You're not likely to get a decent used .357 for $300. Even a .38 in reasonable shape is going to cost more than that. You might find a used Ruger SP101 or Security Six or a K-frame Smith around $400, if you're patient and lucky.
Thanks, Sergei -- guess I'm just going to have bide my time till I can come up with the pesos for a pistola. Meanwhile, it's back to my old standbys: my pop gun, or, as a last resort, Pez Dispenser.

Look for a Taurus 66. Very well built guns. Taurus has a bad reputation but that seems to stick to a few specific models. The 66 has had few if any bad reviews that I have ever seen. They are likely the closest you will find to your price point and be a decent gun. There are Rossi guns that are the same quality but I haven't kept up with the model numbers. Outside of that, your looking for "cosmetically challenged" guns or pawn shop treasures. There are very few .357s I would encourage people to avoid, llama and RG are the ones that come to mind.

Find another local shop to do your transfers. Then shop on Gunbroker, buds etc to get a good price. When the gun comes in , show your appreciation by spending some of your savings on something in the shop. ( Ammo, holster, Cleaning supplies.... That way you get more bang for your buck and the receiving shop (that treated you OK) makes a little extra profit on something for his troubles. Win-Win.
