I think they are totally different rifles and I love my 10/22, but I want to get my little sister a repeater for her birthday this june. currently she has a single shot .17 HMR and she's becoming a real crackshot, but I'd like to get her a .22LR.

What all can be done to the M60s? Any trigger work? What about scope mounting?

How reliable are they compared to the 10/22s?

I don't own a 10/22, but I've had the same Marlin 60 since 1982. They have dovetail scope mounts. I put a Bushnell 4x on it, and it will drive tacks at 50 yds. It's easy to break down and clean, and I have had zero problems with it. It's my favorite gun, actually.

It's a tube feed gun, versus the magazine feed of the 10/22. That may make a difference for you, I don't know. I've had a few jams, of which all could be attributed to very old ammo, or me not cleaning the action for thousands of rounds. The Model 60 doesn't lend itself as well to modifying, as does the 10/22. There are tons of accessories and aftermarket stocks, etc. for the 10/22, if that's your game. I like my Marilin though.

The Marlin in general is a bit more accurate than the 10/22 out of the box. Not as easy to clean. Generally pretty reliable in my experience. The tube mag is better in my opinion. No problems, no mag tuning or cleaning. And after a half brick range session no sore fingers from loading the darn magazine.

The Marlin cannot be tweaked like a 10/22, but just out of the box it has some useful advantages.

I've got 2 Marlin 60s and they both have given me nothing but problems. Even after replacing some of the internals related to the problems (always ejection/feeding problems), the problems persist. There are tons of aftermarket mods for the 10/22, not so many for the Marlin. I know plenty of people love their 60s, but if I could trade both of mine for a working 10/22 I'd do it in a heartbeat. I do like the tube mag though - 18rds and it doesn't hang out the bottom of the gun.

I decided on a Model 60 simply so I wouldn't have to deal with magazines. I didn't mind the lack of aftermarket stuff for a fun plinker. Stuck a scope on it, and I have a Spee-D-Loader which lets me load the tube real fast, and I am all set! I have had no problems with it, and really haven't cleaned it yet either.
