was going to change out the barrel on my 10/22. i seen a barrel/stock pack from butler creek, and was wondering what you guys thought of the product. does the barrel shoot as good as the barrels that are three times the price? how is the overmolded stock? just wondering if its worth the 125.00, or if it would be better to save up for one thats a little more expensive. i am wanting a good shooting gun, but dont need it to be a olympic style, 2000.00$ gun in the end. just a tit bit more accurat than the origonal.

thanks aa lot guys, and have a Merry Christmas. brian

Green Mountain

Green Mountain barrel is the way to go. I would stay away from the BC. Many will tell you that you need one of those fat bull barrels but the sporter or heavy sporter will shoot just as well and work in your factory stock. You don't need a hogue or any other stock unless you want a lighter or just better looking rifle.

My suggestion would be the 16 inch fluted sporter and keep the factory stock. It will shoot just as good as the guys with the pretty $1200 guns. Spend your money on a good scope instead of a stock and you'll be happy.:D

Several years ago, I was right where you are now. So I bought the Butler Creek barrel and stock combo from Cabelas. It is a heavy barrel, but not the true .920" bull barrel, so maybe it it a heavy sporter. Anyway, after installing the barrel, it wouldn't group very well. The first 2-3 shots would string about an inch right to left, then group good. Did this on every magazine. A good friend of mine who is a machinist and at home "gunsmith" looked at it for me. He said that there was a "shadow" in the barrel a few inches from the breech. So we cut the end of the barrel off, fe-faced and re-crowned the end, just barely being able to stay away from SBR. After that, I can put 10 shots into a dime or less at 50 yards off of bags all day long if I do my part.

Maybe it was just that barrel, but I wouldn't get another one like it if I were building a 10/22.
