bent barrel stud 1.jpg

barrel.jpg Hi all,...Savage 99 brush gun, .358 winchester, bought used a few months ago, after first few (4) rounds, fore end rattled loose, tightened down, loosend again and fell off, stud stripped out of dovetail- replaced stud and it did the same thing (this is the stud stripping out of the dovetail, not the screw stripping out of the stud)-

Could too tight a fit for the fore end between the stud/barrel and the receiver cause too much stress during firing (i.e. sand down the receiver end of the fore end?) and bust it loose? Its a little frustrating-

help always appreciated!

more pics if it matters.....

its sorta purdy even though its broke!

Those are nice rifles, I've always enjoyed working on them.

It might have pulled out because of the wood swelling and pushing against the barrel. It also might be a replacement stud that wasn't fit well.

I would solder the lug on. Any decent gunsmith should be able to do this without hurting the finish. When repaired, maybe blue loc-tite the screw so it doesn't shoot loose.

Looks like both the barrel dovetail and the stud dovetail have metal displaced in the edges from the stud pulling out.

Use a smooth-face flat punch and hammer to tappy-tap everything back where it came from and get a good tight fit.

Then remount with red lock-tight and let it cure a day before reattaching the forened screw.

Thanks, fellas! We'll give it a shot and see how she does- hoping to get it fixed to hunt with, there's kinda a cool feeling about carrying the 99 palmed in the receiver bottom- no nagging extruding clip to bug your hand, and balances so well you'd almost feel guilty using a sling-
