My uncle recently gave me this Ruger no.3 in 45/70, a previous owner added the octagonal barrel. I am looking for suggestions for aperture sights for it. If I could attach the rear to the weaver base that is on the rifle it would be convenient. I was thinking some sort of globe style front sight.

Thanks

take a look at the williams WGRS-336, its a flat bases receiver sight that may fit on your barrel. if the hole spaceing is right your in. eastbank.

eastbank, I wonder if that Williams sight would fit on my No.3 30-40 Krag. It would be nice to know what the spacing is, I have the regular rounded barrel.

the williams muzzleloader peep sights seem like they'd work well, flat on the bottom. I'm hoping I can make the sights screw into the 6-48 holes that the weaver base was mounted on

If you are going to use it as a hunting rifle I would put a scope on it ( you already have the base) and with a scope you get about 30 more minutes of hunting time in the morning and at night due to the light gathering with a scope. And as you get older the worse your eyes get the more you will like a scope. When I was younger all my rifles had open sights on them until I figured out that my buddies with scopes got about a extra hour to hunt each day because they could see when I couldn't see my sights.
