Actually, judging from the posts I've seen around the internetz - you have your doubters about .243. :D

Congrats on your new rifle. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I have mixed feelings about this thread.

When I saw it, I looked online at Bud's for the 77/357, expecting to be disappointed once again. But lo and behold, they were in stock! So I have one on the way.

Now I have to sell a gun to balance it out. ;)

At least everybody agrees that .243 and 30-30 is good for deer

I was gonna say the same! Make that .30-30 and .270win and you'd be spot on. But there are some who think .243 is a little light. Me? I don't hunt, so I don't really care. I just sit back and enjoy the bickering.

To keep us on target, I love the .357 carbine idea. I have a Rossi M92 in .357mag that I love and am thinking of the Ruger 77/357 just so I can scope it and get the maximum potential accuracy from the cartridge.

I wonder what kind of groups you could get with the Hornady Leverevolution ammo in a 77/.357 with a good scope.

Well what a day of shooting I had with my new 77/357. I didn't push it too hard because I am having a "bad eye day" and I spent most of the time fiddling with another gun. However, the thing worked like a dream. It fed well. It shot spot on. It even digested some round-nose .38 specials just fine. Worked the bolt fast and hard and they fed great. I am super please. Plenty accurate for me as I'm so visually challenged (ABMD) that shooting a carbine like this beyond 25 or 50 yards would be to shoot and something I couldn't see very clearly anyway.

I love this little rifle and I look forward to doing some more methodical shooting to find what loads work best. Very accurate as far as I can tell so far.

When I first heard of the 77 in .357, I figured it was just guys that had .357 handguns that might want it. That's why I bought my Rossi 92 years ago, that and thought it'd be a good brush gun. But, you're starting to make me think a 77 in .357 might be a fun idea, accurate, all I need in the woods, here. I don't wanna put a scope on the lever gun, just makes 'em look fugly, but my eyes protest in the time light of the woods with iron sights. They're getting to the point they need trifocals. Age sux.

Anyway, corgrats and have fun. :D

I just picked one of these up as well!! What a great handling little rifle from what I can tell in the store. I'm going to get it to the range in the next couple of days. I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm going to be shooting iron sights for a bit but would like to scope it. Any suggestions on a good'un? I'm thinking a fixed 4x but am open to ideas.

I hunt deer a lot with my 1894c in 357 mag. I load 15.5gr lil gun below a 175gr ranch dog boolit that's been water cooled. Those are some hard hitting bullets and I would not hesitate on moose if I absolutely had to (as in an injured, jumping on three legs type moose..) shoot.

Anyway, it's a great deer round. I've got plenty deer with it while stalking in dense woods so distances are close. None over 60 yards. For sitting in a hide I usually go with a 308, but that's because I haven't got a scope on my 1894..

Sounds like an unlikely combo, but the 77/357 is plenty practical IMHO. Pistol cartridges and whitetail mix AFAIC. That is if you were wanting to hunt deer with it. I've noticed that several people have stated that the 77/357 and 77/44 are built on the smaller 22 hornet frame. Not that this is a bad thing, but it interest me nonetheless. While I'm quite partial to lever guns, the 6 plus 1 capacity exhibited by smaller lever guns that are chambered in pistol cartridges, isn't too far off from the 77/357's 5 plus 1 capacity. I'm surprised they even brought back the 77/44, and developed the 77/357, but with people suppressing them I think they'll find their niche market. They could offer them with threaded barrels, and a more "tacticool" appearance, or not.
