SHTF happens and people start showing up at your house . . .

Tactics
You only get in if you're invited. You know who you are. I've told the rest to get ready on their own.

mb419 : 1000 rnds .223 (shameful, I know).

Just the ammo that you have in .223 Rem is WAY more than what some people have altogether without even counting or going into all the other ammo that you have stored. For most people, a thousand rounds is pretty good.

Some gun owners don't have more that a couple boxes of ammo on hand, if that.

So I'd say that you're doing pretty good.

I just took inventory or all my ammo, 8270 rds. most in 5 calibers (8mm, 7.62x54r, 7.5x55, 7.62x39 and 9mm) I have a goal of 5000 rds each for all common calibers (my jap, steyr, etc. don't need that much) I'm lacking in 7.5x55, .308, and 7.62x39, and .22lr (only 1900 rds.). It might seem like overkill now. But in a SHTF situation it would be handy to have a surplus. That and it makes range trips not an issue of finding ammo first.

20 rounds and a good flashlight.

If anything really happens, there will be plenty of guns laying around. Mostly you need a calm mind and a flashlight. 20 rounds and any old firearm will do it.
If you have something important enough that you will be SIEGED for it then I would set up a card table and sell it for IOUs.

If it's really important, shooting the first person in line will do the trick, I would think.

So....

If SHTF - bug in or bug out?

If, you had the choice and the situation for either was comparable - what would you chose?

Me - stay put. Why - cuz I've got all my stuff there - food, water, shelter, ammo, guns, ammo, guns, more ammo.

Shtf

I've pre-warned my friends to stock up. When I get invited over they haven't. I tell them again, they just glaze over. I have just four guns, a 12 ga with 1000 of 00 and slugs, a .223 with 10,000, a .45 with 5000 and I traded off my .22 [live in suburbs] for a .308 and I reload.
www.efoodsdirect.com and www.survivalmonkey.com for ways to make it. Did you know 100,000 people a day wake up to what's going on? At that rate, the govt will pull something else, to distract us. I know and I'm ready, too bad for the rest. If martial law is declared by this illegitimate administration, people will not be able to move around. HUNKER DOWN! ;)

Unless my house was becoming flooded, on fire, about to be hit by an ICBM and my family and I were somewhere else already or unless I was subject to human wave attacks from hordes of crazed looters that didn't respond to almost constant semi-auto gunfire in order to steal my wifes knick knacks off the fireplace mantle that she orders off E-Bay then I'm staying put.

Basically for the same reason, but my wife really likes this house.

If I didn't die trying to defend it, then my wife would make me wish I was dead anyway.

I'm officially joking, but there's an element of truth in there.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) I bought most of my ammo before I got married. Don't seem to have quite the same amount of money to spend on the important things anymore.

Cat is already out of the bag.

Even the most seemingly polite and civilized people can turn into very desperate and determined folk even in a temporary crisis. I would make it a point from here on not to discuss your "set up" with anyone except your close and most trusted family and friends.

The not so close and trusted family and friends must be weened off the idea of "coming over" in a crisis and into making their own preparations. In the event of a real crisis, short or long, be prepared in advance to make some rather quick tough decisions regarding any scoffing lazy freeloaders who failed to take their own sensible precautions and insist on a visit.

My friends know about my preperations, but they are mostly 300 miles away so it would be highly unlikely that they show up on my door step.

About to get an Ausie Cattle Dog, so now I need to expand my preperations to consider him.

Be safe, BSR

If preparedness comes up in conversation, I generally refer them to ready.gov.

I try to gently ease people into a preparedness for them and theirs without making myself look like a fanatic. If the government is reccomending you have some basic preps, it problably is not being fanatical.

Hopefully a lot of people will get the message and at least stockpile a months worth of food per person for a TSHTF event

If it is mentioned that they will come over to my place when all hell breaks loose, I tell them they get to stay only if they are carrying their own rations and remind them of katrina.

I am a preparer. I have enough food to carry my family for at least a year if need be.

Three weeks and five pages of a subject that isn't appropriate for S&T is long enough.

From the sticky at the top of this subforum:

It's not part of the mission of the forum to discuss outlandish and totally unrealistic scenarios. Threads that are based on end of the world scenarios will be closed or deleted. There are plenty of forums that people interested in that sort of thing can go to.

For example:

What gun and how much ammo do I need for a civil disturbance or the end of the world? Is not on topic and will be closed or deleted.
