There's still some silver scopes around, just have to look for'm.I have a cpl Leupolds.

That's a fine rifle in a solid chambering, and my personal favorite hunting barrel, SS fluted "magnum profile". Have several 700's and a cpl TC's.

Yes. So someone over at Cabelas figured they'd tell Savage to cut it down 2" to 24" and make it an exclusive? Just weird.

That is not uncommon for retailers to request changes for an exclusive model like that. Either way, the two inch difference should not effect how it shoots. I love how the Savage varmint barrels shoot. My Model 12 308 and MkII 17m2 rimfire are blued while my MkII 22lr is stainless and all three are very accurate.

Figured I'd give an update if anybody's still reading this one.

I fired off some old reloads I had for a Remington 700 SPS to get it on paper and zero it in. 168gr SMK, 42.0gr IMR 4064, Lapua Brass, CCI LR, 2.8" even, grouped 1/2 MOA or better. Took 10 rounds to get on bullseye. Then 5 more to test the group with that particular reload. Got about 1.5"-1.75". I didn't expect much due to that load being for the 700.

So I took the 15 fired cases and picked out a few and did the old blacken the bullet to check length to land technique. All 3 read 2.760~2.765 on 168 gr SMK.

I know it's not a perfect technique but that seems mighty short. Do SMK's have goofy ogives? Seems more 150 gr territory to me.

Anyways, I have some loaded up to try out in the next couple days.

loaded some 150 bronze points for my buddies .308 and they were in the lands at 2.80, so some guns may just have short throats.

Way late update, but after firing 40+ rounds I decided to re-measure a few dummy rounds. Mainly because I bought 178 gr ELD-Match bullets from Hornady. I knew the ogive would be different.

I started with a 168 smk sharpie/dummy round and got 2.82". Which blew my mind because before it read 2.760". So the throat may have been rough making it never truly touch the lands on the previous dummies?

Anyway I decided to try the 178 gr Hornadys and got a measurement of 2.832" with the sharpie method. So I loaded up some 178's in my new Sig Sauer Elite .308 win brass (seems like good stuff) with imr4064 and cci br-2 primers.

I went from 40.0gr in increments of .5 up to 42.5. All coal being 2.830". I found nodes only at the complete high end and low end. So I played with the high end.

308win, 2.830", 42.0 gr imr4064, cci br-2 lr, virgin Sig Brass, 178 Hornady ELD-Match, 5 shots @100yds. 20200911_174208.jpg

My only complaint is the reticle I chose on the Luepold VX-Freedom. The freedom has real nice glass for the money but I went with the Tri-MOA reticle. 174183_reticle.png The hash marks are so fine and close together the reticle becomes just a gimmick. The 3 big hash marks could be of use. Maybe. Cause those are all you really pick up when looking through it.

Anyway, loving the rifle. My first SS. Still getting used to the looks. Absolutely love the AccuTrigger. 20200814_180612.jpg

Remington did a Model 7 w fluted stainless bbl in black stock.
Unfortunately they didnt do it in .243 win.
Or id be running one.

Did see some Savage stainless and thought one of those, w a shorter fluted bbl like the Model 7 would be cool.......if in 250 or 300 savage :)

Btw ....OP I think the rifle looks fine w matte scope. In fact if I get a stainless rig Id want a matte scope on it.

Silver scopes are just too much for my eye.

Glad that you like the rifle and it shoots good for you. I did not think that you would be disappointed with it. All of the Savage rifles with their varmint barrel that I have owned shoot well.

I like that group.
I love that ruler!
Nice loading and shooting, Minnesota!
Thank you kindly. Now that the brass has been fired from the rifle, I get to see if I can do better. But I'm happy enough.

The ruler got taken away from the young one cause big mama thought it was too provocative. Give it another look. Lol. I like it though.
