I have the model 686 38spl / 357mag 6" barrell and LOVE IT, but now I'm considering its big brother md# 629 44spl / 44mag I would probably shoot more 44 spl. than mag's considering most of my powder burning is at the range rather than in the field hunting. I've heard the 44's are just not has much fun as the smaller 38 / 357mag, what's the thoughts on this ?
I know from standing near them at the range they really create a shock wave and one big boom.

Thanks:)

That depends entirely on who you ask; .38 is less expensive to shoot but it looks like that shouldn't matter since your first two posts are talking about buying a new 1911 and now 629  whatever

"...depends entirely on who you ask..." Yep.
"...probably shoot more 44 Spl..." You reloading? You can load .44 Mag brass to .44 Special velocities. No lube gunk ring to clean out of the cylinders before you shoot magnums either. Magnum brass is easier to find too.
Oh and when you see Magnum ammo in 20 round boxes, it's usually loaded for rifles, not handguns.

Yes, I reload all my 38 & 357, good idea on using mag brass w/ 44spl load. I hadn't thought about that any reason the same can't be done with 357mag w/ 38 load data?
I know presures will change do to more case volume.

If you buy the 629 and start reloading for it..........put a good coat of oil on your 686 cause it will be sitting in the safe.

Not a more accurate and versatile handgun round than 44 Mag to a reloader.

Oh it would be hard to pickle the 686 away, such a sweet straight shooter, but I know what you mean, you can only shoot one at a time.

I know this thread is a bit old but adding my 2 cents. I've been shooting the 629 in 6" for almost a year. It's my favorite gun of all time (and I have several 38s, 357s, 40 S&W, etc). Recoil is very manageable but I sometimes load 240 gr a little light for more control and extended shooting (e.g. 22.5g H110). Have fun!

I'm now toying with getting a 460 s&w mag...
