Ruger MKII standard

This little orphan has been languishing in the local pawn display case for some time, sharing space with the “big” relatives. I looked at it every time I was there but never checked it out. The hang tag was $299 so I never gave it too much thought, because I didn’t feel like negotiating for it as they probably would not come down much. I recently scored a 10” MKII there and checked it out while I was waiting paperwork.

Well last week at lunch I decided to buy it provided the price was right. I bargained with the owner some but did not get to my price, the owner said best he could do is $250, but took my number for his son who I originally spoke with about the gun. The son called me and offered $210 plus tax & Brady (I was willing to go $220). I said I’ll be there this afternoon. So now it has a new home.

Took it out yesterday and it shoots great.

I got the box, papers and pistol. It appears to be LNIB and maybe fired only a few times.

A VERY similar gun carried me to a 288/300 Bullseye score back when I could see iron sights well and shot Conventional Pistol in a league some years back (1980's).

Yup, I would have jumped at $250. $210 is fantastic.
Very nice. I have the 4-5/8" WBR/NRA commemorative, accurate and runs like a top.

Congrats on a great buy.
I just love the Ruger "MK" series .22 Autos.
My own is a MK 1 Bull Barrel that I bought eons ago, like in 1970.
Price on the box reads $54.00.
I shoot about 1000 rounds/ year through it and I had to replace the firing pin 25 or so years ago.

Depends on how you feel about new Mark III features like loaded chamber indicator, the magazine safety, and the magazine release in the Colt/Luger position (rather than heel of butt on the Mark II).

I own a Mark II, blue, 6 inch tapered barrel, so I am Prejudiced. Difference between the two really depends on which one you are most familiar with.

I'll take MKIIs over IIIs any day. IIIs are much more user unfriendly to disassemble (at least for our customers) and our smith says the triggers are much more difficult to tune..
I picked up a like new MKI the other day (a real MKI, the target model--the MK designation started with the target gun..the others were called "standard automatic".) It shoots great, just like its little brother, the MKII than hangs beside it in the safe. ($250, but I had to find a magazine for it)

I like my Mark iii a LOT. When I press the mag release button instead of the heal release, I like that a lot too. I've heard complaints about the chamber loaded lever on the Mark iii, but to date (knock) mine has been a non issue.

To me it does. I was not impressed at all with my Mark III hunter. The barrel leaded badly, it had sharp edges and the LCI is very unattractive (IMO) and it just didn't shoot as well as my Mark II.

The heel release on the Mark II doesn't bother me, although sometimes after shooting it I start reaching for heel releases on other guns that aren't there.

I have shot both the MKII and MKIII in bullseye competition. Both guns need a VQ extractor to be more reliable (the VQ part has a much sharper edge on it, prevents stove-pipes). The MKII for me needed an extended mag release. The mag safety on the MKIII is crap but it is easily removed using one of Sam Lam's bushings from Rimfire Central or a Clark or VQ MKII bushing.

The LCI some people find annoying, some people find it gets dirty and causes jams. I agree it could have been implemented better, but there is an LCI filler piece sold on RFC if you don't like it. I personally like it because it helps me know quickly if the pistol has picked up the next round in the mag or not without having to manipulate the bolt to check. Which isn't to say I rely on the LCI to tell me the gun is clear, I would NEVER do that. But in competition the LCI can tell you that you are loaded. I also find the LCI useful with new shooters, but always remind them that the gun is always loaded until you visually and physically inspect the chamber.

I don't like the stock grips on either gun, so I put some Hogues on the MKII and VQ Volthane on the MKIII.

As for accuracy, they are the same. As far as the triggers, I don't see any difference between a MKII and a MKIII with the mag. disconnect safety removed; the mechanisms are virtually identical. Plus VQ makes a great drop-in trigger kit for the gun that is easily installed yourself.

Overall the MK-series guns are great.

I still love mine too. 'Course mine was only 92 bucks new all those years ago.


In fact my NIB KMK-512 many years later was only $259. Times change.
