Is anybody currently making a replacement barrel in 300 Blackout for Savage rifles as a regular inventory item? I think that Midway once sold them but hasn't offered them for a while.

I was thinking I could rebarrel my Stevens 200 cheaper than buying a Ruger. I certainly could have one faster because who knows when the Ruger guns will ever actually reach the shelves.

Are you taking about the Ruger American Ranch 300 BLK? If so Grabagun has them in stock for $376, and there are several for sale on Gunbroker as well. I would bet that by the time you got the Mcgowen, or especially the Shilen barrel threaded w/ thread protector, you would be at or over the cost of the Ruger.

You would lose that bet.

I got a McGowen 16.5" barrel that was already threaded for $205 in stock.

I've lost bets before, but it sounds like you got an uncommonly good deal, where did you pick up that barrel?

Here are standard costs pulled from each barrel makers website.

Shilen:
$345 - Savage prefit (blued)
$75 - Muzzle threading
$45 - Thread protector
Total - $465

McGowen
$295 - Savage prefit (Blued)
$35 - Muzzle threading (Assuming same cost as McGowen custom order)
$45 - Thread protector (Assuming same as Shilen)
Total - $375

If you build a custom Savage thread 300 Blk barrel on McGowen's site, the cost for a blued, crowned, chambered and muzzle threaded barrel comes out to $355 without a thread protector. Also, McGowen doesn't have any 300 Blk Savage prefits in stock right now, but the cheapest prefit they do have in stock is not threaded/no thread protector, and is priced at $325.

So, to the OP, if you can get one of these barrels for less than 60% normal cost like aubie515, then that's probably the way to go otherwise you might be better off just picking up the Ruger.

Gunshack has them for $270

That looks like a really good deal, 416 stainless to boot. I'd probably still buy the Ruger because for $100 more I'd rather have an additional complete rifle, but if the OP isn't using the Stevens 200, or likes that platform better, $270 for a stainless, threaded barrel with thread protector is a sweet deal.

There was a vendor selling the McGowen over on 300BLKTalk. I agree that if you are just buying vs building that the Ruger Ranch would be the most cost effective route. At the time I put together my Axis in 300BO...the Ruger was not available.

My little tally, hah, cute. Well the Ruger has a threaded barrel and a thread protector, so if you're comparing apples to apples why wouldn't you add those costs in? Plus who buys a 300 BLK Bolt gun with no thought of suppressing it at some point? There is a reason pretty much every off the shelf 300 BLK barrel you can find is threaded.

He wants a threaded muzzle. Gunshack seems to be the leader at the moment. Thanks for the heads-up.

I already have a muzzle protector from my other gun, but it pretty much stays on top of my safe.

By the time I paid shipping plus FFL fee I would be at $425. I'm hopeful I can convert the Stevens for enough of a savings over a complete rifle to make it worthwhile.
