Im a big fan of peep sights, and I tried one of the NECG peep sights, and found it lacking. While it seems well made, its fiddly to get zeroed, tends to block out your field of view, and needs to be mounted on the more forward of the two scope mounting points, which puts it farther away from your eye than I like. The reason it needs to be in that position is, if its on the rear one, where it really needs to be, it interferes with working the bolt.
Yes, I've been using a few types of .38s all 158g LRN, Its all over the place using CCI Blazer(.357mag included) but really seemed to settle down running brass cased Magtech and AE ...Will the 77/.357 take the .38 Special loads for cheap fun, and how well do they perform?
I've never experienced any of the issues AK103K mentioned. My NEGC peep has been nothing but reliable, accurate, dead-nuts on, and very well built. Highly recommended. Thanks for posting that tidbit about the NECG sight. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on one, and was not sure about the front sight height. Never even thought about your other points. Thanks again.
Alrighty then. Now you got me thinking again. Did you have to change the front sight? Is yours a 44 mag?I've never experienced any of the issues AK103K mentioned. My NEGC peep has been nothing but reliable, accurate, dead-nuts on, and very well built. Highly recommended.
I scoped mine with an el-cheapo BSA Cat's Eye 1.5~4.5x32, and have no clearance issues. The Leupold 4x looks to be a most excellent choice.
I would trade this nifty little carbine for the right Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine .44
Mine's a .44 Mag. It's one of the original ones from 1999 (or whenever they first came out)Alrighty then. Now you got me thinking again. Did you have to change the front sight? Is yours a 44 mag?
Doh! The factory front sight height is just right.. Didn't have to change a thing. I had to scope it up because of my near-sightedness. Dead-nuts on at 50yds when using my 240gr XTP handloads. Past that, I can't see a thing! LoLNot the folding sight. I meant, did it work with the front sight post that came on the gun, or did you have to replace it with a taller bead/post?
The Winchester Trappers are sweet handling little shooters. A bunch of hot, jacketed rounds arent always real pleasant, but lighter loaded LSWC's make them day long plinkers.Exactly, AK! 'Cept I want a .44 Mag
Ill take $65 shipped.AK,how much would you be asking?
Leupold FXII 4x33 Fixed Riflescope W/Wide Duplex Reticle & Matte FinishAny ideas for scopes with a small(er) diameter ocular?
I can understand your desire for a cleaner "No Scope" setup. The more I looked at the picture of the NECG sight on the 77/357, it looks very much like the same location as a 1903A3 peep sight. Does the NECG sight allow removal of the aperture altogether to unable a "Ghost Ring" setup? That Leupold is basically the scope you see on my rifle. Mines an old "M8 Compact" which I believe they now designate as the FX series.
After looking at the couple posted here today sans scope, I just popped mine off. It looks and feels so much cleaner without it. For now, the search will just continue for another type of rear aperture.
Now all I gotta do is wait for Brownells to get that buttplate out to me.
.
I've thought about scoping mine since my large melon makes it difficult to line up the open sights. It does resonate with me however when some say they tried going with a scope, and ended up taking it back off.
The screw in aperture is the "lock" for the elevation plate. I wanted to do the same thing, but found I couldnt, or at least I thought Id probably loose the plate under recoil at some point without it. Also, with the aperture removed, the "hole" doenst appear as round, but more of a rectangle.Does the NECG sight allow removal of the aperture altogether to unable a "Ghost Ring" setup?
Answers all my questions. Thank you. The NECG sight looked like the cats pajama's, but it does have its eccentricities. I cannot believe they lock the elevation with the aperture. Having to rezero with an aperture change would suck. Oh well.....the search continues. The screw in aperture is the "lock" for the elevation plate. Even with the aperture out of the plate, you really dont gain much more anyway, as the hole really isnt much bigger than the "large" aperture they supply.
