So the wife saw a SRH years ago and said she wanted one. So I just ran across a 7.5" SRH stainless in 44mag. The gun would mostly be used for targets. The gun looks like it has been used very little from what I can tell. I have a few questions for the knowledgeable people on here. (Currently own a GP-100 and a few other pistols)
1. Is there anything I need to be looking at specifically to verify the little use of the gun?
2. Is there any reason to not get the 44 mag vice larger?
The gun is listed at $800 but believe I may be able to get for $700. It has the scope rings in the original case. When I operate the hammer and trigger, it is smooth and not gritty.
Thanks for your input.

Check out the revolver sticky. Generally look at the cylinder turn ring, see how faint or obvious it is. Check for scuffs or scratches on the stainless gun, cylinder burn marks. If it passes the revolver checkout method than go for it just be warned that .44 mag is not 9mm, for 30 bucks I can buy 200 rds of 9mm it will take me over 30 to find 50 in .44. so reload or expect money to be an issue.

Checking the serial number data base at Ruger will tell you when the gun was made. Many hunting guns tend to spend
most of their life in the gun case.

If you can get it with the rings for 700 in the trigger and Hammer work well and anything like smoothly on a big Ruger I would buy it.
Ditto on what was said above.
It doesn't matter at all if the gun is older if it wasn't used much look for grit and build up and tarnish marks around the front of the cylinder.
I would say this not to be sexist but has your wife ever shot any 44 Magnum without a ported barrel? She may be biting off more than she can chew
This is really a hunting gun I wouldn't consider this a Target gun

The SRH is overbuilt even for 44 mag so outside of abuse it should be fine even if it’s had some use. Mine is quite accurate, and light loaded hand loads are very fun since it has some heft to it. Mine usually sees full power loads since I use it for hunting, but a little titegroup and a 240 grain semiwadcutter makes for some enjoyable target shooting.

I'd still starter on 357 and you could always go down to 38 Special try GP100 if she lights Super Redhawk.
You can pick up a good GP100 for under $500
I don't think there's much that somebody could do to hurt a Super Redhawk 4 GP100 short of intentional bending.
See if she's still interested in it and have her hold the gun they are damn heavy which reduces recoil but I think 357 is a way better way to go

Do you reload? If so you can find so much reload info for a 44 mag from bunny farts that a young teen can handle all the way up to +p+ buffalo bore that have a little more stank on em. The SRH is my favorite gun period right now.

I’m not so concerned about her being able to control it as I am that she has probably changed her mind about whether she wants one a few hundred times in the years since she first saw the SRH.

Obviously check the gun for abuse, neglect or damage - as evangelist cowboy said, look at the sticky. That being said if it is worn out or harmed in some way just find the local guy with the mangled or missing hand and ask him how he managed it;). Tough to do anything to a SRH, if theres no forcing cone wear/damage and minimal flame cutting on the top strap im sure the gun is just fine.
