I noted, in another thread, that Savage was chambering one of their model 12s in .260 Rem, a terrific long-range rifle caliber. I just left their website and am pumped...they've added the .260 Rem and the 6.5 Creedmor to their Mod 11 Long Range Hunter Series and the .260 Rem to their Predator Hunter. They've also added a "Bear Hunter" stainless rifle in .300 Win and .338 Win and a number of others as well.

Now I've had a 116 FHSAK Weather Warrior in .30-06 for 1-1/2 years and it's a heckuva shooter...I routinely get sub 1" groups at 100 yds with Fed GMM and with my handloads using a number of hunting and target bullets. I love their Accutrigger, the Accustock and the adjustable muzzle brake...I may order a LRH or Target model in the immediate future.

I had held off on the 111 LRH in 6.5x284 because brass is expensive and barrel wear was a consideration. I was anxious to try either the 6.5x55 Swede or the .260 Rem but didn't like the choice of rifle alternatives for me. Now, problem solved.

I know Sako offers the mod. 85 and Tikka T3 series in 6.5x55 and the mod. 85 in .260 but liked the idea of a longer barrel...now there's the Savage.

Jerkface11,

I had called Savage CS a while back to inquire about their charges for a .260 bbl on the 11 LRH and got an answer of about $300. I note that that's approx. the same as I'd spend with a custom barrel maker at a minimum.

Now I've got a few other rifles to use and I was in no rush but have been considering a nice birthday present for myself when I turn 65 in a few months...the Sako 85, a Cooper or custom was on the horizon.

I realize that many folks would find my attitude a bit conservative...but since I handload and shoot at least a couple of times a week, I wasn't feeling too deprived and I do have a 6.3x62 (.25-06) to use in the meantime. I was actually thinking of turning that into a 6.5-06...with the .30-06 brass I've kept from shooting my Garands I'm pretty well set, although with 90 gr Sierra HPBT and 100gr Sierra Match Kings, that rifle shoots to 0.6" for me.

Long answer to a short question.

:D

Harry I had the same need. What I did about it was get a Shilen 6.5x55 barrel and put it on my model 12 BVSS. It will shoot 3 shots in to 5/8s inch at three hundred yds. Using 140 Berger VLDs over Reloader 22. I hope you have the same results with a 260.

I love the old 6.5x55, those Sweeds sure knew what they were doing to design a round like that almost 120 years ago (the rifle was exellent too), I have yet to cook up a handload that would not make tiny little bug holes at the range. I don't think even the 6mm PPC is more inharently accurate.

Does any know if the muzzle brake is removable or can be had without the muzzle brake on the savage 111 long range hunter. I am worried about condensation and freeze hunting in harsh conditions.
