I am going to send mine back for the "updated" version of the slide release. I will be happy to get a functional slide release lever.

To each their own. When your M&P is empty with the slide back and you insert the full mag with a good WHACK, the slide slams forward and loads a round.

I don't need that new slide release... :D

I just bought mine today

This will be my duty weapon when I get out of the academy

The Wilmington Ohio PD just adopted the gun in .40 caliber based on the tests and adoption of the gun by the cities of Cincinnati and Columbus. A friend on the department likes the gun much more than the old S&W 5906 9mm that had been in service for 16 years.:what: I am surprised those guns lasted that long. The local PD, OSHP and Sheriff's office use our club range so we get to know them pretty well. Generally a good group of folks behind the badge here.

The M&P was designed with a "Slide Stop", not a slide release. Personally I prefer the Slide Stop just the way it came from the factory. The M&P's slide will close when a full mag is inserted, thus eliminating the need to use the Slide Stop as a Slide Release. Better yet, never run the gun dry...insert a full magazine before that happens and this whole topic become a mute point.

I got my M&P40 about a week ago, I was looking for a XD40, I hadn't seen a M&P40 in stock at any of the local stores yet and had decided to see if I could find an XD40 with a stainless slide. The first shop didn't have one, second shop I stopped in didn't have the XD in stainless but did have the S&W, so I had the opportunity to check it out in person, and liked it, so it followed me home! :D

9mm without mag safety is 209301

The S&W website doesn't list 9mm #209301. Does it have an internal lock?

What's a good price on the 9mm M&P right now? Found one for about $470 + tax. Have seen other shops at $499 and up.

$470 is a good price. I paid $499 for mine, bought it at Sprague's in Yuma. Sportsman's warehouse in Phoenix had them for $499. Mine doesn't have the Internal lock, but does have the mag safety, which I have gotten used to. I have shot between 5-700 rounds so far without any kind of failure...love this gun!

Does the mag safety on the M&P affect the trigger feel at all? Or do people just not want it because they plan to carry it, or don't want a dropped/released mag to render the round in the chamber useless in a struggle?

What is the trigger like? As far as pull length & effort, how is the DAO?

The trigger pull is interesting. It does not compare well to the trigger pull of a quality SA auto like a 1911 or a BHP. If you expect it to do so, you will be disappointed. What it does do is compare very well to the duty triggers present on most polymer pistols (Glock's SAS, for instance...where the striker is partially cocked by the slide and finished off by the trigger pull) and polymer or steel DAO handguns. That is, naturally, a subjective measure, so people will disagree about which is "better", but it certainly is in the same league. Personally, I think it beats the pants off of the rest of them.

By "interesting" I mean that it is not clean...you can feel some "stuff" going on as you pull it back, but it is by no means bad. It is predictable and you can stage it easily (but it is light enough that you don't really have to do so). The reset took some adjustment for me, but I'm used to the 4506's DA/SA. After a few trials you can work it pretty well. For a duty gun, it is a very good trigger.

As far as length of pull and weight, it is somehwere between a DA and a SA. It is long enough and weighty enough that it is safe without an external safety, but nothing like a traditional DA pull on a DA/SA, or a DAO variant of a DA/SA pistol. Like the Glock, the action is partially cocked by the slide, and the trigger pull just takes it the rest of the way. There's no real way to tell how much of an influence the mag disconnect has on the feel of the trigger without shooting one so-equipped side-by-side with one without the disconnect. I've only shot ones with the disconnect, and I'm perfectly happy with the feel of the trigger.

The gun really shines in the ergonomics department, which is something I never thought I'd say about a S&W autopistol. You have to hold it and shoot it to appreciate this. Such things are entirely subjective, but the only gun I've shot with better hand-feel is my BHP. It's that good (to me).

It's by no means perfect, but it's a pretty good gun.

Thank you Mike for your impression of the trigger & ergos.

When I look at the M&P I see Steyr influence. Low bore axis and similar grip.

I'm wondering how the M&P compares to the Steyr M-A1 for trigger, ergos and shootability? Anybody had the chance to compare the M&P to a Steyr?

I've held both, just not at the same time. The Steyr's grip angle seems more radical (not necessarily in a bad way), and the barrel seems to sit lower. the M&P seems to be a blend between Steyr ergonomics and more conventional ergonomics. I've never shot a Steyr, so I dunno how they compare in that regard. I'm inclined to think that if you like the Steyr, you'll like the M&P.

Oh, and if you pick up a M&P and you dislike it, ask to switch out the grips (or handle one with the other grips in place). They make a huge difference.
