I'm in the market for a 1911/1911 clone and looked at a S&W 1911. It has a scandium frame and is super lightweight and good looking. Only I flipped it over and on the frame in white letters is a warning about the gun being able to fire with the magazine removed.

I really hate these safety features. Locks, warnings, et al.

I just purchased a new 5" 1911PD last week. If you had asked me before that, I would have always reccomended a Springfield for a 1911. I decided to try this lightweight pistol for a CCW since I had read lots of good reports on Smiths. Let me tell you, Smith makes some great 1911s. The fit and finish of my PD are every bit as good as the Springer TRP Operator I had to trade. This is the first Smith 1911 I have owned, but it sure won't be the last. Don't let a little print on the frame steer you away from one of the best lightweight 1911s on the market. Plus, if you buy one before June 30, Smith has a promo going where you can get two free Wilson 47 mags. Makes a good deal even better,IMHO. Good luck.

I can overlook the warnings, the billboard and just about anything else on a pistol that shoots as good and is a reliable as my S&W1911.

Worth some concideration is the Ruger P345 1911 action. I LOVE MINE. Much cheaper than a "full blown" 1911, but man that baby is sweet. I have a 229 Sig, but the Ruger is much nicer to shoot.

For goodness sake... are you going to spam every 1911 topic now?

It is pretty hard to avoid them on newer 1911s by anybody, except for the expensive ones. Ironic that you need to spend money to NOT get an annoying feature.

Colts and Kimbers "only" have a firing pin block, and no extra external locks or "safety warning" markings. Springfield Armory guns don't have a firing pin block, but do have the ILS thing.

Alternately, you could have the S&W refinished to remove the annoying markings.

The smith is nice i have a 1911sc but after treatment by smith i wont buy another... To sum it up i called about having a Ambi safty installed Guy told me get the gun they put it on for free call back.... So i got it called back ask to talk to him and hes gone so i go though what i want ..

150 installled i said that nuts and asked why they would make a defensive pistol without a ambi safety then the smith guy asks me why i bought a pistol without a ambi safty :banghead: ... So i just told him that cool last smith ill buy Customer Service sucks ill buy someone elses Pistol

tc300, I had a little trouble following what you're trying to say, but I think you're upset that your gun didn't have an ambi safety when you bought it and Smith won't install one for free so their customer service is poor? If I'm right, you've lost me there.

mrhuckins, glad you like your 345 so much, but if you keep calling it a 1911, you are going to keep taking shots. BTW, maybe you can go over to the 1911forum and discuss your 345 on the Ruger boards! :what:

My goodness Glocker, I would NEVER call my Ruger P345 handgun a 1911! Not after I made that missteak the first time. I was corrected that it only has a 1911 action, and that is how I refer to it. Ruger P345 with 1911 action.

No i knew it didnt have one when i bought it what im upset about is they cant tell ya one solid thing they keep changing .. and when i got mad with customer service is when the guy go crappy with me i was willing to pay to have it dont just not there outrageous price of 150$ for a MIM thumb safety ...

After the guy got crappy i figure hey i paid 700$ for it at least be decent to me so screwum i wont buy another smith almost didnt this time .. Im taking it to local guy who is a good 1911 smith and he doenst want that much to put in a ed brown safety

Also i notice i forgot to say ...They told me they would put it in for free if i bought the gun then told me 150$ everyone has to admit that poor service illgo back to springer or kimber next time .

Im just relating my exp with there service since that seem to be a big concern for people now adays it was for me but i heard how great they are well im saying to me they were useless its my .02

Its really hard for me to express how much of a Jerk this guy was on the phone and how rude like i was taking away from his tv time becuse i called

You are just determined to make yourself look ignorant, aren't you? If you go around and talk to real people who know about guns about how you own a "Ruger P345 with 1911 action," they are going to think you are mentally retarded. It will be quite embarassing for you if you were to do such a thing.

Hey, it's your life. If you want to make yourself look really ignorant, go for it. But you might as well say you own a Subaru Outback with Model-T action.

:neener:

I noticed you have crapped on every 1911 thread you can find about your Ruger having a "1911 action," too. It has gotten quite silly.

Actually, he's missed a couple of them, here and there. Understandably, some 1911 threads will be hard for a troll to spot by title.

BTW, I couldn't help but notice this one has an external extractor. Can it have an external and still be a true 1911?

My guess Smith is looking to decrease its liability and will use the extractor as a loaded chamber indicator.

it has a loaded chamber cut out in top of barrel ... The extracter is still flush with slide when loaded i checked mine sitting here on table to be sure

It's a

Handgun, not a contract. Did you buy it to read or shoot?
S&W service is one of the best, your personal preferences aren't service issues. Attitudes are adjustable, try it.
Ruger P345 is the nearest to a really nice carry piece they have to date, still not a 1911 though.
Writings and stampings on guns today, to satistfy the lawyer types is an sorry state, but look where suits can go and the harm done, due to a lack of such. Having owned, shot and carry the S&W 1911's, can't see where a minor irritant, such as described has any bearing on function.

You're right, pinned. Smiths do use an extenal extrctor. And although a "true" 1911 should have an internal, I can live with it for a gun as nice as, the make (at least my 1911PD is). One moe thing, at least S&W put an external extracotr in their pistols that actually works from the get go, unlike Kimber which is on their fourth redesign and still having reliability problems. Lastly, although everybody has good and bad days, I've always had good response in a freindly manner when dealing with Smiths customer service, both on the phone and via email. I can't imagine someone from the facotry actually agreed to put an ambi safety in for free if a gun was purchased, then changed their mind. And if they did, I would haver a name of who made the promise and I would be speaking to someone higher up, not giving in.

I had names and all that and still got me no where ... Im a repair tech and and i deal with customers everyday im in there house so i know about cust service i was as nice as i could be till i got yanked around by 3 people ..
Also on my return call they told me person who told me they would do work for free was no longer with Smith hey im cool with that ... But telling me ya want 150$ and then basically asking me why i was stupid enough to buy the pistol without ambi safety took the cake ... Since we are in a right hand dominated world im used to having to comprimise ... If i could have found a 1911 that had everything i wanted in the first place i would have bought the smith did except for the ambi so i bought closest i could .. If ya think im wrong to be mad im sorry ya feel that way i flipped the 700 so i am mad... but enough i dont want this to hijack the thread totally .

Theres enough to write a small novel and you just getting the cliff notes theater version the more i go into detail the more i get mad ... Its the Highroad so im trying to take it as best i can

Ijust posted my .02 didnt want to side track thread ive only had to deal with 2 other makers and had no problems with them .
