Semi auto Submachine gun style pistols

Mostly, they appeal to people who intend to register them as short barreled rifles and add a stock. At least, that's my experience, though I do tend to get opinions of more serious shooters versus those who buy things "just because it's cool".

Maybe someone wants to feel super bad and conceal carry a look-a-like smg?

I know the Draco AK pistols are popular for turning in to SBRs.

Add a pistol grip and you have a AOW.

Semi Auto-looking

Just got a Bushmaster Carbon-15 7" pistol. Registered as a pistol, never a carbine. Very smooth, one-hand operation. Two-handed gives me 4" groups @ 50yds. I do wish there were an AR-type pistol in .308 or larger. Guess I'll have to build one.

Think about it, lots and lots of folks, both casual and serious shooters think MP5's are cool and would like to own one. Trouble is, 'most' would never spend the high tariff for the real thing. So a look-alike in .22LR that they can not only afford to buy ($299!), but can also afford to shoot appeals to a lot of people. Who cares if it's impractical.

For those who see shooting as part hobby such things make perfect sense. After all, it's not always about the best CCW option.

For example if there's club events that allow .22 action shooting then this MP5 copy along with a short or folding tactical stock and set up with a red dot would be aces for clanging steel in speed and accuracy competitions while giving at least a feel of the real thing.

.22 cal shorties have the look of the real deal without the SBR tax and cost less to shoot than a center fire. You're not winning any accuracy contests with a 5 pound one handed M-P 5 you're blasting for fun.

Some are popular with reenactors. A 'pistol' MP40 costs 1/3 or 1/4 what a real FA weapon would run and no additional licensing. Ditto for the PPSH-43 'pistol' recently spotted on the market.

Buy them if for no other reason then Pelosi, Fienstien, and Obama will be trying to take them away from you. Can't buy a Mac 10 semi-auto, or nearly any semi-auto in Kali now, and, we just elected one of the most anti-gun Attorney General's, Brown, to be Gov.:banghead:

sorry, but, cali is self inflicted...

AS to why, well since we can't have the real deal, we get close, I would love to get one of the .22 PPSH clones, pretty and cheap, now if I only could get the real thing, I mean here I had one in Iraq, for a little while before it went to the MP's, and it was very effective at demilling rounds. Sadly here in the land of the free we have to make happy with trigger bumping.

Where these fit is right where replica Winchester lever rifles and single action revolvers fit: As a shooting replica of a gun most of us can't afford as the real thing.

In the case of a semi-auto carbine or pistol version of a SMG, few of us live in states that allow owning a real full-auto, or we can't afford the many thousands of dollars to buy one and pay the tax.
In that case, a semi-auto carbine or pistol is an acceptable substitute for the real deal.
A .22 version allows cheaper shooting, since even in semi-auto one of these guns can run through an astounding amount of ammo in a short time.

In the gun hobbies, one question you should NEVER ask is "Why the heck do you want THAT thing for"?
The answer is "Because I WANT it, that's why".

No they are not. Kali asault weapons ban exempts rimfires.

That explains why I've scene a couple around. However, they are limited to a 10 round magazine, yes?

Saw a GSG MP5K .22 clone that was SBRed at a gunshow and have wanted one ever since. I'll get one eventually.

They are easy to shoot. It is, however, hard to hit targets unless they are quite large and close - like the broad side of a barn.
In have a semi-auto MAC-9, it rarely gets used.
