I am a bit confused about scout scopes.

I am building a Czech mauser into a short and light mountain rifle for my wife. She has had trouble aquiring a sight picture in the past with "normal" scopes, mostly due to poor stock fit. While at a gunshow, I had her try the Ruger Gunsight rifle and she loved the forward mounted scope.

I have read some place that a pistol scope is all you need but I read somewhere else that there are porpouse built scout scopes.

Which is right?

I get a great deals on those gold banded scopes; what would yous guys suggest?

I am very happy with the Burris 2.75x Scout Scope on a Swede 6.5mm. The 1.5X Tasco pistol scope has a little too much eye relief for that application.

I use a Ruger GSR with a Leupold 2-5X EIR Scout Scope with the new Fire Dot reticle. This is not in the Leupold regular catalog, but you can find it at SWFA. It features a 30mm tube, and is a bit larger than the 2.5 EIR Scout model. I have used both on the same rifle, and prefer the variable version. I also suggest using the Leupold QDR low Weaver style rings; the return to zero is very close, and you have the option of easily going back to the factory iron sights in a hurry if you need to. BTW, this rifle will consistently put the first three shots in the same hole at 100 yards from the bench, with the next two very close, to give sub minute groups with 168 match bullets and H4895 powder.

scout scopes are intermediate eye relief scopes. regular scopes want the eyeball about 3-4 inches from the glass, intermediates run about 9-11 ish inches, and pistol scopes are made to have 20+ inches of eye relief. Determine where the scope will site on the gun, then determine how much relief you need.

now, some pistol scopes will work as intermediate scopes, some will not let the eye relief to adjust that far. I used a leupold m8 2x pistol scope with adjustable eye relief. I have heard the swift reliant pistol scope will work as well. Used pistol scopes generally run less than new intermediate scopes. I haven't had much luck with scout type scopes with more than 3 power. 2.5x was perfect.

A few years ago I bought a Millet variable with the German 1A recticle with the long eye relief feature. I mounted it on a Swiss K-31 and it is great.

Thanks guys, I plan on making a one piece base to fit the contour of the barrel to solder in place and use some low profile rings. The end of the scope should be somewhere over or just in front of the receiver ring.

Wait!! Before you go and do that, look at S&K Scout Mounts.

They have railed mounts that are applied in place of your rear leaf sight (should your rifle be ex-military). Before you do any other alterations, check them out. :)

Go with the Scout Scope...much better than a pistol scope. I have the Leupold, works awesome. Check for Burris' online as well, I have had great luck with them.
