Ruger SR9 First Range Report

They were priced at $529 plus sales tax, which makes them $30 more than a Glock 9mm. For that price I personally would pass.

I heard one of our local range/shops had one so I went over and took a gander during my lunch break today. I hope they really like it since it will probably be a while before someone forks over the $625 they were asking for it.

Well, I took the plunge.

I bought one on auction for $450 + $15 shipping. Said and done I should have it in my paws for about $480-485 depending on the transfer fee.

Should have it in a week or so!

Excellent, Anna's Dad. Let us know what you think after a few rounds downrange.

I have approximately 500 rounds through mine so far, and I think I like it better with every passing shot.

Now, the SR-9 will never have the sex appeal of my Kimber Aegis Custom or my Springfield EMP, but as a lightweight hi-cap carry gun...it is ok in my book.

Remember this as well: to my knowledge, the first guns available to dealers were the "limited edition" low-serial number guns that came with a CRKT tactical knife. Regular production guns (without the knife) ought to be priced significantly lower (if Larry's Pistol in Huntsville is any indication, the production guns ought to run about $100 less...his 4 limited edition guns ran $499, but his pre-order sale of production guns was $399). FYI.

Glock Holsters

Glock 17 holsters do not fit, nor do any other locally available Glock holsters.

I have a Don Hume IWB leather hoster for a full sized glock and it fits perfectly. I also tried but did not buy a OWB DeSantis holster for a Glock 17 that also worked.

The SR9 fits snuggly. As you see from the pic, it does not cover either the external safety or the mag release which do not seem to effect the fit.

Jumpin4Joy,

I am glad to see some of the Glock 17 leather holsters work with the SR-9; all I had available to test at the stores were the plastic holsters, and they obviously did not have room for "give" to accommodate differences between the guns.

Ps: If anyone finds a holster-maker making holsters specifically for the SR-9, share the information, please.

We used to buy a lot of guns from Larrys. I guess his son has it now...they just don't seem polite or helpful anymore. I know they had some problems/incidents there in the last year...but even before that they got to where they'd just be flat out rude like they where doing YOU a favor waiting on you. I go up there a few times a year and look...I just order it when I get back. A good example of how "gunshop God-itis" (a bad attitude) can ruin a business. They do a good volume still...but they used to do a good business to. I don't even shoot up there anymore.

Wholesaler called me the other day...I think he said they were going for like $360-ish or somewher around there...that was the biggest Ruger wholesaler in the country. So it will likely be around $400-$419 most good shops (once the "new model-itis" drops off)...which is inline with their other stuff. I don't see what all the fuss is about...it's not "B&D Drill" bulky like most of their other autos...if it's as reliable it should be popular for them. The Steyr m9 wholesales for like $340...seems like a better deal to me. But then it's an import....some people dislike that.

That's the price tag I was hoping to see today.

If you're OK buying from an auction, there were others at $450 + $20 (only $5 more than I paid) on gunbroker.com.

These are all the first production run guns w/ the knife. As far as I know that's all that are currently available but I could be wrong!

jonboynumba1,

Larry is still running the shop.

I hate to hear that you have had some bad experiences. I bought my first gun from him 32 years ago and most every gun I have owned since that time, all without any problems or dissatisfaction. It is home away from home for me. But I guess everyone is different. That is what makes life interesting.

I dry fired it in the store a couple weeks ago. The trigger was horrible. I felt like I was pulling the trigger on a cheap airsoft gun. It was comfortable to hold, looked nice, but I don't think I could get past that trigger.

i got mine yesterday and we measured the trigger, the averages that we got was 6.5lbs to 7lbs new out of the box..i haven't shot mine yet just cleaned it..

I did something with my Ruger SR-9 that may be a first for this particular model...I killed a 200-250 pound Russian Boar with it this past Saturday. I used Extreme Shock EPR 9mm ammo, and it worked just fine. This letter I sent to Extreme Shock this morning tells the story.... My SR-9 will go with me to the grave, I like it that much!

Guys:

Your ammo works even better than promoted, and for that I am most impressed and most appreciative.

This past weekend, I was at Caryonah Hunting Lodge in Crossville, Tennessee, a place I go fairly often, with plans to take a Russian Boar with a Magnum Research .45/70 BFR. The gun/cartridge combo is a proven hog-killer and a pleasure to shoot. But I was also packing an early-production 9mm Ruger SR-9 handgun, one I carry for protection purposes and often shoot in local IDPA competition.

Well, I am always interested in making the hunt more "exciting," so when the guide, Matt, pulled a pocket-full of your 9 mm rounds out and suggested I give them a try, I immediately jumped on it (with a little encouragement from my buddies)! I stuffed your ammo into my Ruger and headed off to slay a hog. (Confession: I did take the BFR with me, just in case….).

To make a very long and interesting story short, on Saturday afternoon I put a single round of your 9 mm EPR into the side (just behind the shoulder) of an old warrior hog at 25 yards or thereabouts, and sent him to hog heaven! The hog was approximately 200-250 pounds, and our initial inspection suggested that he had suffered a heart attack rather than death by gunshot. We looked and looked and looked for the entry wound, and all we could find was what appeared to be a very small puncture wound where the round would have entered. Surely, that could not have killed the hog. But when we field dressed it, the internal trauma was a sight to see. The EPR created massive damage to the hog's internal organs without exiting. We never found the bullet itself. But it was clear it had done its job.

I am a believer. Although your 9 mm EPR rounds did not make as big an exterior mess as would the .45/70, it kills just as effectively.

Keep up the good work.

I picked up my SR9 a few weeks ago and have about 200 rounds through it. The first magazine through the gun shot the X-ring out of a reduced B27 target at 15 yards off hand. I'm not that great a shot, but the gun made me look good that day.

I found that a Don Hume JIT holster made for Ruger's P95 carries the SR9 quite nicely.

My only complaint about this gun, and it's a minor one, is the loaded-chamber indicator. This thing sticks up much further than I care for, but it doesn't get in the way of shooting. I'm thinking about filing down a little of it so that it still does what it's supposed to, but only sticks up about half as much. There's a thread over at the Ruger forum where a guy had totally removed his, and it looks like it would be a simple procedure to file a little off the front. Totally removing it does not look to be a viable option, though...

In any case, this is one sweet-shooting, easy-carrying gun, and with 18 rounds of 9mm, I feel quite well protected.

Do post some photos in this thread if you file it down- I'll do it if someone else tries it first... :)

I picked up mine brand new for $389 and I really love it!

Glock 17 holsters do not fit, nor do any other locally available Glock holsters. Nor have I been able to find today any other holster, other than the "cloth and sponge pouches," that would fit the SR-9.... I will keep looking and invite input from others having more success.

I contacted Comp-Tac after I bought mine in December and asked them if they were going to produce a holster for the SR9. They said they planned have one out within six months.

Right now I have mine in a Galco Yaqui holster and it works pretty well, fits nice and snug and I carry it every day as my ccw and have no problems. Still I think when the Comp-Tac one comes out I'll be getting one of those.
