I'm looking for a little input. I want to purchase a new handgun for mostly range use, but also for HD. I currently own a TZ-75 (clone of the CZ75), and this firearm was purchased used (well used); and I do not trust it. Occasional FTF, FTE, etc.

So I've been doing some research (visited a couple shops, searching the forums, etc). I've looked at the Glock 17, M&P 9, XD, Beretta 92, and the SR9 in person. I have not been able to find a P-01 in person yet. External safety (or decocker) is a preference, and that is what ruled out the Glock. The DA/SA is also a preference, but I could probably get used to the striker fired guns. XD didn't wow me especially with the grip safety.

I like how the SR9 feels in hand. Also benefits are the lesser cost, and easy availability. Whereas, I already have 3 mags for the TZ which should be interchangeable with the P-01 (saving some money). But I have not been able to find a P-01 (granted I've only tried the 2 closest shops so far).

Would I be making a mistake buying a P-01 (online) without handling it, or just test fire the SR9 and probably stick with that? I was really set on a SP-01 (or Phantom), but I like the mid-size semi-autos a little better.

I also have a 22/45 and 2 10/22's; so I don't have any issues with Rugers. :)

Thanks,

Josh

I have both of them, traded my G26 for the PO1 and it is the best 9MM I own right now. The SR9 is also a decent handgun but if one has to go it would be that one as of now. I also just bought a G17 and had the 3.5 LB trigger connector put in but still I think the PO1 for me is a shade better..

I think the lower cost may be the deciding factor. The CZ is in a completely different league than the Ruger. I have no experience shooting the SR-series (but am intrigued by the new compact), but I suspect the extra $~150 will get you a lot more pistol with the P01. It is up to you to determine the "value" of that $150 over the long run...

This is a pretty good deal on the P01 if you haven't seen it already:

Good luck!

the only thing about a CZ that would make me hesitate to reccomend one without having handled it first, is the trigger reach in DA mode. The grip itself I don't think I've ever heard of someone having an issue with, it is pretty much perfectly formed for the human hand.

Since you already have a CZ clone, I'm guessing you don't have stubby fingers that won't work with the CZ DA pull. I'd go P-01 over SR9 in a heartbeat.

I own an SR9 and I love it. The CZ is a proven winner. As much as I love Ruger and the SR9, I think the CZ is a better pistol. It's been around long enough to have all the kinks worked out. The main downsize is the weight, size and a substandard mag. cap.

If you haven't shot the CZ How do you know "the CZ is in a completely different league than the Ruger?"

I have both and think they are both good pistols, but the SR9 feels and works better for me but I would never sell the CZ either.

Kokapelli, I believe you misread my post. I have most definitely shot (and own) CZs. My observation was on apparent build quality, design, and overall reputation.

I think the grip on the SR9 is too long, the SR9C too short.

The CZ might take some more time to master, but I think well worth it.

No recalls, either.

Yes it was my mistake. I meant to say "if you haven't shot the SR9."

I had an SR9, good gun, but the grip was too small for me. Sold the SR9 to my neighbor when I bought a Stoeger Cougar 9mm. The Cougar fit my hand much better than the SR9. I shoot it more accurately and it has less recoil.

I haven't shot either of these guns but if you do decide on a SR9 I would encourage you to make sure you get the latest version. I don't know if Ruger would own up to it but I have seen posts at www.rugerforum.com that the newer models have D shaped magazine catches & there are minor changes in the trigger group to make trigger pull more consistent.

That was the very early production only which is what I have. I sent mine back at Rugers expense and when I got it back it had the trigger mod and also one of the new magazines.

CZ-P01.....No doubt!

I like Ruger. I own a 10/22 and just purchased one of their LCP's and my mother just purchased one of their LCR's based on my recommendation of the fabulous trigger on the LCR but I say the NATO approved CZ-P01 wins this battle handedly. ;)

GEt the CZ"D", I have one that will shoot with a CZ champioin(it 9mm also) but I have P-01's and the "D" model, both are great. and accurate. I"ve shot the Ruger and one had a good trigger and the other had crap for a trigger. I carry the CZ 75 "D". To break it in, I"Ve double actioned (dry fired) it 10,000 times and it's had about 6,000 round through it. I don't consister the pistol broken in. it could use a trigger job, but you can't do this your self(ok,ok, I tried. I'll do a colt, smithand wesson and a few others, and I did do a little to a CZ 75 b in 40 cal. but the "D"?? I couldn't get i;nto it.

Hello, i had a SR 9 for 8 months and the barrel peen on me after 300 rds, which Ruger did replace. The trigger never did get any better after 800 rds= it SUCK. I traded it in ,as soon as I found a dealer that would take it!
The all metal CZ's are so much better made, most people that shoot them say their very accurate. Ask about the CZ over in the Ruger fourm, I ones that have them ,have nothing but good thing's to say about them. Save up the extra money and get the CZ- you wont be sorry!!!!

I own an SR9 and i like it alot! CZ is a great gun but its too heavy to carry and more costly, u get what you pay for i rather have the SR9 andd 500 rounds for the price of a CZ with no bullets.

P01. I have it and the PCR. Held the Ruger once, then went home and confessed it to the CZ. She forgave me......

+1, Doc Glock.

To amplify my earlier point, I think the CZ is the better pistol. But I am on a mission in many aspects of my life to find the point of diminishing returns where I can be satisfied. I think the key to happiness in a market with lots of product choices, is to find the point where you would have to spend a LOT more money to get any additional meaningful personal benefit--regardless of what others think.

E.g., I would spend the ~$150 to get the CZ. Yet, although a Springer 1911 is likely a better pistol than an RIA for the ~$150 difference, I would stick with the RIA and not look back.

Bottom line: decide on your priorities, be confident in your decision, be happy, and move on. If that means Ruger for you, get it and be happy.

That's true........If you visit the Ruger forum and a thread comes up Ruger vs CZ.......CZ unanimously gets the nod.....To the great dismay of a very few die hard Ruger members, who complain about the majority of the members recommending the CZ and telling them they may be on the wrong forum.....LOL

I have stainless CZ-75B and CZ 75 SP-01 and they are the best 9mm guns I have ever owned. Now I have to be fair, I have not owned a BHP or Sig 9mm. I don't really want to based on my CZ's.

I have the similar PCR and am very pleased with it. I shall not attempt to make a comparison to the Ruger since I have no experience with it.

When the gun is ready for use (i.e., round chambered and the hammer lowered on it by use of the decocking lever), the hammer starts its travel from about one-third cock, reducing the trigger stroke over the full DA pull of a manual safety model. That might be worthy of consideration.

 The P-01/PCR is a compact gun, about the size and weight of a SIG P228 (in fact they will fit in many of the same holsters), and its standard mag capacity is 14 rounds.

There are a lot of CZ fans over at rugerforum.com. There is also a lot of 1911 love. The truth is pretty much what Doc Glock said though. It is your money & you will be the one that has to live with your decision.
