found ruger gp100 .357 online for $229 and highly recomended by you all as a good non-carried sd gun for the price, need a few more opinions though. I want a fun gun to shoot at the range:rolleyes: but more importantly to hold down the fort.
Q1: bullets cheap and easy to get? Q2: 4" barrel ok or should i look for something in a 6"?

.38 special cartridges are on the cheap side...although recently in my area their price has gone $2 ahead of 9mm (a few years ago .38 spl and 9mm were essentially equally priced). I can find .38 spl reloads for $7.99 for 50 around here, you may find a better deal in your part of the country.

I think the 4" GP is a good all around gun. However, to me the best BALANCED GP was the 6" with short shroud (no longer made). I was lucky enough to get this model when it was still available, and I prefer its balance and handling by far over the 4" full shroud.

That's a great price - grab it. Yes ammo of all sorts in .38 special and .357 magnum is plentiful and cheap. Also, the 4" tube is just fine, you would want the 6" if hunting or consistently shooting >50 yards.

Get it, Get it, Get it! I'd heard for years that not only will you fall in love with wheelguns, but they'll improve your overall shooting. I got my first revolver recently and discovered what I'd heard to be sage wisdom. Shooting that old M&P in DA forces you to maintain sight, trigger, and breath control. I now wonder how I used to live with only semi-autos; it was a dark time for me.

The velocity differences sometimes arn't that great:

Revolvers are great. And ugaarguy is on the money about wheelies improving your shooting abilities. I alos bought a pre-WW2 Smith and Wesson M&P last summer. It has the old long action and if you're not adhering to the basics it will defintely show on the target.

Ruger makes a solid revolver. I own both an SP101 with the 2.25 inch barrel and a GP 100 with the six inch barrel. Unless you're planning on carrying a six inch model shoulkd do fine as a fun gun and a house gun. I prefer six inch barrels for target shooting and just looks. Guess I'm shallow.

If the gun is clean, that's a real good price!
You can not, not, NOT go wrong with a GP100! It's my house gun because the whole family shoots it well, it's accurate, and yes, in the right holster it carries just fine. :)
