If S&W came out with a Bodyguard 380 acp minus the integral laser, they would probably take a nice market share away from keltec P3AT and ruger LCP. The price of the bodyguard less laser would probably bring the price down to a price point in line w/ P3AT and LCP. I know I would buy one if it was cheaper and didn't have that stupid laser, especially since the S&W comes w/ nice set of 3-dot sights. Anybody from S&W marketing listening??

Er... what?

From their respective manufactuer websites:

  • S&W Bodyguard 380 w/laser = $399.00 MSRP
  • Ruger LCP w/o laser = $373.00 MSRP
  • Ruger LCP w/laser = $548.00 MSRP
  • Kel-Tec P-3AT = $318.00 - 377.00
Seems to me the S&W with the laser is right in the ball park (price wise) with the guns from Ruger and Kel-Tec without a laser. All other things being equal I'd gladly pay an extra $20-25 for a quality laser sight. ;)

I'd agree with somebody who said that the BG's laser isn't practical in a self defense situation, but it finally got my wife interested in shooting. She had not touched a gun in her life until 6 months ago. With crime going up and her working three nights a week, she finally agreed to buy a gun and get a CCW. She did it just to pacify me, but it backfired! She loves her little BG and is a darn fine shot too! She hunted and searched for the "right gun". Finally decided that the BG fit her right, she could rack the slide and pull the trigger. It gave us something we could do together and enjoy.

I bought my Bodyguard 380 depsite the laser. I have no need for a laser. The problem is that if it stops working I will probably feel compelled to get it fixed :banghead:

S&W B.G w/o insight laser= $350 MSRP??
Ruger LCP w/o laser=$373 MSRP
If I was a consumer I would go for the B.G w/o laser for less $$. At least BG has last round slide hold open feature, usable 3-dot iron sights, and manual safety (should you choose to use it). Absolutely a win for S&W if they can produce the BG w/o laser for same price as LCP. When I bought my LCP the BG was not in production. If I had do it all over again, I would choose the BG w/o Laser over the LCP if the price was the same. BTW that laser is not a cheapie e-bay laser it's made by insight technologies in New Hampshire.

I've thought of this too. I have always considered lasers a useless option for pistols. If it would knock even $20 off the pistol, it would be a good thing.

I am with the OP, what is the real world use of a laser on a pistol that is intended to be used at contact distance anyway? To each their own, but none of my guns have lasers.

3 dot sights on a bodyguard? When did this start happening? Mine just has plain black sights. Is this just an assumption or have you actually seen this with your own eyes?

Just black sights on the wife's pistol.

Hey Camarolover? You ever get up to the gunshop in Greenbrier? Great place and great people. Tell em Hoss says hey if ya do go up there.

Will do Hoss! I was actually thinking about having a pistol transferred there today. You are talking about Guns and Leather correct? I'm from Cullman, AL and went to school in Auburn. You just move down there? Oh and I checked Smith's site, looks like they are still comin with all black sights. Looks like somebody got some mis-info.

MSRP doesn't usually mean diddly. I can buy base LCP for less than $300 everywhere, Kel-Tecs for less than that. The lasered-up Bodyguard is consistently in the $400 range everywhere I've checked--I guess dealers are sticking to the retail price for it for now. A hundred bucks extra for the laser ain't bad unless you just don't want a laser. I don't. But the Bodyguard has all the features I could want in a pocket .380...it's just not worth $100 more than the LCP to me. Lose the laser, sell it for $300 or less and I'll buy it.

Additionally, the laser on the S&W stinks. It may be good quality, that I don't know. But the button near the end of the barrel is a dumb feature. You might as well put a mechanism that requires you to spin in a circle first in order to turn it on. I like the idea of lasers on these little pocket pistols, especially since their sights are terrible, but duping people into buying the Bodyguard because of the laser is downright cruel. More and more, people are going to realize this. I would not be surprised if Smith decides to remove the laser eventually to realistically compete with the LCP, TCP, 3A-T, P380, etc.
