I am considering taking a Rossi 92 lever gun in .357 in a trade. I don't have any experience with Rossi long guns. I'm looking for opinions.

I have one..

...in 45 Colt. 24" stainless, Octagonal barrel. Bought for 275 used. Refinished the stock so it resembles walnut. Replace the horrendous factory sights with Marbles full buckhorn rear and gold bead front. Replaced mainspring with Bunkhouse spring. Have a total of $320 in her and an afternoon of work. She's smooth in the action (500+ rounds) and a tackdriver when I do my part.

Only negative is the abysmal bolt-mounted safety. Mine clickes into safe when I cycle the action. Am sending to Steve young (www.stevesguns.com) who specializes in Rossi actions. He can "do a number" on that nasty safety to make it a non-event.

Net-net -- love mine and will never sell her. Otherrs have a so-so experience with them .. seems to be luck of the draw which one you get. Navy Arms models are made by Rossi as are EMF...they are better quality but more expensive.

legacy38,

I have a Rossi '92 Carbine in .357 and a rifle in .44 Mag. Both bought around Jan 1996.

I refinished the stock of the carbine and stained it Walnut. It looks very nice after the Rossi opaque stain is removed.

The rifle had problems in the beginning. Cartridges wouldn't feed properly. It was a long time ago for my oldtimers diseased brain to remember, but it looked like I could have fixed it with a Dremel. I sent it back to get it done right. It took forever, but it has been fine ever since.

Also on the rifle the buttplate was way oversized and sharp enough to cause cuts. I filed it down to fit, rounded the edges, sanded and blued it. While I was at it I filed and rounded the lever. Mainly to make it more comfortable, but I rounded it in all areas and it looks very nice. I wish I had rounded the hammer while I had it apart to more closely copy the originals with their petite cross section and shallow grooves.

On the Carbine there was a problem with the fore end. The one that came with my gun was shaved down too much and there is a gap between it and the barel band. They sent me another for $17 including S&H. I don't know if it would have been a warranty item, but I had already refinished the original and didn't even try. The replacement fit nicely.

Believe it or not, after all that, I love them. I think the small '92 platform is much better suited to the pistol cartridges. I love the strength of the dual locking lugs.

In addition, Legacy, you won't have those problems with a used one since you'll get to see it before you buy it (mine were ordered). Also, your's should be a proven shooter.

I also slicked up both actions with auto rubbing compound. Gets 'em slicker than shooting 500 shots and in only one evening. ;)

iamkris,
What's the deal with the safety? Are they putting on "lawyer safeties" now?

Don't know when they started...

...but only the LSI imported Rossi's have them. I get the feeling only for the last few years. Certainly a lawyer safety. Navy Arms and EMFs don't have them.

It's a barrel in the top of the bolt with two tabs on the top of the barrel sticking out parallel with the top surface of the bolt.

I've been thinking about Dremelling off the tabs and grinding the barrel flush with the top of the bolt. Then squirting some lock-tite down there to keep it in Fire position. Seems like a klugey answer though and would hate for the Lock-Tite to fali and have it stuck in Safe. I use this gun in Cowboy Action competition so I should just pay the $50 for Steve Young to take care of it.

I have one also...

...in .45 Colt. Mine is one of the older model 20-ich carbines, paid $225 used. It is an absolute hoot to shoot! Negligible recoil with "cowboy"-type loads. It ranks very high on my "fun-o-meter". :)

legacy38,
I have one w/20" barrel. Bought used. Mine works fine. The metal is a bit sharp where you feed the bullets into the magazine,
but nothing major.
It shoots ok. Like the way it doesn't have much kick and it makes less noise than .357 revolver.
Just a note, here in Texas, its perfectly legal to tote around a rifle in your vehicle. This makes an excellent choice for that.

Turn mine into a scout carbine it came with the 16" bbl so added a tang peep and had a scope mount placed were the rear sight was and have added a 2 power Leop.eer style scope.
Now it goes were I go great pickup gun, just wish it was the 357max version

Leadbutt,

What mount did you use on your Rossi 92 to make it a Lever Scout?

The tang sight is an interesting thought for a Lever Scout. I have the AO Ghost ring sights on my Lever Scout Carbine.

My Lever Scout Carbine is a Winchester 1894-1994 Wrangler SRC with the Leopold M8 Scout Scope and AO Lever Scout mount.

Does your Scout Carbine have the large loop?
