Decided to go the range Saturday morning and trying to save some
gas, my wife and I decided to lump a few errands together along
with the trip to the range
So, rather than leaving 4 pistols in their bags in the car, I put them
in a cloth bag and took them into the store with us (walmart)
As we shopped around, I left the cart for the briefest moment….
maybe 15 seconds or so….I returned to where the cart was….
AND IT WASN’T THERE!!!! I began to look for my wife, thinking
that maybe she had grabbed the cart, knowing what the bag contained.
I found her….without the cart….and she knew as soon as I asked her:
Where is the cart????? I started running up and down the aisles of
the store, freaking out big time. It had only been a very few moments
but that damn cart was no where to be found. Only the worse possible
scenario was being imagined through my mind.
After what seemed to be an eternity, I found a guy pushing our
cart, with some items in it, including 3 boxes of federal 22lr ammo
which I had put in earlier (more on this aspect of the story later)
I whooshed up to the guy and said as calmly as possible: uh…I think
you have my cart……the look on his face was one of complete embarrassment, and he apologized all over himself. I was so relieved that the bag was still there with the 4 pistols in it. I smiled and said: thanks and tried not to show how utterly relieved I was. My heart was pounding like crazy.
I don’t think he had a clue as to the contents of the bag, although he had
to have seen the ammo. I am just lucky that I didn’t lose those guns!
Needless to say, I learned my lesson and will never let that happen again!!!
The rest of the story: I usually pay for my ammo right at the sports counter
because I know that the guys there are more experienced with the process
(in ny state, you have to show your pistol permit when you buy “hand gun”
ammo, although since there are some cartridges that work for both long guns
and hand guns, so you could get away with not showing it depending on
who is checking you out)
So, I knew that I was running the risk of having some clueless cashier
ask me questions….(the cash register prompts them to ask the questions…
I know this….) so she asked: is it for a pistol or a rifle? I told her that
it was for a long gun (so I didn’t have to take out the pistol permit) and
she smiled and looked at me and said: how do you know that you aren’t
lying????? I smiled back and said: you don’t! She continued to ring
me up, even though I could tell she wasn’t very happy with that answer.
Anyway…no more rule four violations….I got off easy and lucky!
And lesson learned! Maybe I’ll just stay in the car next time.
(yes....i am an idiot!)
