Ruger SP101 pocket carry?

I can carry my SP in the back pocket of most Denim Pants and I have carried it in the front pocket of my Carpenter Pants which are heavy Denim with good sized pockets. I'm a fat guy so it's not to bad. I prefer to carry it IWB and carry a 642 in the pocket for a backup. As for lightweight Pants forget about pocket carry with the SP.

Lots of people swear by this and I'll bet you get lots of "Yes" responses but...I just can't do it. It pulls my pants down and feels like a brick in my pocket...even with a good belt.

Love carrying it in a good IWB holster all day tho'

For pocket carry I needed to downgrade to a LCP...just have to give up some firepower getting into the .380

If you are going to pocket carry only and want a revolver, J frame is probably worth a look before the SP101

No, the SP101 is too big and heavy unless the pockets are made of chainmail and the size of a knapsack.

I think body type and jean size is everything. If you wear your jeans way loose with belt you should be ok. I can't carry a 24oz snubby in my front pocket but the back jeans pocket is great. I'm in need of a Jenny Craig plan though. X

No.
A steel J-Frame S&W is plenty enough for me.

A SP-101 weighs 6 oz more and is bigger all the way around.

Thank you! How about this?

Yep. Depends on the pants. If it doesn't fit, I'll iwb a cz 2075 rami.
It's all about options!

Pocket carry is the most comfortable for me. I think it also depends on what you do all day. If you are on your feet all of the time, iwb may be better. I work in an office and am sitting at my desk in front of a pc most of the day. The sp doesn't pull my pants down in the least.

I carry a spurless 2 1/4 barrel sp101 in a de santis nemesis holster,in right front pocket of my jeans at work all day. No problems.

It works for me...

I carry my Ruger around in the back pocket of my Wranglers. I forget it's there. I would say it is a person thing. Works for some and not for others.

Be careful with a J Frame Alloy in the back pocket. I actually bent the crane on one with my corpulence. It would fire, but not unlock. I sent it to Smith and they fixed it for free. I then switched to Ruger and have had not problems.

Good Luck,

Matt

I think the SP101 is too heavy for pocket carry. There are those who say they can do it but it's not for me. I carry my SP101 iwb. If I want to pocket carry, I go with my LCR or one of my J-frames.

I am not one of those who believe you must hide every hint of "printing" when CCWing, but the SP101, even in a pocket holster, looked like a large paperback book in my pocket, as well as being heavy.

If the pocket is big enough, but not too big, and the pants lose enough, but not too loose, pocket carry of an SP101 works for me.

Diamond Gusset Jeans, relaxed fit.

Wrangler Riatas, though mine are an older version. They may have changed. I can pocket-carry TWO SP101s in my Riatas.

Patagonia Lightweight Stand-up Shorts. (Not very "light" in weight; actually quite sturdy.)

My pocket rigs include Kramer horsehide, Desantis Nemesis, Uncle Mike's, and Galco leather. Some rigs work better with some pants than others, but I favor the Kramers whenever feasible.

I use pocket carry mostly for a secondary gun, NOT my primary, due to access issues if bent at the hip or waist. An OWB or IWB on the belt is much more accessible in a wider variety of circumstances.

IMHO, my SP 101 is to heavy for true pocket carry, but that is why I have my S&W 442. My SP is more of a belt holster gun and I carry the S&W in a coat pocket depending on the circumstance. MY true pocket gun is my KT .380.

"Thank you! How about this?"

The 638 is a great pocket carry weapon! It is my regular concealed carry piece, and I do mostly carry it in my pocket.

Nope, not for me..............

I love my SP101, .357. But, I carry every day, all day OSW, in a high-ride open top Galco pancake holster. The SP101 is too heavy for pocket carry for me. But, I'd never give up my Rugers.
My other regular CCW is a 3" GP100, .357. I carry it in a Simply Rugged, OSW Sourdough open top pancake holster.
I used to have a little Taurus model 85 .38 special. I CCW'd it the same way.
Easier access in OSW holster, for me.

I'd definitely prefer an Airweight like that over an SP101 for pocket carry, Reaper. The SP is doable if you 1)are a big enough guy, 2)are wearing pants with big pockets, and 3)have a very supportive belt. And Airweight is much more comfortable and will fit in more pants. I still think the SP is more comfortable to shoot, though.

i have got to wonder about the back pocket carry.......
-does the revo print through your pants?
-if your in a situation where you need it how quick can you get it out and fire 1 aimed rd?
-does the revo want to fall longways and make it awkward to retrieve and get a proper handle on it?

I've worn suspenders on my jeans for years - even before my waist was larger than my hips. It makes hip pocket carry of an SP101 something I don't notice until I sit down.

I like 145gr WW Silvertips, Mika's round bottom pocket holster and Hogue grips.

1858rem:

For me it is almost as fast as IWB and less obvious. I draw the gun by hooking my thumb around the grip on the body side and getting a full grip as I withdraw the gun.

In jeans at least with any decent holster the guns stays put.

With the right grips and a reasonable cover garment (vest, fleece, sweater or shirt) it doesn't print in a way that anyone has ever questioned.

In a vehicle, if I am driving, I keep the gun under a small towel on the seat at my right side next to my seat belt buckle.

The Mika's holster allows easy and discreet reholstering when I get out. I simply "palm" the gun, with the door open I turn my back towards the vehicle and slide it into the holster. I don't want mall security cameras seeing me holster a gun.

I figure that if a bad guy wants my wallet he expects me to reach to one of my hip pockets if I am wearing jeans.

It also allows me to discreetly move the gun from the pocket to "mexican" carry at the appendix position if I feel it might be a good idea..

I also allow the gun to cant as much as possible to the outside. This buries as much of the gun as possible in the pocket and gives a better draw angle. It also helps keep the end of the grip from printing.
