Savage 110 7MM

Looking to purchase a bolt action rifle on a budget that I can use out west for Elk, I found a savage 110 7mm for $240, I was thinking of replacing the original stock with a thumbhole laminate stock I noticed boyds makes one for around $100, then purchase a decent leupold or Nikon Scope to round out the set up. Good Price on the 7MM? Anyone have any experience with the boyds stocks?

If it has an accu trigger and is in good shape that's a great price. If it doesn't have an accu trigger, I'd say it's a good price but not a steal by any means.

Yes, buy it. I have one and am very pleased with it. The most accurate of all my hunting rifles, even without the accutrigger.

Thumbhole laminate stocks are very heavy. Elk live at very high elevation in hard to get to places. I'd stick w/ el-cheapo lightweight stock.

Of course, if you get one, you'll have several hundred pounds of meat to carry...

I'd say it's a fair price if the bore looks good, accu-trigger or not.

If your buying a 7mm Rem. Mag. you need at least a 24" barrel for the round to reach max. velocity, some of the cheaper rifles only come with 20" or 22" barrels. Some of the 7mmmags in the medium price range come with 26" barrels; of course the type of use can change your requirements. My friend just purchased the 116 package in .308 and he loves it!

I doubt for the price you are stating, that this is a new enough model to have an "AccuTrigger"--which is just fine--cause in my humble opinion the AccuTrigger is a POS. Having said that, yes, your $240.00 is a good buy, and No, I would not restock it if its to be a "walking round" rifle. I own several of these rifles in various calibers, and with proper "tweeking" they all shoot under 2" at 200yds--plenty good for hunting. Also their triggers can be adjusted to meet your needs. Enjoy the rifle--it'll keep up with the pricey stuff no problem.
