SP101 3" for pocket carry

Unless you are talking about pants with cargo pockets, or a custom-constructed pocket that is extra deep, a 3" revolver is not pocket-carryable.

The SP101, while being a 5 shot "snubby", is a big and heavy gun. Loaded its about 2 lbs, and the frame itself is huge compared to other 5 shot revolvers.

The 2.25 or 3 inch SP101 is fantastic in the waistband, and vastly more shootable than a J-frame, but the SP101 is far from a pocket gun.

You could carry a Glock 19, in your pocket, as easily as the SP101...

steel snub nose's are to heavy and a 3" would be to big anyhow. my charter arms mag pug 21oz 2 1/4" barrel is really to big for my pockets anyways.

check overall dimensions and weight of your XD9SC and compare the Ruger specs
I dunno the answer, but if "pretty similar", you would have a quick feel for it

the SP101 is a hefty chunk of weight for pocket carry, any pocket

SP101 to heavy for pocket carry with any barrel length. I found that an S&W M60 (the older, lighter model in .38 special) was to heavy for pocket carry. Get a lightwieght for this mode of carry.

The 2.25" SP101 will stick up too far for many, if not most pockets, as it is. The 3.06" barrel is another 7/8" or so that will stick up farther. I found I had to shop carefully for pants when I regularly pocketed a 2.25" SP101. The weight of the gun itself had to be taken into consideration, too. I never have never minded the weight of the SP101.

I have now largely gotten away from pocket carry, except for around the house.

Weight and size-wise it's too heavy. Even the 2.25" one is too heavy and long. There's always someone with a steel belt and monster pockets who says, "Wait a minute, I pocket carry a Beretta 92...," but for the majority, the SP101 is a belt gun, not a pocket gun.

I think it would be too large & heavy. My 2 1/4" one is borderline; the weight's OK for a few days but will actually chafe my leg after that, and it's so large that about half of my pants won't completely hide them.

Thanks for the input! I got a 2.25" today.

Anyone carry their SP101 in a Smart Carry? (looking to carry in bib overalls)

the Ruger SP101 is a superb firearm, but like many have indicated, it's a heavy piece when loaded. A J frame is a better alternative for better concealment. Personally, I'm going to add a Kel-Tec single stack 9 to my collection for day to day carry...

I often carry a 3" SP101 in a holster OWB quite comfortably, but can't think it would be comfortable or practical for pocket carry.

since pictures are always a good thing..

That's my 3" SP101 next to a 5" 1911, 6" 629, and my Polish P64. The P64 is almost as big as you can get for my pockets. It is definitely not a small gun at all..

I have an IWB/OWB Shielded Holster for my 2.25" SP101. Alternatively, the Galco StowNGo works well, also at appendix carry.

It is too heavy and bulky for pocket carry. My Taurus 605 closely approaches pocket carry status; however, the Ruger LCR is a much finer choice.

You'd need a steel belt or suspenders with shoulder pads to keep your pants up. LOL

I have a 2.25" SP101 & it's heavy!

As others have opined, either barrel size is too heavy to pocket carry on a regular basis, imo. I see no drawback to toting the Ruger 101 in a pocket occasionally.
