Nice! I just recently purchased the M77 Hawkeye in 25-06 as my deer rifle. I really like it. I like your 77/357. Don't need one, but want one.:D

Im a big fan of peep sights, and I tried one of the NECG peep sights, and found it lacking. While it seems well made, its fiddly to get zeroed, tends to block out your field of view, and needs to be mounted on the more forward of the two scope mounting points, which puts it farther away from your eye than I like. The reason it needs to be in that position is, if its on the rear one, where it really needs to be, it interferes with working the bolt.

Thanks for posting that tidbit about the NECG sight. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on one, and was not sure about the front sight height. Never even thought about your other points. Thanks again. :)

I am pretty happy with my 77/357. I am getting good groups with cheap Federal 158 grain JSP ammo from Walmart.

I am using a Mark AR 1.5-4 Leupold, and I like the whole package.

I've been on the fence about scoping this rifle.....I did try a Bushnell Trophy I have on hand but it is too close to work the bolt.

Any ideas or recommendations?

Will the 77/.357 take the .38 Special loads for cheap fun, and how well do they perform?
Yes, I've been using a few types of .38s all 158g LRN, Its all over the place using CCI Blazer(.357mag included) but really seemed to settle down running brass cased Magtech and AE ...
Part of the reason I want to scope it is the get a solid feel for how and what this rifle likes to run.

This is mine with an old Leupold fixed 4X compact on it. It works well, and seems about perfect for the gun.

I've never experienced any of the issues AK103K mentioned. My NEGC peep has been nothing but reliable, accurate, dead-nuts on, and very well built. Highly recommended.

I scoped mine with an el-cheapo BSA Cat's Eye 1.5~4.5x32, and have no clearance issues. The Leupold 4x looks to be a most excellent choice.

I would trade this nifty little carbine for the right Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine .44

Alrighty then. Now you got me thinking again. Did you have to change the front sight? Is yours a 44 mag?

If you slide the sight back to the first mounting point, where its closer to your eye and where I think it should be mounted, the bolt wont open/operate. That was my main complaint. For $85+, I guess I was expecting a little more.

It is well made, and does work once you get it zeroed, but its wasnt as easy to do, as some of the others Ive used. I just found it wasnt as "usable" as some of the other peeps Ive used on other guns.

If anyone is looking for one at a discount, let me know, I still have mine, and its basically NIB.

Mine's a .44 Mag. It's one of the original ones from 1999 (or whenever they first came out)

I merely folded the front sight down. You can see it in my pic ↑

I would jump on AK's offer!

Not the folding sight. I meant, did it work with the front sight post that came on the gun, or did you have to replace it with a taller bead/post?

You mean somethng like this...... :)

That one is a .45, but Ive had a couple of .44's as well. Great little guns. I have another .45 like the one above, thats parkerized as well.

Doh! The factory front sight height is just right.. Didn't have to change a thing. I had to scope it up because of my near-sightedness. Dead-nuts on at 50yds when using my 240gr XTP handloads. Past that, I can't see a thing! LoL

Exactly, AK! 'Cept I want a .44 Mag

The Winchester Trappers are sweet handling little shooters. A bunch of hot, jacketed rounds arent always real pleasant, but lighter loaded LSWC's make them day long plinkers. :)

Im not sure if Im really sold on the Ruger yet. It seems to be a decent rifle, but Im kind of wavering with it. Im going to fit a butt plate (of course they dont offer one ) to mine and see how it goes.

AK,how much would you be asking?
Ill take $65 shipped.

That Leupold is basically the scope you see on my rifle. Mines an old "M8 Compact" which I believe they now designate as the FX series.

After looking at the couple posted here today sans scope, I just popped mine off. It looks and feels so much cleaner without it. For now, the search will just continue for another type of rear aperture.

Now all I gotta do is wait for Brownells to get that buttplate out to me. :)

The factory butt plate on my 77/44 was pretty hard rubber, it bruised me up pretty good shooting full house loads. Also, the LOP was a little short. So, I removed it & super glued on one of those slip-on Decelerator pads, now it's MUCH more comfortable to shoot.

I've thought about scoping mine since my large melon makes it difficult to line up the open sights. It does resonate with me however when some say they tried going with a scope, and ended up taking it back off.

I can understand your desire for a cleaner "No Scope" setup. The more I looked at the picture of the NECG sight on the 77/357, it looks very much like the same location as a 1903A3 peep sight. Does the NECG sight allow removal of the aperture altogether to unable a "Ghost Ring" setup?

I really like the scope I chose for mine. I am able to work the bolt just fine, and it is a fast setup to use. I am 60 years old, and the eyes are not too good anymore. The 1.5 power setting enables me to keep both eyes open, and the leupold optic makes the target nice and clear.

I think about the possibility of a nice peep sight to keep the gun trim and more compact, and less vulnerable to any knocks that may happen in the field.

The screw in aperture is the "lock" for the elevation plate. I wanted to do the same thing, but found I couldnt, or at least I thought Id probably loose the plate under recoil at some point without it. Also, with the aperture removed, the "hole" doenst appear as round, but more of a rectangle.

Even with the aperture out of the plate, you really dont gain much more anyway, as the hole really isnt much bigger than the "large" aperture they supply.

Answers all my questions. Thank you. The NECG sight looked like the cats pajama's, but it does have its eccentricities. I cannot believe they lock the elevation with the aperture. Having to rezero with an aperture change would suck. Oh well.....the search continues.

I may just sell the Ruger, and some other guns, and buy a Noveske and call it a day. :D
