I like the idea of the 10/22 takedown. I just am not sure what I would use it for.

To those of you with the 10/22 takedown, how often and under what circumstance to do you use the takedown feature? I guess you could say it is compact for storage in a vehicle, but I am still not sure why i need it.

I've thought about getting one for camping. I go on fishing trips a couple times a year where we go about 40 miles by water and then camp. It would be handy to have the takedown to fit in the storage compartment of the boat. Then again that purpose would be better suited to a marlin papoose or Henry survival rifle. Better yet a buckmark or a small revolver in a holster. So in short I haven't figured out what I would do with one either.

I can't speak for the 10/22 take-down, but what I do like about take-down guns is that they can fit into bags that aren't rifle length or rifle shaped.

I've had five take-down guns, even though they weren't advertised that way. Now I'm down to three.

I'm kinda thinking I'd like to try a folding stock the next time around. :)

If you're like me, my eyes arent what they once were with a hsndgun. Nowadays, if i have something thst i really, REALLY, want to put a hole in..(skunk, rat, snake,?)... i reach for a rifle.
I think a little takedown rifle with a light would be ideal on a csmping trip or canoe trip.
My fsmily takes a week-long vacation every year and we rent a cabin to stsy in. I have been known to keep a rifle handy, Especially since i started carrying a 'mouse gun' as an edc.
I was considering a 10/22TD for myself, but opted for an AR pistol instead.
If i go somewhere for any length of time, it goes with me.

A guy that I run into occasionally bought one and he seems to like it although it seems to spend 98% of the time "taken down" and stored. So I'm guessing that's the same "niche market" that stuff like the Henry AR-7 Survival rifle appeals to. There's lots of situations where a light, compact, unit like that would be nice.

I've had a 10/22 take-down for a few years. I store it in the take-down position as that is how it fits in the Ruger backpack bag. It does make it really easy to clean the barrel when broken down. With a regular scope mounted it won't fit in the bag unless the scope is quick disconnect.
It takes about 30 seconds for me to assemble the rifle and attach the scope. Holds zero really well.
The bag floats with the rifle inside, although by the time I added the scope, two additional 25 round magazines and 6 boxes of CCI Stingers, it is too heavy for any floating.

I have one of those silly bug out bags. It's got a bunch of survival supplies including dried food, water, and a 10-22 with a few hundred rounds. I keep the 10-22 in the takedown set up with ammo and a magazine packed in the stock. It's the backpacker version.

I'm not one of those weirdos waiting for society to crumble so I can go play Rambo. This is just something I can grab and throw in a rig to get out of dodge in a hurry if we ever had to.

This is the one I think is the most interesting. Look through the pictures.

The problem I always envision with takedown guns is what do I do with two loose halves of a gun other than put them in there bulky carry case? This one appeals to me since the two halves clip together and I could put it in a backpack, under the truck seat, boat compartment, ect without being married to the carry case and without the parts getting separated. Plus it holds 3 mags in the stock and 1 in the receiver which is sweet. I like the idea of a self contained package. I played with one in the store and it worked nice.

Had no specific purpose in mind apart from finding a full size rifle for my son when I purchased one. It’s used and stored like a standard 10/22 but offers easier cleaning and a stuffable length if ever called for. You do pay a premium for that but I didn’t mind. At some point a Papoose is on my to-buy list. That one for its weight as much as anything.

I would have bought that TD you just linked to if it was available at the time. I like the 3 BX1 mags in the stock ! .

Yeah the more I look at it the more its making sense to me to have it. I have a nice little cubby hole in my suburban where the jack goes that this would fit perfectly in. I could also see this strapped to the outside of a backpack for hiking. I think I would keep a magazine in the receiver, an extra in the stock, and the other two compartments for a baggie of extra ammo, and a rolled up nylon sling. Maybe even some waterproof matches.

Yea i see how it would fit in tight places, but why would i need a disassembled gun in my trip or on a backpack?

If I could just figure that out I would have one lol. My inner 10 year old boy in me likes the idea of bringing of it, but in all the camping, 4 wheeling, and ice fishing trips where I have brought a gun with (usually a browning buckmark or 357 revolver) I have yet to ever discharge it. I use the excuse of bear protection to bring the 357 but the black bear of northern Minnesota are not exactly ferocious. Actually my last couple trips I brought my LC9s in my front jean pocket which was much less obtrusive, though equally useless.

I've thought about the takedown 10/22 and Charger and I've come to the conclusion that if you're going to mount and optic on it, don't get a takedown. I think it's an iron sights gun only and really, that's what it should be because the idea of the Takedown is to be more portable and easier to carry. An 8 ounce scope and rings and a base... it just adding weight to something that doesn't need it.

What I've been turned onto lately is a Charger pistol with a Sig brace on it. The way the brace is attached, you can remove the brace and just have the bare pistol, so it's kind of takedown-ish and you can put a suppressor on the Charger and from the bolt face to the end of the suppressor, you'll be right around a 16 inch length, so you're getting a shorter OAL with it and a suppressor you can take off and use on something else.

With the integrally suppressed 10/22 Takedown barrel Ruger offers, it's only able to be used on a 10/22. I'd rather spend my money wisely and have a suppressor I can use on multiple .22's.

Ha, I have made many a gun purchase over the years because of that inner 10 yr old boy!

I have a 10/22 Takedown and use it a lot. I keep it in the case and take it on most road trips. I also strap it to the front of my ATV rack when I am out riding in the desert. I am lucky to be able to ride straight out of my garage down a few streets and hit the dirt. The rifle, in the takedown case, draws no attention, stays dust free, and provides an additional activity for the ATV rides. It is also great for throwing in the backpack when I am fishing up in the Sierras. I recently updated it with a X22 stock, red dot, and a Tac Sol barrel. It is really lightweight and compact. I am taking it out this weekend for some T&E.

I could probably do the same thing with a regular 10/22, but like the way it fits in a small place, is inconspicuous, and is RTG in a few seconds.

Its a cool idea, but since I would store it in my truck or jeep, I have found I have plenty of room to store whatever gun in either that I want.

''...how often and under what circumstance to do you use the takedown feature?...''

Never thought of it b4 but what about secure storage? Dad is at work, Mom is at work. Kids get home an hour or 2 b4 parents, the barreled portion is with Dad. Kids cannot play with it.
Or in the rare event of a break in, the rifle is stored in different areas. Most break ins are snatch & grabs , get in & get out. The receiver is in the upstairs bedroom but the barrel is in the basement.

Here is just a quick follow up to this thread. We took the TD along on a varmint hunt and used it to kill some down time. It is nice to have a compact rifle when you have a full load of "other" hunting gear. The rifle shot great and we had fun plinking around out to 100 yards. It would also be great for the apocalypse or after the zombies come, at least that's what my son thinks!
