What bullet type would you use in a SHTF sittuation in your AK?

Now it has been understood that there are a lot of people that would be using an ak or varient in a SHTF sittuation, so what round for it would you use if you had the choice? and why if you don't mind explaining? The reason i ask is because i have no idea what would be the best! This is also for the people that would prefer to carry another type of rifle but there ain't that option, what rd would you guys use? If it falls in the other catagory please explain! thanks!

I would go with FMJ. Wouldn't need to worry about a hollowpoint feeding correctly, and there would be more FMJ lying about. Also don't need to worry about a lack of penetration.

I dont think it matters. Anyone hit with the AK is going down.

The soft points are supposedly weak expanders, but once the barrel heats up, I would bet the soft points soften up more.

Yeah a .30 caliber round will tear up any body, pretty good no matter what you use. i personally like the 154gr because it is the most accurate that i have shot in my mak-90. I think i would use that. The only draw back would be the amount of drop with that heavy a rd out at longer ranges, like 200+. which i have only shot the ak with that load to that far, and there would probally be no reason to shot any farther than that in a SHTF sittuation anyway!

I chose the 120ish FMJ for a couple reasons.

1. better penetration.
2. better feeding.
3. Its a rifle....hollow points dont really make a difference.

The 124gr JHP Wolf military classic actually expands/fragments. So if you want that kind of round thats the one to go with. FMJ has its benefits too however.

55 gr Remington UMC FMJ and Winchester 55 gr soft point.

My AK is a 5.56mm/.223.

Reason being.. if I really thought I'd need an SHTF rifle I might want to shoot through things. Granted some like the 62 gr green tip stuff, good old 55 gr is fine by me. The soft points are for killing food.

I agree on the .223 thing

lighter, flatter shooting, armor penetrating, locally made, military supplies everywhere

I'm not sure what SHTF scenario you're thinking about, I'm thinking about zombies, a class 3 or class 4 outbreak according the Zombie Survival Guide.

Almost all the 7.62x39 I've stocked up is HP. It was all the same price when I bought it. You won't have any trouble feeling it in an AK. It's not like pistols where hollow points are blunt.

I don't feel real comfortable with softpoints in a semi-auto though. I'm sure they'd feed just fine, but they aren't as streamlined as FMJ or HPs.

Whatever flavor 223 was loaded in the mags?

Sittin' on several K of Barnaul softies at 124 grains. They feed and function just fine and open to about .40 caliber in deer tissue. A whitetail buck ran just fifteen yards and took a nosedive.

I like ball type 162s in .223 for defensive purposes.

I would opt for the Wolf HP's if there was a choice. Feeds just like a FMJ cuz the hole isn't much bigger than a pin, but it will do crazy badness on contact.

That said the FMJ's would be more than adequate to shred any type of zombie, ghoul, goblin or troll.

Either will do.

The wolf military classic does, but the normal wolf HP does not expand at all.

Me too. So far, its been the most consistent and accurate 7.62x39 I've used. The Barnaul's bullets have a jacketed base, much like Sierra's JSP's.

The Wolf fmj and hp's both have an exposed lead base, much like the 147 grain .30 caliber GI ammo and the commercial versions. Their hp's are not a true hp and are not made with a jacketed base, like the match bullets they seem to copy. I have a bunch of the Wolf too, including the 154 grain sp's, and none have been near as accurate or consistent as the Barnaul.

I wonder why the new Wolf "Military Classic" expands, whereas there old HP line doesn't? Did they make the jackets thinner? I don't see "Military Classic" on their website either.

Edit: I did a web search and found that Military Classic is at the Ulyanovsk plant, not Tula.

From personal experience, the Wolf HP ammo is more prone to fragmenting or flatening and going sideways than the FMJ Wolf. Since they cost the same, I would go with the HP since it feeds 100% in my guns.

Wasn't Barnual made at the Uly plant? Or am I thinking of Silver Bear?
Its my understanding that Barnaul is now being distributed under the Silver Bear label. I havent been able to get Barnaul for quite awhile now, at least not under that label. The cases of Barnaul I have are marked "JSC Barnaul Machine-Tool Plant"
