back together. He ran Eastbound into a wooded area behind the parking lot. Police searching the wooded area found 2 $5.00 bills. The police chopper could not locate him even though the were there within a few minutes.

On listed date and time reporting business states that a m/b approximately 6'2" 180lbs wearing all black,a red mask and red work gloves came into listed business and demanded everyone to get down on the floor. Suspect jumped over the counter and held witness number one at gun point demanding that she open all the drawers behind the counter and to put as much money as she could in the bags. Suspect got into a hurry and ended up doing it himself and jumped back over the counter and told everyone in the bank to "have a good day." At that time he dropped what appeared to be a black semi-automatic hand gun on the floor as it broke into small peices. Suspect left the bank on foot and headed into the wooded area on the east side of the bank. Responding officers were able to obtain two five dollar bills in that area that the suspect m ayhave dropped as he ran. There were a total of five witnesses and no one was injured.

Is it just me or does it seem like more and more people just stand around and do nothing while bad things happen instead of helping? :banghead:

ar10, THANK YOU for some pertinent facts:

1. The robber was 6'-2" and 180 lbs.
2. The bank had a single male employee and the rest were female tellers
3. Upon entering with a gun, he demanded everyone get on the floor.
4. When his gun went to pieces, he left.

So....
Even if could see the broken gun (behind the counter ???) and react before he left, I'm not going to jump somebody bigger (and probably quite younger) than me.

Also, if I had a gun, unless the BG clearly shows that he intends to seriously harm someone, I'm happy to let him leave with the money rather than have a gun fight in bank with folks at risk. Banks likely feel the same way and may be motive for some of them posting "No CC" signs.

Your thoughts?

I'd die laughing rather than give him any money. Is it a good shoot when the bad guy's gun is on the floor in pieces?

I say he could have had a backup or a shank, fire away!

?????

most banks have employe policy dont fight back let him take the money the insurance will pay.
while I realize most of you have a poor opinion of inexpensive gun most do work.I have had many of them.they are not made to fire 1000s of rds they are made to function for long enuf to do the job.many of them do.jennings used to be a police backup gun.

3 kinds of people

Sheep=good people but need leadership

Dogs=good people, are leaders, protect sheep

wolves=bad people, prey on sheep

This bank had one wolf, a herd of sheep and not a single dog, sad.

How about this opinion...
I can't help but believe that any time something like this ends with no shots fire would be a good thing.

Nobody in the bank was carrying. What a perfect time to take action,

What does carrying have to do with anything here? You would be at fault if you pulled a gun in this case. No ones life was in danger or even threatened as the gun had fallen apart.:neener:

Unless the guy starts herding people to the back or I get the idea he doesn't want to leave I'm not going to shoot some idiot over the bank's money.

I figured there would be some kind of GPS tracer along with the die pack.

Dogs=good people, are leaders, protect sheep

Same quote somewhat more accurately rendered

Dogs = incredibly dumb & will lick the hand of a tyrant just as fast as that of a good man. Hitler's dogs loved him.

I'd much rather be a wolf than a dog.

I'll respectfully disagree. The news article states, "According to the FBI, the robber kept yelling at everyone to stay down as he picked the pieces off the ground and put the gun back together again."

If I'm there and armed, I'm darn sure NOT going to stay face down on the floor and wait for him to put the gun back together again!!! Are we supposed to assume the impact with the floor rendered the gun permanently inoperable? We aren't required to know if a BG's gun is functional or not, and I'm still wondering if one of the pieces was just the magazine falling out or getting separated when he dropped it. I'm not saying I'd shoot in this case either. Who knows without playing Monday morning QB, but I'm reasonably sure you could draw down on him to prevent reassembly without adverse legal ramifications. If not, I'd take my chances with a jury in that case.

I'd much rather be a wolf than a dog.

Treo: Wolf sounds more romantic in an exciting sort of way but by definition is the predator. Please tell me you aren't planning on joining the bank robber as a predator of the people, (sheep).

There are a couple of interesting things about this;
1. I saw several clips on the local news (I live in the area) of the FBI agent at the scene. He reported that the gun dropped, "came apart", and the guy put it back together. He then went on to explain that this could mean the magazine simply came out when the gun hit the floor and the robber reinserted it. He said no one was certain at that point what had happened. I think the police report only reported what witnesses said. Such witnesses are usually like three blind men describing an elephant from different ends of the pachyderm. Most non-gun folk might see a mag come out and think "the gun shattered into pieces". The newspaper and news channels had a field day.
2. The Columbus PD believes the same guy robbed another bank the next day. The video of that robbery shows a he has large satin finish silver semi-automatic handgun. While on typical security camera footage, the gun does not look to be a Bryco/Jennings, Lorcin, Davis, Cobra, or Hi-Point. It is the size of a Bryco/Jennings M48 or M49, but not quite the right shape. Looked more along the S&W 59xx/69xx series to me.

Calling a few local bank patrons "sheep" simply because they decided to let an armed robber (no one knows if he only had one gun) leave with the bank's insured and dye-packed money, is unfair. I'm sure all the tactical ninjas would've instantly jumped on the guy.....NOT.

Well, if gas prices keep.......

Seriously, no I obviously have no intention of becoming a criminal.
But by the same token I did not get my CHP to be a "guardian of the people". I still have the letter that came W/ my CHP it says " This permit is extended to you in order that you may defend your self and your family." doesn't say anything about apprehending criminals.

The whole "sheep dog" mind set scares me it reminds me of groups like the "Guardian Angels" or more accurately a group here in Co Springs called "the Citizen's C.B. Patrol" . They drive around all night in their beater cars wearing black BDUs being the "eyes & ears" of the police.

Wolves are predators (necesarry predators BTW)

Dogs will lick any hand that feeds them, good or bad

I think I'll just be what I am a Free Man.
