Has anyone ever seen revolvers or pistols rust on the inside? Ever needed to replace parts, springs etc. because of internal rust?

Bill

My neighbor had a blue Charter Arms Bulldog that had the action rusted so bad it could not be cocked.

I soaked it in penetrating oil for a couple of days until the action loosened up. Then I detail stripped it and cleaned up the internals. It had some substantial internal pitting, but it would at least function again.

He has since moved, so I don't know what shape it may be in now.

Yes , these were severe circumstances tho.

Many years ago my complex flooded -flash flood- and those of us on first floor left in water above our knees...in a hurry. Some hours passed before we could return, neighbor forgot about a revolver. Took awhile for gunsmith to soak, but I don't believe any parts had to be replaced, just remove rust, polish up, re blue.

Fire...this is a bad dealie. I had customers over the years that suffered fire damage, the water and chemicals wreaked havoc on everything as you can imagine. Those that actually became "heated" were a loss. Most of the water / chemical damaged were able to be restored.

One fellow was caught on a lake during a storm. He kept his nice dress watch and gun from rusting by tossing in a big zip-lock bag full of water, and into the livewell until he finally made it to safety.

No oxygen meant no rust...just required both being taken apart "clean ,oil and adjust".

When I was 16 or so my buddy stole a Sterling 22 outa his dads sock drawer. It was rusted so bad interanlly the slide only moved about a quater of and inch. the outside was beat up but not very rusty. Some penatrating oil and elbow grease saved it.

A pair of TO plain clothes cops came into the store I worked in long ago. One wanted to change grips. The other decided he liked the feel of them and decided to buy a set too. His service revolver was rusted shut.
