from the ones that i have shot. they have been a great value, they are reliable with 230gr fmj for sure, and you migt get lucky and get one that feeds everythig perfect. they are also really suprisingly accurate too. and they are fun to shoot but they are 1911's.

my friends dad was a gunners mate in the navy and trained people on all kinds of 1911s. some were rock island manufactured. just as good as colts he said.

Sorry to say but the Rock Island Arms aka RIA are made by Armscor in the Philippines, I believe the Dan Wesson is also made by the same company. This would make them unavailable to the U.S. Military as pistols used by our military must be mfg. in the U.S.A. This is why Beretta built a plant here on our shores.

With all this being said RIA makes an excellent entry level 1911 .45.

i swear he said that they were rock island, just range training guns though. since when couldnt the military get foreighn products?

The guns that your friend's dad used were probably made at Rock Island Arsenal, a US Army arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. Rock Island Armory, the guys who import the Phillipines guns that are the subject of this thread, named themselves after this arsenal, just like Springfield Armory named itself after the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.

That said, the guns imported by Rock Island Armory have a very good reputation, both for their products and their customer service.

Dan Wesson guns are made in America, and are owned by the American arm of the CZ-UB corporation of the Czech Republic. They used to be owned by Bob Serva, who now runs a company called Fusion Arms.

A certain connection there-Rock Island in the PI= to Corregidor Island, of WW2 fame

This thread is really looking good, keep it up. I know there are some more good looking "Rocks" out there. Let's see them !

:DWell Guys, Just recieved her this morning. Here's the Pic. Gunbroker- $465.00. The VZ Alien grips are coming, 3-4 days. Tonight is range night. Can't wait.

PS. the target is from my .22 Officers Match. (25 yards) One handed, sloppy, I know.

I went looking for an absolutely plain 1911 in August. All I wanted was a lowered and flared ejection port and beveled mag well- which had me lusting after a SA Mil-Spec.

Hit the local gunstore and their supplier was back 74 guns, and wanted $599.

He then recommended the RIA, which the supplier had for $389 and he could have one before the end of the week.

It was the best gun store gun recommendation I have ever had. It saved me $200, got me exactly what I wanted and when I wanted it, it's been dead reliable and more accurate than I ever expected an entry level 1911 to be.

It feeds anything and everything I've thrown at it, and will knock the center out of a target at 25yards from the bench.

Finish was slightly uneven on the frame, but the trigger was smooth, has about 1/16" take up, a clean break, and no over travel at all. The slide is tight to the frame with no rattle at all, and the barrel doesn't move at all in the bushing- but the bushing will drop right down the barrel when disassembled.

It was twice what I was expecting at 2/3 the price I was planning on spending.

They will definitely get business from me again when I get in the market for a 3" 1911.

i also am happy with my ria tactical. it has shot everything i have thrown at it and run fine from the very beginning. more accurate than i am. truly a great buy, 1 il never regret

I finally found a RIA GI today. Contemplated ordering one from Centerfire Systems, but this one saves me a few bucks once shipping/transfer are kicked in, so I put some money down on it.
I'm no expert, but it seemed fairly tight. Not like the Nighthawks they had or anything, but good enough(I wanted a GI style specifically, after all). Trigger had a little creep but was nice and light, not gritty at all. The RIA trademark doesn't stand out too badly, either. Now I just need to find some good mags for it without paying a fortune and I'll be just peachy. :)

Try out the factory magazine first- they may be ACTs, but it's the only magazine that I've ever used in my RIA that didn't have reliability issues for the get go.

I tried whatever comes stock in a new Para 1911 and I'd get jams on the first and last round. Bought a Kimber magazine and it wouldn't feed off a round at all.

After 45 minutes with a pair of pliers I got the kimber as reliable as the "cheap factory mag", but for the price paid I would have been better off buying two cheaper magazines and have to tweak their feed lips anyway.

My RIA 1911 has taken it's place near the top among my favorites including my P226R. Accuracy is much better than the Kimber I had.
A set of Chip McCormick rose wood grips was all I added. After several hundred rds of factory and reloads, it has yet to malfunction in any way.
Best $349 I ever spent on a new auto.

My new toy!!!:D My first 1911, first .45. I got to shoot it yesterday, and I have to say that it is great!!

Just got finished "customizing" a RIA M1911 for a friend of mine. Very evenly applied nickel finish, with a very good metal to metal fit, along with a tight fit between the slide and frame. I added all Wilson Combat parts: adjustable trigger, elongated Commander style hammer, beavertail grip safety, extended slide release, and mag well chute. All in stainless and all pre-polished before installation. My friend already had Trijicon night sights installed, and opted for Hogue wraparound finger groove rubber grips. All in all, a super looking M1911.

Hey FoMoGo, what model is that? I thought they only came in blace and bling (chrome). I absolutly love the contrasting colors that yours has.
It is a RIA duo-tone.
Parked slide and controls in a brushed nickel frame.

I read all three pages of the post through a few times, kicking myself in the nads for looking at these guns before buying a Tokarev last night. So, Ill take the $450 hit, picking an RIA up tonight.

Edit: But Alas, the GI SA 1911 in stainless was there, so I parted with an extra $130 and bought it instead, with a Kimber 22.lr conversion. Eventually, Ill buy an RIA though, there were a few there last night. Nice guns, the parkerizing on them looks a bit, uh, 'chunky', is the best way I can describe it. The smooth wood grips on it were nice as well. Good looking gun overall. Im going to pick one up for my next 1911. Damn things are addictive, I just bought one and im planning on a new one already. Have a nice day all!

RIA quality "threads" are obnoxious- they are cheap! but the first time someone says that, the vigilanties come out to cover up their error in purchasing one... get a springfield milspec and save yourself
