Decided to go the range Saturday morning and trying to save some
gas, my wife and I decided to lump a few errands together along
with the trip to the range

So, rather than leaving 4 pistols in their bags in the car, I put them
in a cloth bag and took them into the store with us (walmart)

As we shopped around, I left the cart for the briefest moment….
maybe 15 seconds or so….I returned to where the cart was….
AND IT WASN’T THERE!!!! I began to look for my wife, thinking
that maybe she had grabbed the cart, knowing what the bag contained.

I found her….without the cart….and she knew as soon as I asked her:
Where is the cart????? I started running up and down the aisles of
the store, freaking out big time. It had only been a very few moments
but that damn cart was no where to be found. Only the worse possible
scenario was being imagined through my mind.

After what seemed to be an eternity, I found a guy pushing our
cart, with some items in it, including 3 boxes of federal 22lr ammo
which I had put in earlier (more on this aspect of the story later)

I whooshed up to the guy and said as calmly as possible: uh…I think
you have my cart……the look on his face was one of complete embarrassment, and he apologized all over himself. I was so relieved that the bag was still there with the 4 pistols in it. I smiled and said: thanks and tried not to show how utterly relieved I was. My heart was pounding like crazy.

I don’t think he had a clue as to the contents of the bag, although he had
to have seen the ammo. I am just lucky that I didn’t lose those guns!
Needless to say, I learned my lesson and will never let that happen again!!!

The rest of the story: I usually pay for my ammo right at the sports counter
because I know that the guys there are more experienced with the process
(in ny state, you have to show your pistol permit when you buy “hand gun”
ammo, although since there are some cartridges that work for both long guns
and hand guns, so you could get away with not showing it depending on
who is checking you out)

So, I knew that I was running the risk of having some clueless cashier
ask me questions….(the cash register prompts them to ask the questions…
I know this….) so she asked: is it for a pistol or a rifle? I told her that
it was for a long gun (so I didn’t have to take out the pistol permit) and
she smiled and looked at me and said: how do you know that you aren’t
lying????? I smiled back and said: you don’t! She continued to ring
me up, even though I could tell she wasn’t very happy with that answer.

Anyway…no more rule four violations….I got off easy and lucky!
And lesson learned! Maybe I’ll just stay in the car next time.
(yes....i am an idiot!)

When they ask me - rifle or pistol? when I'm buying .45 auto I always tell them submachine gun. gets a few odd looks but never been refused. :)

At every Walmart I go to there is a person at the front that has to put a little tag on bags and boxes that are brought back into the store.
How did you get around that?

Hair-raising tale, but how is it a violation of rule #4? "Always be sure of your target and what lies behind it?"

Or is this from a different set...?

just walked in with it
no one even looked at me or anything

i have done it before with no one questioning me

and....there was a greeter there too....

oops...maintain control of your weapon at all times
(maybe that's rule five?)

anyway....a screw up narrowly averted.....

dont know about rule number 4 but i sure as hell would never do that. i cant imagine if a walmart security guard or someone else asked me what i had in my bag. That could lead you into a whole bunch of answering that you dont want to deal with.not too smart.

Actually, Rule .9 (so its above rule 1) is "Never leave your gun unattended in a public place. It WILL walk away!!!"

That was close:

Here at the Walmart in Tucson they never ask me what weapon I am buying ammo for and I have bought for 9MM, .38, and 357?

Lesson learned, and like you said that won't happen again.

Good luck!

walmart is one of the few chain stores that dont care when you OC... ive done it lots... only had a problem once, a shift manager freaked out and claimed that there were no guns allowed in the store... to which i politely pointed at the display rack of rifles and said "oh really?"

he still threw a fit, so i had him call the store manager... long story short, walmart doesn't have any prohibition against weapons in their stores... and the manager is a shooting buddy of my uncle... so things worked well

I carry my backpack EVERYWHERE, have never EVER (yet) to have a tag/sticker/whatever put on it nor been ask to leave it anywhere, IF I am, I'll leave the store....that pack ain't staying anywhere w/o me!

So a shopping cart with (some sort of) a cloth bag containing 4 handguns is left unattended but the cashier who is asking asking questions that are prompted by the cash register is clueless.

Uhhh, OK.

Just last weekend I bought a 100 round plastic case of CCI minimag .22lr at Walmart. The guy at the sporting goods counter put it in a very small ultra thin plastic bag that I casually placed in the shopping cart. As I went over to the DVD section I heard a plastic crash followed by the sound of 100 .22lr rolling all over the place.

That was not fun to scoop up but I have all 100 accounted for.

I didn't get carded last time I bought ammo, even though I was with my "gang banger" friend, and I get carded for a pack of gum practically. Oh the joys of having a baby face ;)

I have no clue as to Wally World's active security measures, but in some other department stores I've been in, as soon as you walked in the door with a backpack, or any other kind of bag, a nice man in a back office would have a camera turned on to you, and would be following you around with it.

I am confused by the use of Rule Four. This is the rule about IDing your target and what is beyond it before you shoot. You definitely violated the rule about leaving a firearm accessible to unauthorized persons (whichever number that is).

Oh man, what if the guy had been anti-gun? What if he had taken those guns home and tried them out, and converted his views when he discovered just how much fun owning a gun can be? You might have changed this man's life by letting him keep the cart!

Oh, wait, I'm dreaming on my lunch break. Back to work.

I love it when they ask me if what I'm buying is for a rifle or a pistol. The last time I had a 100 ct. box of .380 ACP and a 50 ct. box of .45 GAP. The guy at the sports counter asked me what it was for and I said rifle. He said they don't make rifles in this caliber.

I bluffed and said "I'd be happy to bring them in from the car and show them to you!" knowing full well that would be frowned upon.

Took them out of the car, then lost them in the store.....

Out of the frying pan, into the fire, eh?

I reccommend keeping all firearms completely away from the stove in the first place.

WHEW!

Unless baking out a cosmolined up stock!

Glad it all worked out.

Not sure what rule 4 you mention?

Carry your concealed into Walmart here in deep south Texas and it could cost you 10 years plus a hefty fine.

Maybe I missed something. Why exactly did you decide carrying a bag of guns around a store was a good idea in the first place? Once you concluded hauling a bag of guns into Wally-world was a great idea, why did you walk off on them? Can you imagine the crap-storm you would have caused with a cart of guns and ammo if they would have stopped you or called the cops?

I hate to be Mr. Obvious, but you could have caused an amazing amount of trouble.
