You cannot equate yesterdays prices to today's market. Back in 1988 or so I bought two 1948 vintage K22 Masterpieces at an auction for $275. I sold one of them to a friend of mine for $250 so I guess you could say that I bought one for $25.

Two weeks ago I picked up another '48 K22, but I had to shell out seven bills for it. The first one came with the original box, sight adjustment tool and "Helpful Hints" brochure, the second was just the gun. If I waited for another deal like the first one, I would be waiting forever. As it is, I feel I paid a fair price for the newest one.

Thanks red rick, those are beauties highpower. What you paid seems to be the going rate these days. I keep wanting a model 14 to go with my 17, saw a pair at local shop yesterday in superb condition and indeed were $750.

I just sold a 1960 Model 17 for $450, it had lots of bluing wear and Hogue grips.

I really wanted a Model 17 after shooting a buddy's but was discouraged when I looked at buying one for myself. It didn't help that I was looking for a nickel plated one either (very rare and expensive). I had a Model 617 4" come into the shop on consignment for $600 and jumped on it without batting an eye. I have never regretted purchasing it.

I would rather have a 617 . Most that I have seen are going for more than the 17's . At $600 dollars I would have jumped on it too .

I picked up my 17 today . I am cleaning it tonight . I will post a picture tomorrow , when the light is better ( I don't take good pictures , so I need some daylight ) .

Question , mine has the target stocks and not the magna stocks . It does not have the target trigger or hammer . Do you think the stocks were changed ? It's a 1984 , 17-4 I was told .

If it's near mint as described, then $650 was a good price. The main thing is, you've got one of the best .22 revolvers ever made. Shoot it as much as you want, keep it clean, and it will hold its value. Make some good memories and hand it down in 40 years.

17-4 Pictures

Well here it is .

I like the look of the target stocks , but I am going to replace them with the magna grips .

My 17-5 also has target stocks, but also has the target hammer, trigger, and a thicker barrel.

If you ever want to part with those grips, please let me know.

Howdy

I dunno how Model 17-4s were shipping, my 17-3 came with Magna grips on it.

The style of target stocks with the speed loader cut out that are on your Model 17 first started appearing in 1981. One thing you could do is remove the stocks and look to see if they have the serial number of the gun stamped or pencil numbered on them. Look on the underside, usually of the right grip. A sure sign that the stocks left the factory with the gun.

I had them off last night while cleaning and I didn't see any numbers on them . They fit the gun perfect though , but just not my hand .

You got a winner there. You grand-kids kids will enjoy that one.
Your gun has what are commonly called "speed loader cut out targets".
Target grips are seldom numbered, as early on, they were an optional item.

Now you need to find a matching K-38/model 14.

I have a 1947 K22 just like that including the box.
They are beautiful revolvers and the most accurate
22 handgun that I own including my Ruger MKII competition
slab side pistol and that is saying something.

I wanted a 6" 617 so that I could get my teenage Son involved in shooting with what I consider to be the best new .22LR revolver available. I'll transfer it over to Him when He's old enough. So I ordered one back on Dec. 9th from the only LGS who would accept an order for this gun. It's now April 1st and my Boy's birthday is this Friday the 3rd, and the LGS owner tells me I will get my gun eventually, so I'm still waiting for it to come in. This explains what is driving the value of the older 17's, and new or used 617's are just nowhere to be had! I had a 4" 617 which I traded straight up last year for a 627, and it was a good deal for me. But I thought it would be easier than this to get a replacement 617!

Bottom line, pay what you have to get a good example of a 17 or a 617, and then hold on to it, and will it to your kids or grandkids!
