Scope rings in opposite directions ??

I'm trying to create a larger than normal gap between scope rings on an AR rifle for a night vision scopes bulky electronics. Can I turn 2 piece cantilever (or any rings for that matter) in opposite directions without alignment issues? By opposite I mean the ring to base mounting screws would tighten from the left on one ring and the right on the other. I don't want to buy rings and find out it's a stupid idea after spending the money. Tell me I'm stupid while it's cheap!..LOL

Most of the time you can do so.

make sure they don't have any elevation built into them.

What he says. Avoid putting any of the scope bases off of the upper receiver and onto the handguard. Only bad things can result from doing so.
