Safe $1500 budget! Would love to do less! UPDATED!

Ok I am rethinking my safe approach. I look at it from a perspective that I would have this for a long time! I dont have a substantially firearms investment but I have enough with ammo to know I dont want to lose it! I estimate my guns are valued at: $5500. My Ammo is around $2000 as well. And $1000 for Knives. So a firesafe is a must. I would like a safe with better than a 10 gauge side wall rating and a 1/4" solid plate steel door. I would like a foot print of 60x30x22...plus or minus an inch or so. I would like the door to close tightly and not have a ton of play in it. Let me know what you guys are thinking.

Oh and originally I was looking at the 600 dollar safe only to realize that most are 14 gauge or so maybe 12. Fire ratings are bear minimum. And almost all at that range were made in china with crap chinese steel. So I had to pull back and rethink this. I was will at one point to so a champion model t, for it was not bad for 800. The steel although 12 gauge was american steel that was hardened far and away better then the chinese junk...the winchester I looked at over at TSC I could flex the body and the steel (that was rated at 12 gauge) far more than I was anticipating. 12 gauge isnt the same from china to the USA. Oh and the door...I dont want any play in it...the winchester when I took a second look had so much play and slop I cancelled my order on the spot. But anyway, this is where I am at.

Read below:

Originally I started cheap...then realized that 14 gauge and even 12 gauge arent gonna cut it. Some 12 gauge is hardened better than others US based heat treating can do wonders. I am a knife guy so I know this first hand! And multiple layers can also make a difference, But that is only one of the many reasons I decided to take a step back and rethink this. So now I have upped my speced and set some minimums in my search to find the right safe. I am hoping my post will help others as well. Would like to be under $1500

1) Size: 60x28x22 +/- and inch or two. I cant get much more room to spare in where I can put this safe. So this size is pretty much set. I think it will be suitable and I know you guys will knock this but dont have any plans to add to the collection. I have tons of other much higher priorities past this safe purchase to do with my cabbage at least over the next 2-5 years.

2) Steel thickness: The body needs to be 10 gauge at the least...this area is quite unbelievable to me because so many expensive safes I looked at like Browning, Liberty and so on are 12-11 gauge body steel and you are pushing the $1800-2500 mark in cost! I found safes made in the USA and other places that were 10-gauge or better at around 1100-1500. Even a Rhino 56 with is 1200 had a 10 gauge and a 1/4" solid plate steel door (more on that later). Sturdy was 7 gauge and it was 1400 shipped!!! Didnt include fire proofing but still! 7 gauge body...good luck with an axe or a sledge! I know 9 gauge repels a sledge and an axe pretty good. I have seen a 9 gauge safe take quite a few shots in the same spot with a fire axes and nothing happened! But again if one is really determined they could spend a ton of time and energy to eventually get in but the overwhelming majority wont!

3) Door thickness: Minimum would be a 1/4" solid plate steel. Composite doors are very deceiving. They are thick more so for the fireproofing as well as for the locking mechanism.

4) Locking bolts: Size is at least 1". Has to cover 4 sides, not necessarily active 4 sides for I dont understand the reason people dont like deadbolts on the hinge side! I would think they would be just as effective as live if not better for the mounting should be easier and tougher then a moving mechanism. I would think 3-4 per side and one on the top and bottom would be ideal!

5) Fire rating: I live in a suburb were the firestation is less then a mile away...make that 2 fire stations are less than a mile away. Would 30 mins cut it...yeah probably. But safe is going in the basement so might need to be more. We have a 2 story townhouse so the basement is where the ambers fall in a fire. it would be against a concrete wall but still. 30 is tha absolute minimum. Oh and if they are rated...they already have the expanding gasket!

6) Lock: S&G, Lagard, and a few others. I would actually like a combo over a digital. I know it is such a remote possibility but an EMP...and you no get into safey! Would I do an electronic..sure but prefer a combo

7) Warranty: This is the least of my worries so liberty and all the other guys...I could care less. I cant say I have heard much about then in a bad or good situation. The locks is what I hear can be an issue but every place I have spoken to...both locksmiths and Local Gun shops said they never hear of it...the smith said 99% of this issues with the locks is someone forgetting the combo!

8) Relockers: YES!

9) Pry-resistant: YES!

10) Hard Plate: You know the one behind lock to prevent drilling and so on. Almost all safes have this at the price level and companies I am considering it. So this isnt as big of a deal or something to look for. Same kinda goes with the relockers.

11) Door frame: Almost always overlooked. This is the structure that holds the locks in place doing an attack. Frame has to be thick and strong!

So here is what I have found that matches my above:

1) Sturdy Model 2723 ($1400 w/o Fire includes shipping):

Pros: Body steel is 7 gauge, Thick door, 5/16" plate steel on from of door, built like a Sherman tank!

Cons: UGLY!! , Handle is basic, need to spend 500 more for fireproofing

2) Steelwater HD593024 (1499 with shipping)

Pros: 9 gauge body steel, 1/4" plate steel door, 2 hour fire rating, Lock, door handle, attractive design, number of bolts and thickness of them, External Hinge to allow door to open more

Con: Origin of manufacturing, Steel origin??

3) Rhino 56 (1200 with shipping)

Pros: Price, warranty, service, Overall feature set is nice

Cons: It is at the minimum of all my categories and it is smaller than the others. But I still really like this safe. If it was 100 or so less it would be a better justification.

4) Zykan Eagle ZES 24 ($887 shipping not included)

Pros: Price, Price, Price, Good fire rating

Cons: It hits all my minimums, fairly unknown, origin of manufacturing and steel.

5) Diamond Back GS5930H ($1300 shipped)

Pros: Fire rating, Size, Hinges, Locks,

Cons: origin of manufacturing and stee, price considering what you get compared to others, fair unknown name

6) Pentagon/Sportsman Steel SF-2/Cadet/Special Agent (Price

Pros: Seem to be price, US Made,

Cons: Super confusing out of date websites, Why two companies??? Cant seem to know exactly what the price is nor shipping, didnt return calls and so on

7) Amsec BF6030 (1200 shipping not included)

Pros: Great name and great features, fit and finish, one of the most recommended safes I have considered, tons of locks and the locks are big 1.5", external hinge,

Cons: certain areas dont meet my mins body is 12 gauge, door isnt as thick, pricey for the specs (because of the name?) If I were to get a 12 gauge safe the best bang for the buck is the Champion model t!

Let me know what you guys think. Several on this list I have never seen nor heard much about so many are cause for concern. I like the Rhino and the Steelwater. Would do the sturdy but it get costly when you add the fireproofing, it is also ugly as sin...not that safes are nice to look at...they are a box but the nicer handles. Bet graphics, better colors...and so on! Sturdy could sell more than anyone else if they style it differently...dress it up!!! It is a tank and has all the fixings of the best safe of the pack but it is just flat out an eye soar!

Value safe

Soapbox,

I studied the heck out of this issue 2 years ago and I found that $1500 is a starting point depending on the features you want. I ended up getting a Sentry Safe from Wal-Mart for $800. My 1st priority was safety for my small kids and second was theft. My safe is not fancy, but it foes the job. Shipping is on top of the $1500, too, since these things are really heavy and require a shipping company to be involved.

Here is what I got. Note that it qualifies for 97 cent shipping. That's real. I got it shipped to my curb for a buck. Tipped the driver $40 and we (mostly he) took it into the garage where it sits today. Unbeatable value.

Well Soap your still not going to find a new gun safe with your new criteria specs at that price.
At the $1500 price in a new gun safe you will start finding imports that sort of meet your new specifications, but once you start getting into the 10 gauge bodies and plate doors you are looking at prices of $2000-$2500 in the gun safe size you are looking at.
Although I am not a huge fan of Liberty safes or Champion but the Liberty Lincoln and Champion Triumph in textured paint can be had in the $1800-$2000 price range.
Check Sturdy's web site and see what they can do for you as they dont have a dealer network but Terry seems to be a good guy and they are pretty solid gun safes that use thicker than usual steel than a lot of other safe builders use in similiar priced models.

What you are starting to realize, just like I (and others have) did a few years back is that before buying a gun safe you need to research the crap out of companies, models, steel, doors, locks, etc. before buying and then research some more.

I would check with A1abdj (Frank) here on the forum to see what he has in that price range. I know Curt at CESafes (www.cesafes.com) sells the US-made series of Rhino Safes for about $1200. I believe it has 1/4 steel in the door and 11 ga. exterior. I know it exceeds the specs of the Rhino series made overseas. He has both. Check the link.

The rhino 56 is the top of my list. Seems to have all the fixing I need 10 gauge (I would like better but this is at least the minimum I will do in a safe). I also looked at a steelwater which was 1499 shipped and has 9 gauge body with a 1/4" plus solid steel door. I was pretty impressed with the steelwater. Sturdy isnt bad in fact the best and also around 1400 however!! And this is big...no fireproofing of the sturdy at the 1400 mark. You need to add some cabbage to get the fire rated one. It hits 2K in the size I need with fire proofing...it is a 7 gauge beast for the body!!! This safe is gonna take a lot to crack!! There is one thing that i absolutely hate about sturdy safes...they are so UGLY!!! They could sell these like hot cakes if they did some better styling. Not all of use can hide our safe...at least make it look nice if we cant! White elephant in the room is bad!

Two review, I am looking for a safe that is around 60x30x22 or so. In addition to 10 gauge body steel minimum and 1/4" solid plate steel doors. It needs to have 4 sides hardened steel 1" or greater live locks, and S&G combo...electronics are alright if that is what the safe comes with as long as it is a lagard or like and the right class! Fireproofing needs to be 45 mins as the minimum. So with all that said the rhino is the best bang for the buck it fits these requirements or better. Not the best but better than the 12 gauge I was looking at before I doubled down. I also looked at Zykan Eagle Series safes...now zero about them. Seem decent and the price is really good! There was one other that was priced well also, pentagon/sportsman steel safes know zero about them. I was disappointed in what I saw from Browning at that price point 12 gauge body, composite door, libery was the same...you had to really jump in price when they are already decent safes for around 1400-1500 from other manufacturers...browning and liberty are getting by on their name too much at that price point without offering a really security.

If you raise your budget by a few hundred you will be in the market for an American Security BF 6032 gun safe. With that your looking at 1/2" steel plate door, 11 gauge body with additional 16 gauge inner steel liner, and both the door and body are composite, filled with a concrete like fire clay. BF series gun safes are fire rated for 90 minutes at 1400 degrees.

You can get a good safe at that price. Jest check to see if it has a 30min burn rate of 15000 or14000 This will tell you if it is a good one no less than 14000

Natchez has there stack-on for 1.319.99 that are a good safe 1400F for 30min that holds 22 long guns. Most fires will last more than 30min at that temp. But there is safes that will last 90min at a little more money. Where my safe is it is on a concert so there is not much chance that the heat will be that bad if there is a fire.

Summitt Series Ranier is another I discovered. It hits all the minimums. Price is decent and looks like a quality safe. I dont know where is is made or much of the inside. The website doesnt have too much detail or pictures on it.

Oh and my mistake...meant TF6030. BF is the best from Amsec. If I could get it for 1200...I wouldnt be looking at anything else. It really is one of the best safes out!

Steelwater has been a safe that I would like to know more about but cant seem to find anyone with experience with one.

Soapbox, about 5 years ago I purchased a Diamondback 42 inch wide safe. I did a lot or research before my purchase and am still happy with it.

On that , a stand alone safe is just marginally secure.

#1 safe is located in a area of my home that only a few people know I have one.
2# its in a position that only allows frontal assault and not enough room for pry bars or axes to be used.
3# anchored to a concrete floor.
4# whole house alarm system
5# separate motion alarm in the room where the safe is located that is connected to cellular alarm unit, wireless and battery powered that automatically dials my cellphone if it's tripped.

Layered levels of security are a better bet than just depending on a safe only.

Guys I ended up doing a lower cost safe. I spoke with my Insurance agent and several police friends and went with a Champion Model T. It was 650 and does really what I need. It will be bolted down and in a corner. All my cop buddies told me the same...they have never seen a safe breached. Many have been on the job for 20+ years. They told me they have been in houses with crappy stack ons and sentrys and still nothing...most if not all burglaries without even an attempt to break in. Told me almost all break ins are snatch and grabs...quick in and out. Plus my insurance guys clearly told me that everything I own (we talking about the value of each gun in a claim) is covered in full. So I past on the big bucks safe. I scoured the web trying to find breakin examples, stories, pictures. It hit youtube, googled, etc. Scours all the forums I belong too. The only thing I kept coming across was a liberty and a winchester...that was it. I spent 4 weeks looking. Pictures from a manufacturers website doesnt count. I asked (posted) questions for actual stories and pictures on a number of forums...nothing. I did find manufacturers marketing video of break ins (Staged)...but I take that like a grain of salt.

This pursuit was getting frustrating because so many tried to talk me into a big heavy $1500+ safe. "You need 7 gauge, 3/8 solid doors...etc" They mentioned "they had heard of this guy who..."...After speaking with my locksmith as well...I am happy I didnt spend big money on this. If someone does actually get in...so be it...that is why I have insurance. There just wasnt enough proof of all these supposed break ins and breaches to justify a ton of money. I dont have collectibles in my collection...I also dont have a ton of guns either. So I believe I did the right things...I think too many go at this wrong, fall to the marketing and the stories that you just cant find or the actual pictures of real break ins.

Well your cop buddies just have not been in the right neighborhood because I have seen several breeched gun safes.
Some that I can remember right off hand was...
A 12 gauge Cannon Patriot on display at a Fort Knox dealership I visited that had the back completely beaten through.
Another was a 12 gauge Sam's Club Winchester I saw pictures of on a Glock forum that had the door pried right open in a matter of minutes.
On a Ruger forum I saw another cheap 12 gauge Cannon American Eagle that had been cut open with a sawzall.
A nice Fort Knox that also had been cut open with a Sawzall.
Then there was the Liberty safe a1abdj posted a picture of that went viral through out the internet.
And then another one most everyone has seen on You Tube of the two guys with massive pry bars prying it open as it laid on it's back while they were prying it.

So,while it is true a lot of thieves want to get in and out as fast as possible,I am under the belief that once they see the safe they are going to at least give it a try.
Probably if the door starts flexing when they pry it they will hang with the effort a bit.
If it's solid and does not give because it's plate steel with a good reinforced body the game with that get's much harder.

Feel free to post the links and pictures...I scoured looking for this stuff and I could not find it. I am on numerous forums and saw nothing...thefiringline, mp-pistols, THR, AR15, m4, walther, xcr, acr, etc...nothing

I wont search down all these links but they are definitely there and not figments of old heeler's imagination.
I remember the one on Glock Talk because the title of the thread was something like "My Winchester safe failed me" or some such.
They are there and I am sure there are scores of gun safes that get changed out by the makers yearly due to burglary damage due to the life time warranties most gun safe makers give on the safes.
It's highly doubtful any would give you the number of replacements they have to send out though.

Oh yea I also remember another story on a site called Snipers Hide I stumbled on googling these very things and came across a guy from Arizona whose Browning Medallion gun safe got worked over pretty good but was not breeched.
Also fwiw there is a picture of a destroyed Liberty Presidential on Liberty's own website that was ruined in a Tyler Texas home burglary.
Another site showed a picture of two Liberty safes that were in a large closet that had been sawzalled into.
There is a guy over at AR-15.com that goes by the name Snopzynsk or something simliar that claims he pried open a Liberty Lincoln by his lonesome in about 7.5 minutes.
Read their safe archives enough and you will find the claim.
Look long enough and you will find these things.
I did.
Which is why I mentioned in another post that a person should research the crap out of gun safe construction, doors, metal thickness, lock mechanisms, etc. and then research some more.

im on sniperhides also posted their as well as searched...nothing. I have seen the winchester and the liberty but only one of each...I have seen the same one on a number of sites/forums...but those are the same two that seem to have been floating around for a long time now.

It's amazing what one can find while googling.
And sometimes it's not always successful.
But then again,as I have seen, put in the right phrase or word combination and it pops up.
I think I read the Snipers hide story somewhere around October or November of 2009 or 2010.
Honestly while doing my extensive research on gun safes I wished I would have book marked a lot of these finds.
But I'm a mechanic by trade and am not a big computer buff.
Hell I cant even do a quote on this site.
