According to Ruger's website, the DA only SP101 weighs 1 pound, 9 ounces.

Is this a suitable weapon to carry in one's front pant's pocket? Or, with ammo, is it going to be too heavy?

Or would it be too massive?

thanx.

Very recently I picked up a spurless hammer DAO SP101 for carry. It works great IWB for me, but I would say it is too large for pocket carry. I've carried it in shorts with cargo pockets, but it really flopped around while walking. Weight was definitely a problem there. As always, your mileage may vary.

Good gun for big pockets

The SP101 is no "J-Frame". I have a Mod 60 pocketed right now, an SP101 on the dresser. I find the SP101 to work out great IWB sans holster, but not in my pockets (165 lbs, 5'10"). I do work with people (300 lbs, 6' 4") that could pocket a SP101.

I find the weight not to be the issue, but the size, grip length mainly, to keep it out of my pockets.

Go try one on.

I guess it depends on how big your pockets are. I have a pair of Old Navy cargo shorts that would easily hide a SP101. Dockers? No. Regular cut jeans? Forget about it.

A good gun - but not for pocket carry IMO . It's just to heavy for that.

I pocket carry a 13oz (dry) gun in my front pocket and that's enough. Stick with a light weight gun and you will be much happier for pocket carry.

I carried mine in a Mika pocket holster in certain pants and shorts. It was comfortable with my gun belt being worn and you could tell something thick was in there but it did not print. I used Butler Creek grips and they were great at concealing the grip in my pocket. The easiest carry was with a Universal revolver Clipdraw. The gun disappeared under any t-shirt and was hardly noticeable.

A different approach:

I carry my sp101 in my front pocket, but only in tighter fitting blue jeans with the grip sticking up out of the pocket, with a cover garment of some sort. I've actually sewn some of my pockets off short so the gun CAN'T go all the way in. I'm left handed, so gun is strong side left, and a speed strip resides in the change pocket on the right side.

With the weight of the gun, and the fact it wears rubber houge mono-grips I've found it too heavy and the rubber too snag prone to carry fully down in a big pocket.

Of course, YMMV.

That clip. Did you have to drill and tap your Ruger?

Could I mount one on the left side? (I shoot left-handed.)

No, it has a mounting plate that attaches via 3M tape and then it screws to that and removes for holster carry. A better description can be found at www.clipdraw.com
Unfortunately they don't make a left hand version because it would interfere with the cylinder swinging out.

Super Gun! However, I feel it's too heavy for pocket carry. A lot of the time I tote an all steel J frame in a Don Hume pocket holster and I think thats the upper limit for me............Essex

I carry mine in front right pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster all the time. In fact, that is the only way I carry it.
