Ruger SR9 First Range Report

Perhaps. Like I said, I only have 75 rounds through the gun (and thus through the mags). They are both loaded to capacity at this time, and I plan to keep them that way for a while to see if they loosen up any.

Awesome, Ive been waiting on a report for the SR9. Thanks so much for sharing. I really would like to fire one. Im going to head to my local Bass ProShop Outdoor World this weekend and see if they have one I can play with. How do you feel about being used for HD?

Fondled one yesterday myself and was pretty impressed by the size of the gun, especially seeing how it holds 17+1 rounds.

The trigger on the one I held was pretty heavy and real gritty, but that could have been just this gun. Otherwise I am sure it would smooth out over time.

They were priced at $529 plus sales tax, which makes them $30 more than a Glock 9mm. For that price I personally would pass.

wow i hope this is because they are new and all that, i was under the impression that they were gonna be at a much lower price point. if it stays that high i will rent one but i will pass on buying one.

Could just be my dealer. Not a lot of competition around my parts.

Field stripping the gun took all of five minutes

Most people can detail strip a Glock in five minutes.

I handled one at the gunshow on Saturday. Didn't fit me and I really don't want another Ruger handgun, so I didn't pay it any more attention.

Boarhunter - Thanks for the reports. I'm very interested & will also be following your results.

Any prices coming out of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area yet ?

thanks for the review, this one has made it to my list of items for my next purchase

Held one today, loved the feel...lightest 17 rd 9mm on the market for sure. The grip angle is perfect and the feel is wonderful. Its very thin and tight.

I now have 200 rounds through the gun and can add a few additional comments regarding the new Ruger SR-9.

First, the magazines are loosening up just a bit...I can now get 7 rounds in the 17-round magazine before resorting to the mag loader! Making progress.

Second, out of the box, the gun was shooting approximately 1 inch low at 10 yards (and a hair to the left). I left the windage "as is," but easily corrected the elevation point of impact with a screwdriver and 4 or 5 rounds downrange. The rear adjustable sight worked just fine.

Third, at some point in my shooting (at about the 150th round downrange), the slide occasionally failed to lock back on an empty magazine. I am not going to get too concerned about the issue unless it continues. I have been shooting the mags as they came, without any cleaning or lubrication, and that may be part of the problem.

Fourth, the mag release button got stiff and difficult to use between range sessions. It loosened up during the last session, so I plan to keep an eye on that as well.

As for the shooting, I remain very satisfied with the gun's accuracy and performance.

For your information.

Price will come down once they aren't so shiny and new. Same as anything new, most dealers are going to charge retail (or more) to those who must have the latest toy.

Once sales drop off, I'm guessing it will be closer to the $400 mark.

I agree with Anna's Dad, but Larry's Pistol in Huntsville is already selling them for $399 on promotional pre-order (though I do not know what the price might ultimately be when the guns actually get on the market).

The one I got was priced at $499, because it included a special edition CRKT tactical knife, a fancier box, and the gun was first production (i.e., low serial number). Larry's sold all 4 of these it got on the first day/only day of the promotion when the Ruger CEO spent the day in the store.

This is possibly the $529 gun my dealer had, he mentioned something about a knife and the fact that he had to order 4 guns.

Boarhunter,

I made my way down to our toy store earlier today and handled the SR9.

Some of my initial impressions, admittedly, without shooting.

Aesthetically, this is one of the best looking Ruger autoloaders that I've seen. The design is sleek and it really fit my hand.

I was impressed with the trigger while dry firing. It had some creep, but nothing to get fired up about.

I did not like the magazine release on the one they had on display. The gun looked very dirty, so I don't know if this was one they had been firing on the range or not. It said "property of Ruger" on it or something like that. The mag release wasn't really stiff. It just felt like it was binding at a certain point (possibly a different problem from what you described). It was certainly not smooth.

The other thing I didn't like about it was the thumb safety. Admittedly, I'm spoiled by the thumb safety on the 1911. It's easy for me to swipe the thumb safety on and off on the 1911. The SR9 really minimizes the size of the safety and it made it difficult for me to swipe on and off without placing my thumb directly on it. Basically, it's small.

Despite these two "drawbacks," I would still consider the SR9 if it had ambidextrous controls. However I didn't see how the slide lock, magazine release, or the thumb safety could be switched for a lefty.

So, for now, it looks like I'm going to have to pass on the SR9. Looks like a real nice gun though.

Tydephan,

Actually, the gun's manual safety and mag release are ambidextrous...they are just real small and somewhat difficult to see! (I pulled mine out of my desk drawer just to make sure my memory was not playing tricks on me!) The slide release is not ambidextrous, as you mentioned, located only on the left side.

Your description of the mag release operation is better than mine. I called it "stiff;" your description that it appears to be binding is more accurate.

Anyway, I plan to shoot it in the next IDPA match and see how it performs (or I perform with it) under a little pressure.

And I am most anxious to see how it feels and shoots when I have a couple of thousand rounds through it.

Boarhunter,

Wow, that could be an all-time new record for how quickly I've forgotten something.

I sure thought I remembered not seeing the thumb safety on the other side, but you are correct. Is the magazine release swappable (configured for either/or) or does it actuate from both sides?

Nice pistol. I may have to come watch you next match to see how you do (and add a little more pressure!)

I've talked to pops about coming too. Hopefully he'll buy into it. He'll have to blow the dust out of his G22. :D

Actuates from both sides, tydephan.

I spoke to the ol' man this afternoon, and I think he is now a "lover" and not a "fighter!" I think it came with giving up red meat.

Glock Holsters for SR 9

I have a Done Hume IWB holster made for the glock 17 that fits the SR 9 just fine and is now what I use to carry. I also tried a DeSantos OWB paddle holster that also worked.

As far as the trigger pull, I put 200 rounds of 115 grain winchester through it on Saturday. It was initially a little rough but after some more dry firing (with the mag in) I noticed an improvement. Dry firing also helped me improve my familiarity with the external safety and can now engage and disengage it with a quick flip of the thumb. The mag releas is a little more challenging to do with one hand but I found that it is less awkward now after some practice.

I posted my orginal range report on the Ruger Forum. net

Boarhunter-Thank You for the posts & congrats on the purchase-I'll be watching for further posts. I am interested in this pistol but probably can't consider another purchase till spring.

The promo pics make it look sleek and sexy, but real deal pics by new onwers how it to be fugly and and generally Rugerish.

Some people are not thrilled with the triggers, either.

I stick to buying CZs:)

Update:

Approaching 400 rounds through the SR-9, and I am becoming happier with the gun with each additional round.

I can now get 17 rounds into the mags without the use of the included mag loader. I attribute the improvement to two things...relaxing springs and an appreciation and understanding of a "quirk" in the mags.

There is a hole or two in the front of the magazine, and long ball bullets will snag on the hole as it is being charged, if you do not keep the cartridges settled back in the mag and if you do not load each round by pressing down on the nose of the last loaded cartridge before adding the next. Follow those procedures (or use hollow point ammo...the SR-9 feeds those perfectly, by the way) in a mag that has been fully charged a week or so, and you should have no problems.

The mag release has smoothed up and is no a problem

I still would prefer the safety be built up and reshaped to resemble the 1911 safety so you can rest your thumb on it while shooting.

For your information.
