i think the frame sag issues only happens to the mid and full size models, haven't seen it on the compact yet.

S&W sent me a Striker Assembly yesterday, 2nd Day FedEx. Not bad considering there was a holiday in between. I have confidence issues though. If there was a little more beef at the right angle where the striker comes up from the assembly I think it would be fine.

The latest M&P 45 striker you received is probably the latest revision, which means it has benefited from some further attention to owner/user feedback. I had to wait a while for them to arrive when I was ordering some spare parts.

I bought my M&P45c in December '08 and had to send it in to Smith the following day. It was missing the pin that holds the sear disconnect lever in the sear block. Not a big deal, but something S&W should have never let out the door. They fixed in a week, but again should have be avoided.

Unfortunately the striker is exactly the same. The rep told me that it doesn't happen that it was a 1 in million chance. I would send in the old one with a letter about what I think would be an improvement without changing the housing or assembly. Considering their lack of concern on the phone and no response in email I'm sure the letter and part would be filed away to the trash.

The new revised M&P .45 striker has a part description of: NEW M&P STRIKER REV A.

Not all changes to metal parts are dimensional changes. Metallurgical and/or hardening changes may not necessarily be visible to the eye. "Beefing up" a part may be more easily and effectively done by introducing a change in the manufacturing, metallurgical and/or hardening process, instead of just making a part thicker or heavier. There's striker mass/spring rate issues to consider, if nothing else ...

This is why the engineers get paid. ;)

Sent you a PM, BTW.

I just got back from my first range session with my new S&W M&P 45 ACP. This model has the night sites, the thumb safety and no magazine safety. I loaded ONE round (my first shot with a new gun is always ONE round, just in case the darned thing tries to blow up in my hand). That round went directly into the center of the bull's eye at 21 feet. I about packed up and went home right then! "Ayup, that's all I need to know." Instead, I put about 75 rounds of factory 230 FMJ and 185-230 HPs through the pistol--all without a hitch. The gun did NOT work with my dad's LSWC reloads, but he loads these for HIS guns and they are notorious for being over sized in most other guns. No worries. Lesson learned.

I put the over sized LSWCs aside and fired strong hand only and week hand only without a hitch. Everything went in tight little groups at 21 feet. So, I hung a B27 target and rolled it out to 75 feet. I fired 5 rounds each at every target distance including SHO and WHO at 21 feet and 5 rounds at 15 feet so fast the range officer blinked the lights and gave me the I'm-gonna-cut-your-throat-if-you-do-that-again sign. I scored 94% on points and 100% if you count everything inside the 8 rings as a hit. No missing shots. No stray shots. I only had 5 rounds just into the 8 ring lower left (typical for me).

The trigger is fine as is. The night sights are awesome. The gun weighs 36 oz. loaded (that's 10 oz. lighter than the S&W 645 I'm replacing). Recoil did NOT hurt my hand (and that's a special problem for me as even the Ruger P345 and Glock 19 hurt my hands). The safety works perfectly and I even like the all black finish that will hide well against a black t-shirt.

I'm so taken with this firearm that if the reliability continues for 500 rounds, I will probably make this my ONE GUN and have my name inscribed on the top of the slide.

This evidentury trail makes me believe the S&W does not have a working Quality Plan that is being adhered to by Quality Engineering during final assembly, inspection and testing of their product prior to sending pistols out to their dealers for sale.

IN 2008 S&W produced 261,115 handguns. I'm sure there were even more for 2009. You listed a few malfunctions as evidence that ALL of them are substandard. Brilliant. You do realize that the only reason your logic doesn't apply to ALL manufacturers is just that you don't have the DESIRE to apply it to them? Firearms are machines and they aren't perfect. I would love to know what manufacturer you think doesn't have any of those same problems?

I had a talk with my FFL dealer who does 40%+ business with law enforcement officers.

What he told me was that in his 20+ years of selling firearms, he has seen just about every make have some issues (some more than others). He noticed newer models have the most amount of manufacturer related failures/malfunction. All the problem cases have been promptly addressed by the factory service centers.

I believe some manufacturer may take the position of "if it breaks, then we'll fix it" vs doing a recall because it costs less. S&W is taking the right step by doing a recall, but it gets more media/public attention than another manufacturer who may experience just as much problem and chooses not to do a recall. Maybe JD & Powers should do customer satisfaction surveys like cars. I believe the actual results would surprise many people (even to my surprise, Buick surpassed Lexus in recent years - I now drive a Buick).

I personally experienced a KaBoom with my G30. The pistol was sent to Glock and repaired promptly. Because of this experience, do I have less confidence in my Glocks? No. I won't hesitate to buy another Glock or recommend one to a new shooter.

I also own a S&W M&P 40 that I have not experienced any problem with. Although I am a devoted fan of Glocks, I wish Glock would have incorporated some of features from M&P like the ambi slide release.

IMHO.
