Hi,

So I know this may be silly, but of all the pump shotguns I've listened to, I think the Mossberg 500 makes the nicest "schuck schuck" noise. It's so crisp and the sound of metal sliding and locking up is distinct. I own an 870 express, and it sounds a lot duller. I would rate the Ithaca 37 in 2nd place for nice sound. Winchester also sounds good too. Browning BPS is solid too.

Sorry, I like the sound =D

Guys weigh in on your favorite pump gun's shuck shuck.

Never thought about it, but I've got an 870, a 1300, a 590, and a few 500s I could test for a fee and get right back to you. :D

Actually in the few times I've found myself wondering about a bump in the night, the last thing I wanted to do was make any sort of racket.

Ithaca model 37 for me

I have been using the Ithaca 37 in 3 old guns for more than 40 years and the sound and action is better with each passing year. For me nothing in a pump gun can compare to its butter-smooth action and sound.

Do you think the brown of this stock matches my boots?

Does this 12 gauge make my butt look big?

I think I'll go with the 410 today, it is just sooooo slimming. :p:D

Oh... I went with the 870, because you left out my favorite... the Winchester Model 12! The mossy always sounded kinda rickety to me. :)

I chose Winchester 1300, because I own one. between My 1300 and a buddies Mossy I think the Winchester sounds cleaner.

It is scientifically proven in an FBI study from 1997 that the schuck schuck of a pump action shotgun instantaneously causes all criminals with a 500 yard radius to instantly empty their bowels

Anyway my vote is for the Mossberg

I voted 870 because the majority of my experience has been with them. I own two Model 12s' and a Model 37 that I have aquired later in life. I love the sound of them all. My challenge to you is; the sound of a round actually being chambered. With all of my pumps, the sound is distinctly different than an empty rack of the slide. I don't consider gun noise a deterant to a crime, but you just gotta love that sound.:)

The shuck shuck sound may not be a complete deterrent to some crimes, like a violent robbery. However, I'm sure that sound is a deterrent to some other crimes. For example, imagine you're a bar owner and you see a fight about to break out; you pull out your big gun and issue a "shuck shuck" just to let everybody know it ain't happening on your watch. I think that ought to be enough to keep the peace.

Dakota asked a simple question. Which sound is the scariest? All of them but the 870 has a distinct sound.

Good question that I'm glad to chime in on.

There was an article about the validity of using a duck gun as a home defense weapon a few years back. The author said that the sound of the pump shotgun action was the most terrifying thing that an intruder can hear. However, a reader sent a response in that read:

"I would prefer to have the action at the ready, so that when I reveal my hand its with a blast of #7 shot in the chest."

I totally agree...

Racking of the action works in Hollywood. For the real world, they might hear me snick off the safety before I unleash hell upon them.

Couldn't vote, because you left out the most frightening sounding one of all time.

The Model 97 Winchester!

That's not what dak0ta asked. Anyway, the issue that you're discussing is interesting. What other gun does an 870 sound like, since you say an 870 is not distinctive?

I think it has more to do with the configuration of the gun. The "loudest" rack sound I've owned was a tie between a Wood-outfitted Wingmaster and a Wood-equipped 500ATP. Wood resonates a lot more than the Synthetic does. At least I think that's what it is.

The spngiest, quietest rack I've heard is easily an 870 express.

FWIW (not much :) )

I can just imagine haveing my hand in the cookie jar and hearing that noise or the bolt throwen on a Auto 5 in the middle of the night.

I find these sorts of threads amusing.

The premise seems to be that the sound coming from a pump gun is unique, and different than the sound coming from other action types.

I'm confused by that. The Remington automatics are pretty much the same as the pump guns, except that it has a piston to open the bolt, and a spring to close it. The bolt, the magazine, the action bars, and the way it shucks the shell is the same. The piston that opens the action is located in the same place as the front stock of the pump gun, and operates the action in the same way.

Pretty much, an automatic is a pump gun that pumps it's self.

And because I know somebody is going to argue with this, I made a video demonstrating what a Remington automatic sounds like when you charge it from a full magazine.

listen to the sound in the vid and tell me what's different.

Your dog has a HUGE tail!

You're right. An 1100 or 11-87 is basically an 870 with a buffer spring and a gas piston. That's what struck me when I got one. It was mostly just like my 870.

Saw the movie "Overboard" today on Tv and noticed the guy shooting clays off the ship was using an O/U. The sounds effect engineer had the shucking sound every time before he would shoot that O/u. Kinda funny and stupid.
