Very pleased that I found a Ruger 77/357 bolt action .357 magnum carbine! Very light and handy...a lot like an M1 Carbine in many ways. Every feature of this little gun is impressive. Great safety, very smooth bolt.

Won't get to shoot it until June but that's not far off. The proof I suppose will be in the pudding then.

There aren't a lot of 77/357s out there. The 77/44 predominates. Here in Indiana they are both legal to hunt deer with so apparently the deer hunters must prefer the 44...based on the inventories I am seeing. But for me, I have a 357 with others in the plan and ammo on hand already. Perfect size for general purpose use.

I guess I'm not a "serious deer hunter" then. I bought mine to hunt deer with. Got one last season with it.

I am leaning toward the M77/44 mainly cause I got some really enormous wild hogs nearby. normally I am a bolt action guy in flat shooting calibers (like .308, imagine that). I am leaning toward a pistol caliber because of a pasture I got permission to hunt on has a road nearby and a house about half mile away. also the .44mag just has so much more options as far as bullet weights. I also always carry a .44 mag Blackhawk as a sidearm so it would make more sense to me, still thinking about a lever action carbine if I can find a decent one.

The 77/44 is nice also in that it comes also in Blue/Wood. The 77/357 is a Stainless/Composite only proposition at the moment.

Bradis. Right there on the rack...the only one I've ever seen...anywhere. Even Cabela's up in Hammond didn't have one. I was at the right place at the right time I guess. Good luck. Bradis (see Dave) is a bone fide Ruger distributor. They will be able to get one for you I suspect.

I hope you guy have good luck with the handgun calibered 77's. I had one in 7.62x39. Now someone else owns it. Enough said.

Since you didn't say much of anything useful, I would dispute whether enough was said or not. Just saying.

PS. This isn't the Bill Ruger beef again is it? Please say it isn't!

You'll enjoy that M77

@HoosierQ: You're gonna love that rifle. I have it & sidekick it with a S&W 28-2 revolver. The S&W 28-2 is a .357 old school service revolver built on their larger N frame normally reserved for .44 Mags, because of that, the cylinder is bigger, and the double speedloader pouch I have for it accommodates the size of the 77's mag. Imagine that! So, I have the mag in the rifle, two more on the belt, and two speedloaders for the revolver.
To get the most out of that sweet rifle, team it up with Kevin Underwood's .357 Magnum ammo.

It is absolutely hands-down the perfect compliment to any .357 rifle and/or handgun. He has several offerings, but I prefer his 125 grain Sierra Sportsmaster Jacketed Hollow Points. Those babies are hot and consistent at 1600fps, delivering 711 ft lbs of energy. Out of that 77, you can see speeds of damn near 2000fps, with equal gain in ft lbs of energy.
I have several M1 Carbines, and other than my fondness of the 15 and 30rd magazines, and the Ruger .30 BlackHawk revolver I have, the .357 at the 100 meter mark kicks the little carbine's ass in all areas.
Just my two cents. Stumbled across this post late night surfing for M1 Carbine parts, actually!
@AKA108: If you're a fan of the 7.62x39 caliber as I am, do yourself a huge favor and pick up a Savage 10FCM Scout. Mate it with a good scout scope and bipod of your choice & it's an all day killer at 220 meters. At that range, I break the small Daisy brand clay targets made for pellet rifles, without destroying their holder. If you hate Savage, check out the two beauties from Mossberg. Their MVP Predator Series rifles are rock solid and beautiful. I have the one in 5.56 that uses AR mags, with a 20" Heavy Barrel. Next for me is their same rifle in 7.62x39 but with a 24" Heavy Barrel.
Take care, Gents, and happy hunting.

Very cool!

Those things at Ruger website are nearly $1000! Wow.

Not the same but, years ago I had a Marlin lever action rifle in 357 Magnum. I would load the Lyman RNFP cowboy bullet, the one with the really fat grease groove, over 2400 for really accurate, really flat performance to about 125 yards. After that it was rainbow trajectory city. I could shoot all day for about $.07 per round, and really have fun.

What a neat rifle.

<--- wonders @ the pressures .357" can be pushed to in a bolt action rifle...

and how exciting the day would be when you accidentally put some of your rifle ammo in the revolver...

Hey HoosierQ,

Its June :D
Yep. Can't wait. Took the bolt apart and detail cleaned all the factory gunk out of there. I'll be going up the 26th to give it a try. Even managed to find some ammo for the thing. Got some 158 grainers and some 150 grain LeverEvolution rounds for it.

I wish I were going up sooner but I've taken the day off so really make a day of it.

I really enjoyed my 77/44, but, the accuracy was not great! 4"at 100 with 240's.
With 200-210gr bullets, it grouped near 2". That's o.k.
My needs are a 44 mag that shoots at least 240's inside 2". This rifle didn't deliver.

In every other category, the rifle is super!

I had a look at the 77/357 at a local store. I wasn't all that impressed to be honest.
Fit and finish wasn't as good as the 77/44.

The barrel throat was wayyyy to long! If I cant seat a bullet at least close to the rifling, my options are limited. Accuracy is very important to me.

Should've got one. Went lever instead -- the worry I had about the ruger 357 was that it didn't guarantee it'd work with 38 specials well (levers certainly do).

77/357 and 77/44 for deer???

Why do you want to shoot a deer with a pop-gun? Four inch group at 100 yards not good??? Its a revolver caliber! At 100 yards its got a trajectory like a baseball. These guns have their place but shooting deer with them isn't the place! They are more properly used to dispatch vermin and general shooting chores where the range is close. Taking a crack at a deer with either caliber out at 100 yards is just plain irresponsible!

You're assuming the OP is gonna take long distance shots at game because he shot groups at 100yds. He never said it was for taking 100yd+ shots. I know a lot of people who take deer with 357mag but they know the limitations if the round and work within those limitations.

Limitations? Oh yea like being close enough to shake hand with the deer! That's just about what the limitation would be.

Here in Ohio, 50 yard shots at deer are very common. I would guess Indiana is similar. We're still Shotgun only though.:(

The whole deer shooting thing is funny...and comments are relative to what the thread is about it seems.

This thread is about a handy little pistol caliber carbine that is legal to hunt deer with here in Indiana...albeit the minimum allowed. So we've got the whole "get a bigger gun boy!" crowd out in force.

Somewhere else, a guy's probably got a thread where he's fixing to use his .338 Win Mag on a deer because he's to broke to hunt elk and the whole "never shot a deer with anything bigger than a 22-250" or the "my Daddy never shot a deer with anything bigger than a 32-20 in his whole life and he was the deer shootin'est man in America" crowd will be out in force.

At least everybody agrees that .243 and 30-30 is good for deer:D
